Computer Skills, Gender, And Technostress In Higher Education, Sonya Shepherd Dec 2005

Computer Skills, Gender, And Technostress In Higher Education, Sonya Shepherd

Sonya S. Gaither

The creation of computer software and hardware, telecommunications, databases, and the Internet has affected society as a whole, and particularly higher education by giving people new productivity options and changing the way they work (Hulbert, 1998). In the so-called “information age” the increasing use of technology has become the driving force in the way people work, learn, and play (Drake, 2000). As this force evolves, the people using technology change also (Nelson, 1990). Adapting to technology is not simple. Some people tend to embrace change while others resist change (Wolski & Jackson, 1999). Before making a decision on whether to …

Palestinian Refugees: Dethroning The Nation At The Crowing Of The 'Statelet', Randa Farah Dec 2005

Palestinian Refugees: Dethroning The Nation At The Crowing Of The 'Statelet', Randa Farah

Randa R Farah Dr.

The Oslo agreements proposed a two-state solution for the Palestinian-Israeli conflict: a Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza existing alongside Israel. However, the refugees’ right of return and claims to land and property expropriated by Israel during the 1948 were removed from the equation, although they represent the core issues in the conflict. Based on the territorial divisions that preceded the 1967 war, or the ‘green line’, the agreements implicitly rendered the 1948 war and its consequences for the majority of the Palestinian population a non-negotiable historical reality. In a manner of speaking, the crowning of the ‘state’ …

Guide To The Julia Morgan Papers, 1835 – 1958, Nancy Loe, Denise Fourie Dec 2005

Guide To The Julia Morgan Papers, 1835 – 1958, Nancy Loe, Denise Fourie

Nancy E. Loe

This collection contains architectural drawings and plans, office records, photographs, correspondence, project files, student work, family correspondence, and personal papers from the estate of California architect Julia Morgan, who practiced in San Francisco during the first half of the twentieth century. The bulk of the collection extends from 1896, when Morgan left for Paris to study architecture at the Beaux-Arts, to 1945 when her practice began to wind down. A persistent misperception exists that she destroyed records from her fifty-year practice when she retired in 1951. In fact, she carefully preserved many original architectural drawings and other business records, which …

Markov Chain Analyses Of Communication Processes In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith, Laurie Weingart Dec 2005

Markov Chain Analyses Of Communication Processes In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith, Laurie Weingart

Mara Olekalns

Markov chain analysis provides a way to investigate how the communication processes in dyadic negotiations are affected by features of the negotiating context and how, in turn, differences in communication processes among dyads affect the quality of the final settlement. In Markov models, the communication process is represented as a sequence of transitions between states, which describes how tactics are used and how they are reciprocated during the course of a negotiation. This article provides an introduction to Markov chain analysis and shows, using simulated data, how Markov chain models may be analyzed using widely-available loglinear modeling software. Model selection, …

Lessons Of Disaster: Policy Change After Catastrophic Events, Thomas Birkland Dec 2005

Lessons Of Disaster: Policy Change After Catastrophic Events, Thomas Birkland

Thomas A Birkland

Even before the wreckage of a disaster is cleared, one question is foremost in the minds of the public: "What can be done to prevent this from happening again?" Today, news media and policymakers often invoke the "lessons of September 11" and the "lessons of Hurricane Katrina." Certainly, these unexpected events heightened awareness about problems that might have contributed to or worsened the disasters, particularly about gaps in preparation. Inquiries and investigations are made that claim that "lessons" were "learned" from a disaster, leading us to assume that we will be more ready the next time a similar threat looms, …

Integrating Indigenous Cultural Traditions In The Management Of Protected Marine Resources – The Fiordland Example, James Mize Dec 2005

Integrating Indigenous Cultural Traditions In The Management Of Protected Marine Resources – The Fiordland Example, James Mize

James Mize

Indigenous communities that rely upon natural resources for their cultural practices and livelihood depend on the health of the ecosystem for traditional practices to continue. Yet government efforts to protect ecosystem integrity by “locking up” resources in spatially-explicit management regimes that prohibit resource use risks the disruption of indigenous cultural traditions compatible with sustainability. This tension can be seen in the Te Wāhipounamu / South West New Zealand (Fiordland) area, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, subject to increasing pressure from visitors and other non-traditional use. New Zealand statutes governing the management of adjacent marine resources recognize and incorporate Māori …

The author hopes that a glance behind the scenes in this arena of language and social interaction scholarship calls attention to the interactive nature of editorial processes. The author adds that the most evident level on which any scholarly journal is part of an interaction is that the journal's readers are the …
