Implementing An Embedded Information Literacy Program At The University Level: Best Practices, Ann Agee Sep 2007

Implementing An Embedded Information Literacy Program At The University Level: Best Practices, Ann Agee

Faculty and Staff Publications

Information literacy is the ability of individuals "to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information" (American Library Association, 1989, para. 3). At San Jose State University (SJSU), information literacy has been traditionally taught through one-shot, 50-minute lectures delivered by university librarians to students enrolled in a select few undergraduate courses. This method of instruction has proven to be neither sustainable nor effective. The lectures are not tailored by discipline and students might receive the same lecture several times while completing their lower-division coursework. SJSU wants to replace this format …

A Consumer Logistics Framework For Understanding Preferences For High-Speed Rail Transportation, Mti Report 05-04, Kenneth C. Gehrt, Mahesh Rajan

Mineta Transportation Institute Publications

The prospect for high-speed rail (HSR) service for the San Francisco-Los Angeles corridor and beyond first arose eight years ago. The plan remains to connect California’s major cities in the next 15 years at a total cost of $25 billion.

The purpose of this study is to reach a fuller understanding of consumers’ perceptions of such a service. Consumer logistics theory is used in the study as a framework to begin to provide this understanding of consumer perceptions and to inform future efforts to develop and market HSR service.

This study uses the consumer logistics framework to help understand how …

Understanding The Effectiveness Of Product Placement: The Roles Of Placement Congruency And Information Processing, Kavita Jayaraman, Jing Zhang Aug 2007

Understanding The Effectiveness Of Product Placement: The Roles Of Placement Congruency And Information Processing, Kavita Jayaraman, Jing Zhang

Faculty Publications

This project examined the influence of placement congruency and information processing on the effectiveness of product placement in a TV sitcom. In an experiment, we found that compared to an incongruently placed product, a congruently placed product elicited lower level of product recall, but more favorable product attitudes among respondents. Moreover, this attitudinal effect was more pronounced when the respondents engaged in incidental (vs. deliberate) information processing when they watched the TV program.

Filipinas And Filipinos Evading States, Remaking The Politics Of Diaspora: Conceptualizing A Sociology Of Mass Removals, Peter Chua, Valerie Francisco

Faculty Publications, Sociology

The Philippine’s' ongoing labor export policy since the early 1970s has resulted in one of the largest national outflow of skilled labor and service workers and in the proliferation of gendered Filipino diasporic and migrant communities around the world. Poverty and very few economic opportunities in the Philippines explain a significant portion of this outflow. The labor export policy thus creates a structural opening for many to seek livelihood outside the Philippines. The government fosters this policy so that temporary migrant workers and immigrants settlers send remittances back to the Philippines, bolstering the national economy. Since the 1980s, Filipino migration …

Mineta Transportation Institute Publications

In this study, the authors applied principles of social learning and marketing to develop a transit training video for residents of the Rossmoor senior adult community in California . The video features familiar community members successfully navigating specific concerns and problems related to transit use in accessing key community destinations (shopping, health care, and the nearest Bay Area Rapid Transit district station). To evaluate the effectiveness of the video, residents were recruited to complete questionnaires before and after viewing it. Video messages aimed to educate viewers on how to obtain transit information, costs, and payment generated a significant and positive …

Who Moved My Desk? The Future Reference Platforms, Anamika Dasgupta, Steven Ovadia

Faculty and Staff Publications

New communication platforms such as Wikis, Bots, MySpace, Webex, Podcasts, Text-to-speech programs and community-based reference sites offer a means to share information in different formats, supporting specific learning styles, and instruction environments. The effectiveness of these communication platforms in providing reference services depends on many factors: the nature of information being shared, the attitudes of the information seeker and sharer, and the environment and context in which the information is being shared. This presentation will include an introduction and overview of these communication platforms.

Mineta Transportation Institute Publications

The Mineta Transportation Institute brought together experts in surface transportation and students from middle and high schools to discuss sustainable transportation topics on April 1, 2008. The goal was to introduce the students to transportation-related careers and to inspire them to pursue the academic curricula that would lead to success in those careers. Self-Archiving And The Copyright Transfer Agreements Of Isi-Ranked Library And Information Science Journals, Anita Coleman

Faculty Publications

A study of Thomson-Scientific ISI ranked Library and Information Science (LIS) journals (n = 52) is reported. The study examined the stances of publishers as expressed in the Copyright Transfer Agreements (CTAs) of the journals toward self-archiving, the practice of depositing digital copies of one's works in an Open Archives Initiative (OAI)-compliant open access repository. Sixty-two percent (32) do not make their CTAs available on the open Web; 38% (20) do. Of the 38% that do make CTAs available, two are open access journals. Of the 62% that do not have a publicly available CTA, 40% are silent about self-archiving. …
