Monstrous Youth In Suburbia: Disruption And Recovery Of The American Dream, Kristen Hoerl
Monstrous Youth In Suburbia: Disruption And Recovery Of The American Dream, Kristen Hoerl
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Although the American Dream myth idealizes youth who grow up in suburbia as culture types of imminent success, the Columbine High School shootings demonstrated that all not suburban youth will grow up to succeed. The extensive news media coverage of the tragedy reflects broader anxieties about the declining status of the suburbs in American society. In the wake of the shootings, the news media created a myth of monstrous youth in suburbia that functioned to repair suburbanites’ waning faith in the myth of the American Dream.

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews
Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series
The Commonwealth’s economy appears to have bottomed out and may already have started to expand. The Massachusetts Leading Economic Index for February forecasts that real gross state product will grow at an annualized rate of 1.8 percent through August. This is the fourth consecutive positive reading. Furthermore, the current economic index has remained steady for three months in a row.

A Tale Of Two Decades: Changes In Work And Earnings In Massachusetts, 1979–1999, Randy Albelda, Marlene Kim
Economics Faculty Publication Series
Over the past twenty years, Massachusetts has replaced the mantle of old-style manufacturing with a robust “new economy.” Our economic vitality has never been better. But not all individuals benefited from the 1990s boom as they had from the one a decade earlier. Some of our residents are worse off than they were before.
Assessment Of Land Use/Land Cover Change Impact On Water Quality In The Davis Creek Watershed, Southwestern Michigan, Porntip Limlahapun
Assessment Of Land Use/Land Cover Change Impact On Water Quality In The Davis Creek Watershed, Southwestern Michigan, Porntip Limlahapun
Masters Theses
This study uses Arc View Nonpoint Source Modeling (A VNPSM), an interface between Agricultural Nonpoint Source Pollution Model and ArcView GIS to assess the impact of land use/land cover change between 1978 and 1996 on water quality in the Davis Creek watershed, southwestern Michigan. The distribution of land use/land cover changes is identified by geographic analysis. Compared to 1978, agricultural land decreased by more than 60 percent while residential land increased by over 170 percent in the watershed in 1996. The hydrologic impact of the urbanization is evaluated by the AGNPS model. AVNPSM is used to derive required input parameters …
Learning In The Prairie, Meredith L. Beilfuss
Learning In The Prairie, Meredith L. Beilfuss
Masters Theses
This research focused on fieldwork in geography and science education relative to the high school curriculum. First, the literature was reviewed to analyze the pedagogical and cognitive benefits of using fieldwork and how fieldwork might enrich the high school social studies and science curriculum in Michigan. Second, prairie curriculum resources were evaluated for suitability using the Michigan Education Standards and the National Standards for Geography. Finally, two groups of high school students engaged in fieldwork, using two different methods, photography and sketching, and were compared for their pre and post fieldwork knowledge of prairie ecological concepts. The pre and post …

An Analysis Of Intermodal Transport Carrier Selection Criteria For Pacific-Rim Imports To New England, Shashi N. Kumar, Vijay Rajan
An Analysis Of Intermodal Transport Carrier Selection Criteria For Pacific-Rim Imports To New England, Shashi N. Kumar, Vijay Rajan
Journal of Transportation Management
The introduction of double stack rail services opened up a variety of transportation options for shippers located in the North Eastern parts of the U.S. The availability of transcontinental double stack service from the Canadian West Coast has increased this option even further particularly because of a recent new service introduced by a small U.S. railroad company. The paper uses Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology to provide a decision-making framework for the intermodal choices of shippers located in the region suitable for duplication elsewhere where similar options exist.
The Case For U.S. High Speed Rail, Drew Stapleton, Melissa Cooley, Darlene Goehner, Daoud Jandal
The Case For U.S. High Speed Rail, Drew Stapleton, Melissa Cooley, Darlene Goehner, Daoud Jandal
Journal of Transportation Management
High-speed rail is a form of self-guided ground transportation, which utilizes steel-wheels or magnetic levitation (i.e., Maglev) and can travel in excess of 200 miles per hour. High-speed ground transportation (i.e., HSGT) has been widely used in Europe and Asia, but the debate continues over the usefulness of high-speed rail in the United States. Several metropolitan areas in the United States have been identified as corridors that would benefit from HSGT. High speed rail can offer an alternative or a compliment to over-the-road and air transportation. Initial investment cost for this mode of transportation are high, but other factors such …

An Examination Of The Impacts Of Transportation Management Systems, Stephen M. Rutner, Brian J. Gibson
Journal of Transportation Management
There is a great deal of research regarding Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Logistics Information Systems (LIS). However, there has not been a recent examination of the current state ofTransportation Management Systems (TMS). This article provides an overview of the previous research and examines the current state of TMS and the relationships between these systems and other information systems in general. The results of over twenty years of LIS and TMS data are presented to highlight potential information gaps and significant relationships between TMS and other functions.

Undergraduate Programs In Information Science: A Survey Of Requirements And Goals, Colin Koteles, Caroline Haythornthwaite
Undergraduate Programs In Information Science: A Survey Of Requirements And Goals, Colin Koteles, Caroline Haythornthwaite
Library Scholarship
Numerous new undergraduate programs have appeared in the past few years that focus on theories and practices of information science and information technology. As the global reliance on networked, digital information continues to grow, we can expect such programs to be enduring and common features of college and university undergraduate curricula. As educators and administrators consider establishing their own information studies (IS) programs, many are asking what is an IS program, and how do your create one? We surveyed online information related to existing undergraduate IS programs in the United States and Canada. Using quantitative and qualitative data about these …

Correction For Unreliability Of Multifactor Measures: Comparison Of Alpha And Parallel Forms Approaches, William M. Rogers, Neal Schmitt, Morell E. Mullins
Correction For Unreliability Of Multifactor Measures: Comparison Of Alpha And Parallel Forms Approaches, William M. Rogers, Neal Schmitt, Morell E. Mullins
Peer Reviewed Articles
Coefficient alpha is a widely used and useful index of reliability, but it provides an inappropriate estimate of reliability when used with multidimensional composites. The problematic nature of this inappropriate usage varies primarily as a function of the prominence of distinct factors in a composite and to a lesser extent as a function of the length of the measure. Implications for use of coefficient alpha estimates of reliability as the basis for correcting observed correlations for unreliability are described for a variety of levels of multidimensionality and measure length. Researchers should correct for unreliability to estimate construct interrelationships but must …
