Consider testing for independence against stochastic order in an ordered 2xJ contingency table, under product multinomial sampling. In applications one may wish to exploit prior information concerning the direction of the treatment effect, yet ultimately end up with a testing procedure with good frequentist properties. As such, a reasonable objective may be to simultaneously maximize power at a specified alternative and ensure reasonable power for all other alternatives of interest. Participants in epidemiologic studies may not represent statistically independent observations. We consider modifications to conventional analyses of 2×2 tables, including Fisher’s exact test and confidence intervals, to account for correlated observations in this setting. An example is provided, assessing the robustness of conclusions from a published analysis.

Simulation Study Of Chemical Inhibition Modeling, Pali Sen, Mary Anderson

The combined effects of the activities of different chemicals are of interest of this study. We simulate for the synthetic data, and fit experimental data for three models and estimate the parameters. We assess the fit of the synthetic data and the experimental data by comparing the coefficients of variation for the parameter estimates and identify the best model for the inhibition process.

On Distribution Function Estimation Using Double Ranked Set Samples With Application, Walid A. Abu-Dayyeh, Hani M. Samawi, Lara A. Bani-Hani

As a variation of ranked set sampling (RSS); double ranked set sampling (DRSS) was introduced by Al-Saleh and Al-Kadiri (2000), and it has been used only for estimating the mean of the population. In this paper DRSS will be used for estimating the distribution function (cdf). The efficiency of the proposed estimators will be obtained when ranking is perfect. Some inference on the distribution function will be drawn based on Kolomgrov-Smirnov statistic. It will be shown that using DRSS will increase the efficiency in this case.

On The Estimation Of Binomial Success Probability With Zero Occurrence In Sample, Mehdi Razzaghi

The problem of estimating the probability of a rare event when the sample shows no incidence of the event is considered. Several methodologies based on various statistical techniques are described and their relative performances are investigated. A decision theoretic approach for estimation of response probability when the sample contains zero responses is examined in depth. The properties of each method are discussed and an example from teratology is used to provide illustration and to demonstrate the results.

The first part of this paper discusses a five-year systematic review of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology following the landmark power study conducted by Sawilowsky and Hillman (1992). The second part discusses a five-year longitudinal follow-up of a radically nonnormal population distribution: discrete mass at zero with gap. This distribution was based upon a real dataset.

Jmasm4: Critical Values For Four Nonparametric And/Or Distribution-Free Tests Of Location For Two Independent Samples, Bruce R. Fay

Researchers engaged in computer-intensive studies may need exact critical values, especially for sample sizes and alpha levels not normally found in published tables, as well as the ability to control ‘best-fit’ criteria. They may also benefit from the ability to directly generate these values rather than having to create lookup tables. Fortran 90 programs generate ‘best-conservative’ (bc) and ‘best-fit’ (bf) critical values with associated probabilities for the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test of general differences (bc), Rosenbaum’s test of location (bc), Tukey’s quick test (bc and bf)) and the Wilcoxon rank-sum test (bc).

Electronic technology is one of the significant forces underpinning the growth on nonprofit scholarship. The 2000 United States presidential election was one of the closest in history, and issues of importance to older Americans such as Social Security, prescription drugs, and taxes were front and center in the national debate. This article examines how AARP, formerly the American Association of Retired Persons, portrayed the candidates and issues through its two publications: AARP Bulletin and Modern Maturity.

The purpose of this study was fourfold: (a) to empirically evaluate the correlation between perceived psychosocial stressors (expressed concerns), immature defense styles, dysfunctional personality patterns, clinical syndromes, and maladaptive behaviors, as measured by the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI), Defense Style Questionnaire-40 (DSQ-40), and Youth Outcome Questionnaire-2.0 (YOQ); (b) to look at how wilderness therapy affects the expressed concerns, immature defense styles, clinical syndromes, dysfunctional personality patterns, and maladaptive behaviors of troubled adolescents; (c) to see if subjects whose post-test defense styles change improve more than subjects whose defense styles remain the same or get worse; and (d) to begin …

The emotional investment required to construct a caring doctor-patient relationship can be justified on humane grounds. Can it also be justified as a direct physiologic intervention? Two lines of evidence point in this direction. People in an empathic relationship exhibit a correlation of indicators of autonomic activity. This occurs between speakers and responsive listeners, members of a coherent group, and bonded pairs of higher social animals. Furthermore, the experience of feeling cared about in a relationship reduces the secretion of stress hormones and shifts the neuroendocrine system toward homeostasis. Peer Reviewed Articles

The authors investigated preference, perceived danger, and fear for a sample of 70 field/forest settings. Predictor variables included perception-based variables (visual access, penetration,movement ease), information-based variables (mystery, concealment, refuge), and variables thought to intervene between concealment and danger (entrapment, rearview concern). All variables were rated by independent groups. Danger and fear were strongly positively correlated for these settings, but preference and danger had a more modest negative correlation. Factor analysis of the strongly inter-correlated predictor variables yielded two factors, interpreted as Visibility and Locomotor Access. Both factors were positive predictors of preference and negative predictors of danger. Further analyses suggested …

This paper looks at a recent historical moment in which the American national identity was defined and contested in the public arena. The Persian Gulf crisis of 1990-91 presents a case in point in which official actors attempted to define the American character and in doing so prescribed particular actions necessary to fulfill what it means to be an American. President George Bush’s discourse used the crisis to rejuvenate US prestige and American confidence. He described Americans as unique in esteemed values and America as the only country capable of leading the world. In so doing, he invited American participation …

Shortly after deploying the first-ever landmine impact survey team to the field in Yemen during July 1999, Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (VVAF) was asked by the European Union and the U.S. State Department’s Office for Global Humanitarian Demining Programs to make a critical contribution to the international response in the province of Kosovo in the former Republic of Yugoslavia. The mission: to classify affected communities in Kosovo by the severity of socio-economic impacts caused by landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) and develop a system for prioritizing the tasks that the United Nations Mine Action Coordination Center (UNMACC) managed. This project was designed to shed light on the widening gap between white and minority pension coverage during recent years. The hypothesis under investigation is that the divergence in white/minority coverage may be due in part to differences in the rates at which white and minority workers are choosing to participate in voluntary salary reduction plans. The availability of such plans has increased explosively in the past decade or so.
