Context Effects And Lexical Ambiguity Processing: An Activation-Based Account, Frazier Orgain May 2002

Context Effects And Lexical Ambiguity Processing: An Activation-Based Account, Frazier Orgain

Master's Theses

Many studies have been conducted to test the effects of ambiguous words in sentence processing. There are two views: the modularity hypothesis and the interactive hypothesis that dominate this field of study. The effect of ambiguity has been tested in many ways, including gating, cross-modal priming, naming, and self-paced reading. This utilizes the methods of self paced reading with lexical decision and naming tasks to examine the hypotheses as they relate to the access period of lexical differentiation. Results indicate that context has an immediate effect, after which participants look to other factors to discern meaning of a sentence. Details …

Department Of Technical Services, Review Of Goals And Priorities (2002), William T. O'Malley

Technical Services Reports and Statistics

In the Spring 2002, the Units of the Department of Technical Services conducted a review of mission, goals, objectives, priorities and workload. The Units consulted previous relevant reviews, looked at current workflow, identified present staff vacancies, and prognosticated as best we could on future trends. All staff fully participated in the discussions at unit-wide meetings, and at a full departmental meeting, where a number of drafts were developed, revised and subsequently approved. The Department will use this document as a constant reminder of where we should concentrate our limited resources as we serve the Library and the University community. Goals …

Research Treatments For Self Injurious Behavior With Unclear Or Automatically Reinforced Causes And Their Correlation To Least Restrictive Behavioral Interventions, Valarie Blamires May 2002

Research Treatments For Self Injurious Behavior With Unclear Or Automatically Reinforced Causes And Their Correlation To Least Restrictive Behavioral Interventions, Valarie Blamires

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Self injurious behavior (SIB) is one of the most perplexing and frightening behaviors exhibited by some students. SIB is defined as behavior wherein the individual is engaging in repetitive or stereotypical behaviors that may and in some cases does result in physical harm to the individual (Jacob-Timm, 1996). The behaviors are displayed in a variety of topographies. They can range from fingernail picking to head banging, and can be so destructive that the student can cause severe injury to themselves or even death. Individuals who display this type of behavior also display a variety of medical and clinical diagnosis which …

The Florida Community College Statewide Collection Assessment Project: Outcomes And Impact, Anna H. Perrault, Tina Adams, Rhonda Smith, Jeannie Dixon

School of Information Faculty Publications

A collection assessment project was conducted in 1998 of the twenty-eight community college library/Library Resource Center (LRC) collections in Florida.1 The evaluative materials provided to each of the institutions produced a number of outcomes. To assess the project’s impact, a survey was conducted in fall 2000. The impact study found that, in the opinion of library administrators, the Florida Community College Collection Assessment study had influenced the appropriation of additional funds, informed librarians’ collection development decisions, and affected the weeding of collections through the presentation of institution-specific collection assessment reports that were provided for each library. The major finding of …

Shifting Goals And Mounting Challenges For Statistical Methodology, Pranab K. Sen May 2002

Shifting Goals And Mounting Challenges For Statistical Methodology, Pranab K. Sen

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Modern interdisciplinary research in statistical science encompasses a wide field: agriculture, biology, biomedical sciences along with bioinformatics, clinical sciences, education, environmental and public health disciplines, genomic science, industry, molecular genetics, socio-behavior, socio-economics, toxicology, and a variety of other disciplines. Statistical science has historically had mathematical perspectives dominating theoretical and methodological developments. Yet, the advent of modern information technology has opened the doors for highly computation intensive statistical tools (i.e., software), wherein mathematical aspects are often de-emphasized. Knowledge discovery and data mining (KDDM) is now becoming a dominating force, with bioinformatics as a notable example. In view of this apparent discordance …

The Q-Sort Method: Assessing Reliability And Construct Validity Of Questionnaire Items At A Pre-Testing Stage, Abraham Y. Nahm, S. Subba Rao, Luis E. Solis-Galvan, T. S. Ragu-Nathan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This paper describes the Q-sort, which is a method of assessing reliability and construct validity of questionnaire items at a pre-testing stage. The method uses Cohen's Kappa and Moore and Benbasat's Hit Ratio in assessing the questionnaire.

Using The T Test With Uncommon Sample Sizes, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky, Barry S. Markman May 2002

Using The T Test With Uncommon Sample Sizes, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky, Barry S. Markman

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Monte Carlo techniques were used to determine the effect of using common critical values as an approximation for uncommon sample sizes. Results indicate there can be a significant loss in statistical power. Therefore, even though many instructors now rely on computer statistics packages, the recommendation is made to provide more specificity (i.e., values between 30 and 60) in tables of critical values published in textbooks.

Modeling Strategies In Logistic Regression With Sas, Spss, Systat, Bmdp, Minitab, And Stata, Chao-Ying Joanne Peng, Tak-Shing Harry So May 2002

Modeling Strategies In Logistic Regression With Sas, Spss, Systat, Bmdp, Minitab, And Stata, Chao-Ying Joanne Peng, Tak-Shing Harry So

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This paper addresses modeling strategies in logistic regression within the context of a real-world data set. Six commercially available statistical packages were evaluated in how they addressed modeling issues and in the accuracy of their regression results. Recommendations are offered for data analysts in terms of each package's strengths and weaknesses.

Rank-Based Procedures For Mixed Paired And Two-Sample Designs, Suzanne R. Dubnicka, R. Clifford Blair, Thomas P. Hettmansperger May 2002

Rank-Based Procedures For Mixed Paired And Two-Sample Designs, Suzanne R. Dubnicka, R. Clifford Blair, Thomas P. Hettmansperger

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This paper presents a rank-based procedure for parameter estimation and hypothesis testing when the data are a mixture of paired observations and independent samples. Such a situation may arise when comparing two treatments. When both treatments can be applied to a subject, paired data will be generated. When it is not possible to apply both treatments, the subject will be randomly assigned to one of the treatment groups. Our rank-based procedure allows us to use the data from the paired sample and the independent samples to make inferences about the difference in the mean responses. The rank-based procedure uses both …

Longitudinal Analysis Of Behavior Patterns In A Captive Chimpanzee Population, Amy Augusta Tirone May 2002

Longitudinal Analysis Of Behavior Patterns In A Captive Chimpanzee Population, Amy Augusta Tirone

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Data collected over an 11 year period were analyzed for behavioral constancy, reaction to environmental change, and the differential influence of environment and genetics in a group of captive chimpanzees using the framework of the Five Factor Model of Personality. Results suggested environment was a more influential factor in behavioral production, although expected reactions of specific individuals were not evidenced. Improvements upon this research include use of a more chimpanzee-specific personality model and more detailed data collection to support more precise conclusions regarding behavioral etiology.
