On March 5 through 8, 2007, the American Association of Law Libraries sponsored its first Management and Leadership Institute. Held in Tucson Arizona, the program was attended by 35 law librarians from throughout the United States. The Institute was envisioned and organized by Michael Chiorazzi, Associate Dean for Information Services, Professor of Law and Information Resources and Library Science at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law. In 2006, the Oak Lawn Park District began a multi-phase strategic planning process. They partnered with the University of Illinois' Office of Recreation and Park Resources to conduct a recreation and park needs assessment/evaluation study. Data for this study was collected from August through December, 2006. In addition to the final study report of findings, the Office of Recreation and Park Resources also conducted an analysis of demographic and recreation trends. Existing data collected by the U.S. Forest Service and the National Sporting Goods Association regarding recreation preferences, behaviors and trends was used in conjunction with the OakLawn Park District …

The Library Outpost, a satellite office of the campus’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, seeks ways to reach out to First Year students who are new to writing research papers. One of our goals is to meet the First Year students on their own turf. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose, California is a unique dual-use library serving the students of San Jose State University and the community of San Jose, California. The reference collections of the two libraries are merged and interfiled to promote ease of access for both populations served. Economies of scale were realized through collaborative collection development activities for major reference purchases between the two institutions. This article describes the planning and creation of the King Library's merged reference collection and reviews the literature of collaborative collection development and merged or interfiled collections.

In recent years, the administration, faculty and research professionals at the University of Illinois at Chicago have shown considerable interest in facilitating interdisciplinary research on campus. Beginning in 2006, the Office of the Provost and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research provided seed funding for the creation of several interdisciplinary research (IDR) centers on campus to encourage interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary scholarship and education. This study is a product of one of those centers – the UIC Interdisciplinary Center for Research on Violence. In 2005, India and the United States announced a nuclear “deal” that would seek to clarify India’s ambiguous status in the nuclear order. The sole superpower appeared to be recognizing India’s status as a nuclear-armed state by opening up the possibility of nuclear cooperation. This announcement represented the fruit of many years of careful Indian diplomacy aimed at establishing its identity as a responsible possessor of nuclear weapons and forging a closer alliance with the US. This article provides a concise description of the provisions of the 2005 India-US nuclear agreement, and analyzes its global, regional, and domestic implications. While …

Inflation worries the general public much more than it does the economics profession, and economists remain perplexed as to exactly why. The costs that concern economists are inflation’s deadweight loss. But that is only a part of the losses that concern the public, because inflation simultaneously transfers some of people’s income into the hands of government. The fact that the seigniorage tax may pay for programs they favor is a separate issue. Moreover, unlike income and other taxes, which people in democratic countries may think they have some control over through voting, seigniorage appears utterly arbitrary. In fact, people can …

Several studies identify collaboration between classroom teachers and teacher-librarians as a key factor that affects student achievement. Studies in teacher-librarianship have established procedures and processes for effective collaboration. This study examines collaboration from a broader theoretical and research perspective, beginning with 20 factors that specifically influence successful collaborations. These are clustered in six areas: factors related to the environment, to membership characteristics, to process and structure, to communication, to purpose, and to resources. Research from teacher-librarianship is then applied to substantiate and reinforce the factors and provide context for successful collaboration and thus effect on students' learning in schools. Agricultural trade policies, in particular import tariffs to protect domestic production, constitute a highly contested field of agricultural policy. In view of the recent focus on “evidence-based policy making†in the international development debate, the question arises as to which extent research-based evidence is used in such policy decisions, and which role research plays as compared to other political factors. Against this background, this paper seeks to examine and explain research-policy linkages in the case of rice tariff reform in Ghana. It is based on literature reviews and 70 interviews.
