Research As A Learning Experience: A Phenomenological Explication, Charlotte Pietersen
Research As A Learning Experience: A Phenomenological Explication, Charlotte Pietersen
The Qualitative Report
A phenomenological method was employed to explore the learning experiences of seven honours psychology learners who have completed research projects. The research event was experienced as a learning adventure, a period of personal growth, and also lead to a strong appreciation of the differences between doing research in practice and research as described in texts. They regarded time management and problem solving skills as important prerequisites to successful research. Findings provide guidelines for academics involved in the research training of learners and are a useful source of information, to provide insight into and alert learners to the challenges of research.
Going Beyond The Demonstrable Range In Educational Scholarship: Exploring The Intersections Of Poetry And Research, Liza Hayes Percer
Going Beyond The Demonstrable Range In Educational Scholarship: Exploring The Intersections Of Poetry And Research, Liza Hayes Percer
The Qualitative Report
This essay reflects on experimental writing that incorporates poetry into research. The author supports the move toward research writing that breaks the constraints of traditional academic writing, but raises the concern that such writing must not casually adopt the form and name of poetry without studying the craft. Along these lines, she suggests that in order for work that introduces poetry into research to be done effectively, researchers must study the craft of writing poetry as critically as they study the craft of writing research. Finally, the author suggests that instead of attempting to map poetry onto research, researchers may …
The Technicity Paradigm And Scientism In Qualitative Research, Carol J. Steiner
The Technicity Paradigm And Scientism In Qualitative Research, Carol J. Steiner
The Qualitative Report
This philosophical paper suggests that almost all academic research, including qualitative research, is conducted under the influence of a "technicity paradigm" which values objectivity, generalisability and rationality. This paper explores, from a Heideggerian perspective, the fundamental characteristics of research under the influence of technicity and discusses how these characteristics manifest in qualitative research. It includes a reflection on what qualitative research might be like if it could escape the influence of technicity and realise its potential for inclusive and relevant knowledge making.
"Planned Barriers" Against Destructive Psychological Processes In Care Organizations, Gurli Fyhr
"Planned Barriers" Against Destructive Psychological Processes In Care Organizations, Gurli Fyhr
The Qualitative Report
This is the first study in a long-term qualitative, theory generating, research project aimed at uncovering conditions that facilitate development of destructive psychological processes in care organizations. Special focus was put on three previously identified problem areas, i.e., staff privileges, conflicting educational traditions/cultures among staff, and psychological reparative work on the part of the staff. A special approved home for teenage boys with serious psychosocial, drug and criminal problems was studied. The strategy used was grounded theory together with abductive reasoning. Data were collected using institutional documents, questionnaires and individual psychotherapeutic interviews. In spite of a target group with serious …
Getting At The Moral Leadership Of Education Deans, Shelley B. Wepner, Antonia D'Onofrio, Bernice Willis, Stephen C. Wilhite
Getting At The Moral Leadership Of Education Deans, Shelley B. Wepner, Antonia D'Onofrio, Bernice Willis, Stephen C. Wilhite
The Qualitative Report
Vignettes were used to prompt four education deans to think aloud about ways in which they would resolve problems with embedded moral issues. Thematic coding was used to analyze the interview texts that had been tape recorded and transcribed. There was general support for the two moral themes of holding to broad social ideals and negotiating for mutually acceptable outcomes, but individual expressions of specific strategies and actions differed. The results of this study support a multi-dimensional approach to the study of the leadership of deans that simultaneously examines the moral, social, intellectual and emotional aspects of problem solving. The …

The Canon Is El Boom, Et. Al., Or The Hispanic Difference, Gene H. Bell-Villada
The Canon Is El Boom, Et. Al., Or The Hispanic Difference, Gene H. Bell-Villada
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article, Gene H. Bell-Villada's "The Canon is el Boom, et. al., or the Hispanic Difference," argues that the rich, globally acclaimed, foundational yet contestatory prose literature produced in Latin America allows teachers and scholars of Spanish to teach what is essentially the "canon" via work that is still fresh, yet historically provocative. Bell-Villada argues that in a time of reconsidering the importance of literature in literature programs, programs of Spanish language and culture should continue to teach this rich cultural legacy. The average U. S. student's condescension toward Spanish and Latin American culture can be transformed to respect …
First Peoples Of The Americas And Their Literature, Gordon Brotherston, Lúcia De Sá
First Peoples Of The Americas And Their Literature, Gordon Brotherston, Lúcia De Sá
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their paper, "First Peoples of the Americas and Their Literature," Gordon Brotherston and Lúcia de Sá turn their attention to the indigenous literature of the Americas. They point out that concerted attempts to edit, translate, and publish the main examples or "classics" of Native American literature began little more than a century ago. Since that time, more than a dozen major cosmogonies have appeared, some of them in editions, which seriously attempt to trace back to pre-Cortesian antecedents. Outlining key classics and the ways that these texts have been disseminated, Brotherston and Sá elaborate on how this rich tradition …

It is based oil a case study of ail actual implementation by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with a number of other organizations to upgrade the capabilities of automotive component suppliers in India, to enable them to supply to world-class Manufacturers. We draw upon the traditional literature available on new product and service development for firms introducing new products and services for maximizing profit, and contrast those approaches with the approach adopted by nonprofit …
The Necessities And Luxuries Of Mate Preferences: Testing The Tradeoffs, Norman P. Li, J. Michael Bailey, Douglas T. Kenrick, Joan A. W. Linsenmeier
The Necessities And Luxuries Of Mate Preferences: Testing The Tradeoffs, Norman P. Li, J. Michael Bailey, Douglas T. Kenrick, Joan A. W. Linsenmeier
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Social exchange and evolutionary models of mate selection incorporate economic assumptions but have not considered a key distinction between necessities and luxuries. This distinction can clarify an apparent paradox: Status and attractiveness, though emphasized by many researchers, are not typically rated highly by research participants. Three studies supported the hypothesis that women and men first ensure sufficient levels of necessities in potential mates before considering many other characteristics rated as more important in prior surveys. In Studies 1 and 2, participants designed ideal long-term mates, purchasing various characteristics with 3 different budgets. Study 3 used a mate-screening paradigm and showed …
Equality And Diversity, Chandran Kukathas
Equality And Diversity, Chandran Kukathas
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The foundations of human inequality lie in the fact of human diversity, or in the human tendency to differentiate from some while associating with others to form groups. The diversity which results from association and differentiation makes equality unattainable. Diversity and equality are incompatible, and attempts to promote one can only be made at the expense of the other. In these circumstances, we should abandon the ideal of equality as incapable of offering us an adequate understanding of the nature of the good society.
Child Labor In Egypt, Dina Ismail El Shafei
Child Labor In Egypt, Dina Ismail El Shafei
Theses and Dissertations
Child labor is a complex worldwide problem, especially in LDCs where poverty and low educational standards are persistent. A survey of child labor worldwide finds that children are working in considerable numbers throughout many regions of the world. Each region differs in the extent of child labor and the specific sectors where children may be found working. However, the main reasons behind the work of children namely poverty and education, were common in all areas. Egypt represents a typical case where child labor exists in most of its forms, except for prostitution, traficking and child bondage, and is mainly caused …
Growth And Volatility, Hing-Man Leung
Growth And Volatility, Hing-Man Leung
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper has two objectives. First, to establish empirically a U-shaped relation between GDP growth rate and income volatility. The backward as well as the fast-growing countries have had extensive volatility; but developed nations by contrast have enjoyed much more stable income. Second, to present a macroeconomic model to study how growth and volatility evolve together. The twin endogenous variables are financial liberalization interacting with liquidity constraints. Opening LDC financial markets could raise or lower their long-term income and growth rates, depending on the severity of existing liquidity constraints. Financial liberalization and removing financial market imperfections unambiguously worsen income volatility.
Strategic Development Of Airport And Rail Infrastructure: The Case Of Singapore, Sock-Yong Phang
Strategic Development Of Airport And Rail Infrastructure: The Case Of Singapore, Sock-Yong Phang
Research Collection School Of Economics
This article recounts how a number of strategic infrastructure investment decisions in airport and rail development taken by the Singapore government were at variance with recommendations emerging from Cost-Benefit Analysis, but were considered necessary to support external competitiveness. This link between infrastructure provision and economic development may require decision makers to assess the trade-off between prudent macro-economic planning and efficient micro-economic management for major projects. In the case of airport hubs, the most difficult assessment might be the game consideration of how much, and how far ahead, excess capacity is needed to ensure the dominance of the hub.
How Should We Interpret Evidence Of Time Varying Conditional Skewness?, Gamini Premaratne, Anthony S. Tay
How Should We Interpret Evidence Of Time Varying Conditional Skewness?, Gamini Premaratne, Anthony S. Tay
Research Collection School Of Economics
Several recent articles report evidence of predictability in the skewness of equity returns, raising hopes that predictability in third moments will be useful for forecasting the probability of tail events. The evidence is unfortunately difficult to interpret, partly because they were obtained mainly from parametric models of time-varying conditional skewness, and because little is known about the behavior of such models, for instance, when there are outliers. We investigate a non-parametric approach to testing for predictability in skewness. Specifically, we explore the size and power of a Runs tests, and compare this approach with other tests. A re-examination of daily …

Child, Parent, And Peer Predictors Of Early-Onset Substance Use: A Multisite Longitudinal Study, Julie B Kaplow, Patrick J Curran, Kenneth A Dodge
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
The purpose of this study was to identify kindergarten-age predictors of early-onset substance use from demographic, environmental, parenting, child psychological, behavioral, and social functioning domains. Data from a longitudinal study of 295 children were gathered using multiple-assessment methods and multiple informants in kindergarten and 1st grade. Annual assessments at ages 10, 11, and 12 reflected that 21% of children reported having initiated substance use by age 12. Results from longitudinal logistic regression models indicated that risk factors at kindergarten include being male, having a parent who abused substances, lower levels of parental verbal reasoning, higher levels of overactivity, more thought …

Developer-Planner Interaction In Transportation And Land Use Sustainability, Mti Report 01-21, Aseem Inam
Developer-Planner Interaction In Transportation And Land Use Sustainability, Mti Report 01-21, Aseem Inam
Mineta Transportation Institute
This study argues that significant unmet demand exists for alternatives to conventional auto-oriented development; and further that planning interventions that restrict densities and land use mixing in developed areas are a major reason that this demand remains unmet. In order to explore these hypotheses, this study carried out two principal investigations. The first is a national survey of developers, randomly selected from the database of the Urban Land Institute in Washington, DC, the premiere national organization of land developers. Overall, the survey reveals considerable interest on the part of the private development community in developing in a fashion that is …
Land Use And Transportation Alternatives: Constraint Or Expansion Of Household Choice, Mti Report 01-19, Jonathan Levine
Land Use And Transportation Alternatives: Constraint Or Expansion Of Household Choice, Mti Report 01-19, Jonathan Levine
Mineta Transportation Institute
Transportation and land use research that considers such alternatives as New Urbanist development, jobs-housing balance, transit villages, or “smart growth” most typically tests the capacity of such physical forms to reduce vehicle miles traveled (VMT) or bring about other desired outcomes in the modification of travel behavior. Establishing such causality is broadly seen as a precondition for the urban planning interventions that are presumed to be necessary to bring these forms about. But such a view neglects the extent to which current interventions—notably zoning and transportation regulations—tend to preclude the development of such innovations in areas of high accessibility where …

Increasing Transit Ridership: Lessons From The Most Successful Transit Systems In The 1990s, Mti Report-01-22, Brian D. Taylor, Peter J. Haas, Brent Boyd, Daniel Baldwin Hess, Hiroyuki Iseki, Allison Yoh
Mineta Transportation Institute
This study systematically examines recent trends in public transit ridership in the U.S. during the 1990s. Specifically, this analysis focuses on agencies that increased ridership during the latter half of the decade. While transit ridership increased steadily by 13 percent nationwide between 1995 and 1999, not all systems experienced ridership growth equally. While some agencies increased ridership dramatically, some did so only minimally, and still others lost riders. What sets these agencies apart from each other? What explains the uneven growth in ridership?
The Link Between Smoking And Body Weight Among Adolescents, Tracey Barnett
The Link Between Smoking And Body Weight Among Adolescents, Tracey Barnett
Dissertations
Trends in smoking rates among adolescents indicate that white females generally smoke more than their adolescent counterparts, the only substance in which this occurs. Another trend in which white females far outnumber any other adolescent group is eating disorders. This study was conducted to assess the relationship between cigarette smoking and perception of weight among adolescents. A logistic regression model was constructed to test the relationship using the Adolescent Health Public Dataset. For females, there was a link between cigarette smoking and perception of overweight which was not found among the males. Similarly, white females had a significantly higher rate …
