Surveying The Future: An Innovative Tool For Expressing Stakeholder Vision As Demonstrated In Lawrence Township Public Schools, Jessica Reynolds Haviland

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to create a survey instrument that will allow all stakeholders in a school district to share their thoughts, opinions, and attitudes regarding their vision for the future. The results of this survey will be used to create a vision statement to clarify goals, prioritize activities, and unify stakeholders in the pursuit of a desired future. This survey can serve as a benchmark, against which a school district can measure progress toward its goals. The survey instrument will also be a template, which can be used by other organizations to assess their publics' vision for …

Western Attitudes Toward The Korean Language: An Overview Of Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth-Century Mission Literature, David J. Silva Jun 2002

Western Attitudes Toward The Korean Language: An Overview Of Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth-Century Mission Literature, David J. Silva

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Descriptions of Korea’s linguistic situation written by Westerners during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries not only reveal native and foreign attitudes toward the Korean language but also provide insight into language-focused evangelization tactics embraced by Christian missionaries. Upon their arrival in Korea during the 1800s, Westerners encountered a long-standing system of diglossia: socio-historical relations between China and Korea gave rise to the use of various Korean “lects” in which the degree of Chinese elements differed. Moreover, the nation’s indigenous writing system, han’g1l, was widely regarded by Koreans as culturally subordinate to Chinese script, an attitude that garnered much attention …

Planning For Regional Economic Development In Oregon: Finding A Place For Equity Issues In Regional Governance, John Provo Jun 2002

Planning For Regional Economic Development In Oregon: Finding A Place For Equity Issues In Regional Governance, John Provo

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

While the state of Oregon is cited in the new regionalism literature for exemplary land use and environmental planning, this paper focuses on the treatment of equity issues. Implementation of a revised statewide regional economic development program is discussed, contrasting efforts in the metropolitan Portland area with rural southeast Oregon. Despite following very different planning and grant-making processes, both introduced equity issues concerned with ensuring access to the economy. In Portland this meant aspiring to connect economically distressed communities with a successful regional economy while in southeast Oregon a distressed region hoped to connect with the state's growing economy.

First Recipients Of Anthropological Doctorates In The United States, 1891-1930, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

This article seeks to show the origins of the professionalization of anthropology by examining early doctoral dissertations in this field and their authors. The bibliography consists of citations with biographical details of the authors, when known, of doctoral dissertations in anthropology from United States educational institutions up to 1930. One hundred twenty-four citations are given in all, representing 18 institutions. Forty-one of the dissertations were not written for degrees in anthropology. Besides documenting the existence of anthropological work outside recognized graduate programs of anthropology, the bibliography provides a demographic profile of anthropology and shows the distribution of subdiscipline concentrations and …

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

In order to compare and contrast the efficacy of haloperidol, carbamazepine, and valproic acid in the treatment of Sydenham's chorea a prospective study including 18 cases of this disorder was undertaken. Age of patients ranged from 7 to 15 years. Ten children were female and 8 were male. All but one had generalized, either symmetric or asymmetric chorea. The patients were divided in three equal groups, and were given a standardized dose of each of the drugs built-up over a week. Following therapy, the six children receiving valproic acid showed remarkable improvement, without side effects. Five patients receiving carbamazepine showed …

Error Bounds And Asymptotic Expansions For Toeplitz Product Functionals Of Unbounded Spectra, Offer Lieberman, Peter C.B. Phillips Jun 2002

Error Bounds And Asymptotic Expansions For Toeplitz Product Functionals Of Unbounded Spectra, Offer Lieberman, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper establishes error orders for integral limit approximations to traces of powers to the p th order) of products of Toeplitz matrices. Such products arise frequently in the analysis of stationary time series and in the development of asymptotic expansions. The elements of the matrices are Fourier transforms of functions which we allow to be bounded, unbounded, or even to vanish on [- π,π ], thereby including important cases such as the spectral functions of fractional processes. Error rates are also given in the case in which the matrix product involves inverse matrices. The rates are sharp up to …

More Efficient Kernel Estimation In Nonparametric Regression With Autocorrelated Errors, Zhijie Xiao, Oliver B. Linton, Raymond J. Carroll, E. Mammen Jun 2002

More Efficient Kernel Estimation In Nonparametric Regression With Autocorrelated Errors, Zhijie Xiao, Oliver B. Linton, Raymond J. Carroll, E. Mammen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We propose a modification of kernel time series regression estimators that improves efficiency when the innovation process is autocorrelated. The procedure is based on a pre-whitening transformation of the dependent variable that has to be estimated from the data. We establish the asymptotic distribution of our estimator under weak dependence conditions. It is shown that the proposed estimation procedure is more efficient than the conventional kernel method. We also provide simulation evidence to suggest that gains can be achieved in moderate sized samples.

Self-Perceived Language Competence And East Asian Students’ Oral Participation In American University Classrooms, Ee Lin Lee Jun 2002

Self-Perceived Language Competence And East Asian Students’ Oral Participation In American University Classrooms, Ee Lin Lee

Masters Theses

This study examined English language related competence factors that contribute to East Asian students' (EAS) oral participation levels in American university classrooms. Specifically, this study posited that EAS' self-perceived English communicative competence, English speaking anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation affect their level of oral participation. The results of the statistical analyses supported the hypothesized relationships, indicating (a) EAS' self-perceived English communicative competence correlates positively with their level of oral participation, (b) EAS' reported level of English speaking anxiety correlates negatively with their level of oral participation, and (c) EAS' level of fear of negative evaluation correlates negatively with their …

Progressive Race Blindness?: Individual Identity, Group Politics, And Reform, Darren Lenard Hutchinson Jun 2002

Progressive Race Blindness?: Individual Identity, Group Politics, And Reform, Darren Lenard Hutchinson

UF Law Faculty Publications

Critical Race Theorists advance race consciousness as a positive instrument for political and legal reform. A growing body of works by left-identified scholars, however, challenges this traditional progressive stance toward race consciousness. After summarizing the contours of this budding literature, this Article criticizes the "progressive race blindness" scholarship on several grounds and offers an alternative approach to race consciousness that balances skepticism towards the naturalness of race with a healthy appreciation of the realities of racial subjugation and identity.

Information Literacy Instruction In Higher Education: Trends And Issues, Abby Kasowitz-Scheer, Michael Pasqualoni

Librarian Publications

Students today face a daily explosion of information resources and the challenge of using these resources effectively and responsibly. Information literacy instruction (ILI) requires a shift in focus from teaching specific information resources to a set of critical thinking skills involving the use of information. ILI in an academic setting includes a variety of instructional approaches, such as course-related library instruction sessions, course-integrated projects, online tutorials, and stand-alone courses. Those running formal ILI programs consider curricular objectives, invoking combinations of instructional solutions over a period of time. This ERIC Digest examines characteristics of successful programs, presents specific examples of approaches …

Demographic profiles have been created for at the regional and community levels for San Diego County. There is an individual demographic profile for each of 10 Community Collaboratives in San Diego County as a whole. The demographic profiles all have the same structure and consist of the same variables to provide consistency so that comparisons can be made between communities. The profiles were created to provide background information for a larger project, the development of Quality of Life Indices for the San Diego County Alcohol and Drug Services Agency.

Transportation: A Crucial Issue For Adult Day Care In Vermont, Francis G. Caro, Regula H. Robnett, Jennifer Higgins Jun 2002

Transportation: A Crucial Issue For Adult Day Care In Vermont, Francis G. Caro, Regula H. Robnett, Jennifer Higgins

Gerontology Institute Publications

Transportation arrangements are an integral but fragile element in the effectiveness of adult day care services in Vermont and nationwide. Almost by definition, adult day center participants generally cannot drive due to cognitive and/or physical limitations. Since adult day care services are congregate in nature and serve community-residing elders, this long-term care option is feasible only when there are arrangements to transport elders to and from service centers. Transportation is therefore a major issue for adult day care services.

The aim of this report is to call attention to transportation issues in adult day care services in Vermont. The report …

Playing The Game: Exploring Dialectical Tensions And Co-Cultural Communication Strategies Of Black Males In Predominantly White Organizational Structures, Mark C. Hopson Jun 2002

Playing The Game: Exploring Dialectical Tensions And Co-Cultural Communication Strategies Of Black Males In Predominantly White Organizational Structures, Mark C. Hopson

Masters Theses

As non-dominant group members enter and attempt to succeed within the United States' organizational structures, there continues to be a need for scholarly examination concerning how their communication is impacted by culture and power. This thesis focuses specifically on how discourse is influenced by these factors. It is an exploration of the dialectical tensions that beset the communication of African American males whose interactive success or failure in academic and professional organizations is often associated with the historical differences of culture and power. A review of existing literature addresses the communication dilemmas and co-cultural strategies that "outsiders within" (Collins, 1986), …

The Urban Landscape Of Health, Hygiene, And Social Control: The Development Of Municipal Services In Battle Creek, Michigan, Jared Lee Barrett Jun 2002

The Urban Landscape Of Health, Hygiene, And Social Control: The Development Of Municipal Services In Battle Creek, Michigan, Jared Lee Barrett

Masters Theses

This thesis is outlining the introduction of municipal water and sewer by using archaeological evidence. First, I will lay out a theoretical framework in which this research will be conducted. It will outline what social control is, how others have examined it, and how is it used by elites to retain their position in society. Next, it will outline the health, social, political, and economic conditions that existed that would give rise to this transition from privies and cisterns to municipal water and sewer services. Then the James and Ellen White site (20CA118) will be used to give evidence of …

The Outcomes Of Trauma For Older Adults, Shaun M. Mcmillan Jun 2002

The Outcomes Of Trauma For Older Adults, Shaun M. Mcmillan

Masters Theses

Previous sociological and public health studies were analyzed to determine the effects of age, gender, mechanism of injury (fall or motor vehicle crash accident), severity of the injury, length of stay and injuries sustained on three binary response variables of discharge disposition ( discharged home, expired, or transferred to a rehabilitation facility) of older adult trauma patients. Three multiple logistic regression models were analyzed to handle the multiple predictors for the three binary response variables of discharge disposition. Over one-half (56%) of respondents were discharged home, whereas one in four patients were transferred to a rehabilitative facility, while the remaining …

The Socratic Method In The Introductory Pr Course: An Alternative Pedagogy, Michael G. Parkinson, Daradirek Ekachai

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

In the recent past several educators and practitioners have advocated the use of a Socratic dialogue or case method to teach public relations principles. Reported here are the results of an empirical study comparing student reactions to and perceptions of learning in introductory public relations courses using a traditional lecture format and a Socratic approach. The independent variables in this study are lecture and Socratic teaching methods. It was hypothesized that compared to students in a traditional course, students in the Socratic course would: (1) retain more factual information about public relations, (2) feel more confident in their knowledge and …
