Strategic Environmental Policy And International Trade In Asymmetric Oligopoly Markets, Yann Duval, Stephen F. Hamilton May 2002

Strategic Environmental Policy And International Trade In Asymmetric Oligopoly Markets, Yann Duval, Stephen F. Hamilton

Economics

This paper examines optimal cooperative and non-cooperative environmental taxes for the case in which a polluting input is used to produce an internationally-traded finished product. The model allows for terms-of-trade effects under oligopoly and employs a general specification of the environmental damage function that encompasses special cases of local, global, and transboundary externalities. The model has several implications for public finance. For example, inefficiently high environmental taxes may be optimal for a net exporting country in non-cooperative circumstances, as the motive to shift rent by selecting an inefficiently low tax rate is countervailed by the incentive to shift the burden …

The Use Of Play Assessment To Evaluate The Cognitive Skills Of Two-And Three-Year-Old Children, Lisa Kelly-Vance, Bridget O. Ryalls, Katrina Gill Glover May 2002

The Use Of Play Assessment To Evaluate The Cognitive Skills Of Two-And Three-Year-Old Children, Lisa Kelly-Vance, Bridget O. Ryalls, Katrina Gill Glover

Psychology Faculty Publications

Play assessment is increasing in popularity despite the lack of empirical support. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of play assessment with young children and determine its efficacy in determining cognitive levels of development. Eight 2-year-olds and eight 3 1/2-year-olds were observed playing in an unstructured format. Results indicated that Exploratory Play becomes more complex with age and is displayed more than Pretend Play in an unstructured play session. Children's play primarily consisted of Exploratory Play, Pretend Play and Problem Solving and Planning Skills. Several of the Supple mental Subdomains measured by play assessment were not …

A Journey Into The Future: Imagining A Nonviolent World, Elise Boulding May 2002

A Journey Into The Future: Imagining A Nonviolent World, Elise Boulding

Peace and Conflict Studies

The inspiration for this essay came to me after a daylong workshop on Imagining a Nonviolent World which I offered for prisoners at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Norfolk on a wintry Saturday morning. This type of imaging workshop first evolved in the late 1970s, as I began to realize that we peace activists, working to bring about a nonviolent world without war, really had no idea how a world in which armies had disappeared would function. How could we work to bring about something we could not even see in our imaginations? Stepping back into the 1950s in my …

Distributive Justice And Punishment In Team Sports, David Bucur May 2002

Distributive Justice And Punishment In Team Sports, David Bucur

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Distributive justice outcomes of punishment in an intercollegiate team sport setting were investigated. Male intercollegiate athletes (#=148) participating in the NAIA National Soccer Championship Tournament responded to one of eight scenarios and reported perceived fairness to player, fairness to teammates, deterrence to future player misconduct, and deterrence to future teammate misconduct. The results indicated that athletes perceive consistent distribution of punishment as more fair than conditional distribution of punishment; consistently distributed punishment is perceived to be more likely to deter future misconduct than conditional punishment; punishment, in general, is perceived as more fair when the violation committed is severe as …

The Incorporation Of Emergent Literacy Into Head Start Classrooms, Emily Seeger May 2002

The Incorporation Of Emergent Literacy Into Head Start Classrooms, Emily Seeger

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Emergent literacy may be described as the process of learning about the environment that leads to the development of meaning and concepts, including concepts about the functions of reading and writing. Research supports certain practices that promote emergent literacy in young children, and federal legislation outlines requirements for Head Start programs with regard to specific activities that should be promoted to enhance children's emergent literacy skills. This study asked teachers from 318 Head Start programs in the Southeast United States to complete a survey that asked specific questions targeting the emergent literacy practices used in classrooms, as well as familiarity …

The Effect Of Cognitive Load On Illusory Correlation, Jason Simpson May 2002

The Effect Of Cognitive Load On Illusory Correlation, Jason Simpson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study investigated two theories of illusory correlation in social judgment by examining how varying the level of cognitive load during encoding of social stimuli affected the amount of illusory correlation. If the level of illusory correlation increases in a monotonic relationship with increasing cognitive load, then this type of increase would provide evidence for the distinctiveness-based view of illusory correlation (Hamilton & GifFord, 1976); however, if levels of illusory correlation show a curvilinear relationship, this relationship would provide support for the differentiated meaning view (Haslam, McGarty, & Brown, 1996). Cognitive load was manipulated by having participants perform an auditory …

Faking Integrity Tests: More Than A Mindset?, Christopher Corthern May 2002

Faking Integrity Tests: More Than A Mindset?, Christopher Corthern

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Personnel selection procedures often include integrity tests to aid in the attempt to hire the best possible candidates for a given job. Meta-analyses of integrity test validity coefficients have found evidence of incremental validity in the prediction of many performance criteria, but questions remain regarding the nature of the construct they actually measure. The classical interpretation of higher integrity scores being linked with higher job performance is that honest people are more productive. This study surveys another possibility: those that score highly on these measures may possess higher degrees of a problem solving ability related to intelligence that allows them …

The Role Of Faith In Cross-Cultural Conflict Resolution, Abdul Aziz Said, Nathan C. Funk May 2002

The Role Of Faith In Cross-Cultural Conflict Resolution, Abdul Aziz Said, Nathan C. Funk

Peace and Conflict Studies

Excerpt

When we speak of the role of faith in cross-cultural conflict resolution, our challenge is to honor the diversity of the world’s humanistic and spiritual traditions while seeking common ground among them. What we aspire towards, in other words, is an agenda for research, dialogue and activism that is global in conception and responsive to common challenges of peacemaking and coexistence within and among the world’s many traditions. It is no longer sufficient for transnational peace agendas to be defined primarily by the cultural experiences and perceived security threats of a particular nation or culture. We need new frameworks …

Beyond Resolution: What Does Conflict Transformation Actually Transform?, Christopher Mitchell May 2002

Beyond Resolution: What Does Conflict Transformation Actually Transform?, Christopher Mitchell

Peace and Conflict Studies

The paper considers the concept of ‘conflict transformation’ in relation to earlier ideas concerning the ‘resolution’ of conflict and seeks to differentiate between the two approaches. Writers and writings from the conflict transformation ‘school’ are surveyed and an effort is made to delineate the core characteristics of the approach, viewed either as a process or an end state. Questions are raised about transformation on a personal, group or conflict system level, all of which seem to be encompassed by various adherents of the transformation school, and the unifying concept that emerges is that of the relationship between adversaries being transformed …

Model Managed Care Contract For Health Professionals And Clinical Providers Of Mental Illness And Addiction Disorder Treatment And Prevention Services, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Joel B. Teitelbaum, Brian Kamoie, D. Richard Mauery May 2002

Model Managed Care Contract For Health Professionals And Clinical Providers Of Mental Illness And Addiction Disorder Treatment And Prevention Services, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Joel B. Teitelbaum, Brian Kamoie, D. Richard Mauery

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

The contracting process is one that health care professionals oftentimes find complex and confusing. Furthermore, studies of managed care service contracts between managed care organizations and health professionals who furnish mental illness and addiction disorder prevention and treatment services have found that these contracts often heavily favor the managed care organization by allowing the MCO broad latitude over a network professional's service responsibilities, the rate of payment for covered benefits and extensive discretion over treatment decision-making.

As an aid to its members, the American Medical Association (AMA) has drafted a "model" provider agreement that gives physicians in both individual and …

Brain Injury In Children: Assessment And School-Based Interventions, Deanne Smith May 2002

Brain Injury In Children: Assessment And School-Based Interventions, Deanne Smith

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A traumatic brain injury is an acquired injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, resulting in total or partial functional disability or psychosocial impairment that adversely affects a child's educational performance. It is considered the leading cause of mortality and disability among children with estimates of over one million occurrences each year. The 1990 revision of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act included Traumatic Brain Injury as a special education diagnostic category. Although this allowed students greater access to appropriate services, it pointed out the need for additional knowledge and training for educators working with this population. …

Auditory Stimulation And Its Effect On Spatial Temporal Ability, Cynthia G. Edwards May 2002

Auditory Stimulation And Its Effect On Spatial Temporal Ability, Cynthia G. Edwards

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This thesis was designed to detect the type of spatial ability most effected by auditory stimulation, as described in the Mozart effect. Previous research has shown enhancement of performance on the paper-folding and cutting subtest of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale IV with failures to replicate in research using other measures. Seventy-five college students enrolled in introductory psychology classes were exposed to one of three types of auditory stimulation, followed by two measures of spatial ability. The Purdue Visualization of Developments test correlates with tests of spatial orientation and require analytical processing, while the Vandenberg and Kuse Mental Rotation Test is …

Bi-Consonantal Reduplication In Amharic And Ethio-Semitic, Peter Edward Unseth May 2002

Bi-Consonantal Reduplication In Amharic And Ethio-Semitic, Peter Edward Unseth

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation is a study of the consonant reduplication process in Amharic, a process which is herein named “Bi-Consonantal Reduplication.” In this process, the last two consonants of a root are repeated, a process that has never been studied in a systematic way in Amharic or any other Semitic language. Previous authors have used a variety of labels for this process, too often writing their definitions in ways that include other types of reduplication or that exclude some genuine examples of this reduplication pattern. This dissertation provides a more precise definition for this process that includes all and only genuine …

The Philadelphia Phillies: Why Do They Play To An Empty Stadium?, Christine A. Bosco

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was threefold: 1) to determine fans' attitudes about the Philadelphia Phillies, 2) to determine why there is low attendance at Phillies home games, and 3) to determine how fans can be lured back to the stadium. A sample (n = 100) from the Philadelphia and southern New Jersey areas was chosen to complete a 12-question survey. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered. Data was processed through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences for frequencies and cross-tabulations. Major findings from the study include: 36% of respondents indicated that ticket price was their first consideration …

Book Review: Reimagining Indians: Native Americans Through Anglo Eyes, 1880-1940 By Sherry L. Smith, Lincoln Faller May 2002

Book Review: Reimagining Indians: Native Americans Through Anglo Eyes, 1880-1940 By Sherry L. Smith, Lincoln Faller

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Without Indians-or, rather, their imaginings of them-white Americans would hardly know how to define themselves. This well-researched and clearly written book offers biographical sketches of six men and four women who, writing about Native Americans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, seem to have done as much if not more to reimagine themselves.

Book Review: Telling Tales: Essays In Western Women's History, Jane Reid Thompson May 2002

Book Review: Telling Tales: Essays In Western Women's History, Jane Reid Thompson

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This new collection of essays is a welcome contribution to the literature on women in the Canadian West from 1880 to 1940. It continues the fine work the editors started in their 1993 collection Standing on New Ground: Women in Alberta. Both the essays themselves and the editors' cogent and insightful introduction "show the diversity of newcomer women's experiences while highlighting common themes in the construction and reshaping of gender relationships during the colonization and settlement of western Canada." This volume will be of interest not just to scholars of Canadian women's history but of women in the North …
