The Effects Of Reading Poetry In Library Classes On Circulation Of The Library’S Poetry Collection, Mary Musselman

Many of the elementary poetry books on the shelves of the Manson Northwest Webster Barnum Center library in Barnum, Iowa were not being checked out by students. By reading poetry from those books to third and fourth graders during library time the librarian hoped to stimulate interest in those poetry books and increase circulation of them. After keeping track of the poetry book circulation before and after reading poetry to the groups, the reading did in fact increase the circulation of the poetry books significantly at the .05 level.

Literacy events of some sort occur most everyday in every home. Most schools have not considered some children's homes to be a source of rich literacy experiences, yet literacy practices are embedded within the daily routines of almost every family (McCarthey, 1997). The opportunities provided for children's participation in literacy practices in the home environment are closely related to parents' own literacy use at home. This article presents case studies of four families that each had a child involved in America Reads, a federally funded after-school program. The purpose of this study was to investigate the collection development process in lower school media centers in overseas American and international schools in Asia to see if the collections reflect the ethnic diversity of the student body.

Admissions Directors of the schools were asked to provide information regarding the citizenship of the students in kindergarten through grade five in their schools. A questionnaire was sent to the media specialists at the six schools in the International Association of Southeast Asian Schools conference. The Clark County Fire Department has no formal career development path for fire prevention (civilian) personnel as it does for suppression (sworn) personnel. The purpose of this paper is to compare the career paths developed for suppression personnel and prevention personnel in five fire departments throughout the State of Nevada. Each department was chosen because they have over 100 total employees. Three dimensions relevant to the extent to which a career development path exists were identified and each department was assessed terms of these dimensions. Math, spelling, geography, shopping, banking-it's all in the computer and on the web. All that will be left to us is to eat pizza and watch DVDs. Well, maybe there aren' t thousands of reports, but there are a lot, like, maybe three. OK, so I didn't actually see any reports myself, but the guys who hang at Harvey's Hardware know these things.

Initial subscriptions to the index were made following conference in 1999 after the official ribbon cutting at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. Libraries have successfully setup access both by ip recognition and by password for patrons accessing the library's databases remotely. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit den wenig erforschten, komplexen Wechselwirkungen zwischen der rapide voranschreitenden globalen Marktvergesellschaftung einerseits sowie den Marktkulturen in Südostasien, in denen ethnischchinesische Unternehmer, Geschäftsleute und Händler mit ihren Familienkonglomeraten und Handelsnetzwerken eine prominente Rolle spielen. Ausgehend von der Asienkrise 1997-99, die eine deutliche Zäsur für ethnisch-chinesisches Wirtschaftshandeln in der Region darstellt, werden die Auswirkungen der rapiden Wandlungsprozesse auf das ethnisch-chinesische Unternehmertum in der Region und deren sozio-ökonomische Beziehungsnetzwerke skizziert sowie unternehmerische Anpassungsstrategien aufgezeigt. Der Beitrag schliesst mit einer kurzen Prognose über die Zukunft des chinesischen Kapitalismus in Asien.

What relevance criteria do users apply when selecting a speech recording? What attributes of the recording do they rely on for each criterion? This paper proses a qualitative research study design to explore those questions. A conceptual framework is presented, research questions are introduced, and the study design is described. The paper concludes with some observations on how the results of the study might inform the design of future systems.

Oral history - and spoken word collections generally - are assuming increasing importance in digital libraries as the storage, transmission and reproduction infrastructure improves. This paper describes three synergistic approaches to user needs analysis, explains how they are being applied to guide the design of systems to provide access oral history collections (using a s test bed the Shoah Foundations collection of over 50,000 videotaped oral history interviews), presents preliminary results from so -called “discount requirements analysis” and an analysis of “early access” requests, and draws some design implications. The essay is based on a survey of organizational change management practices in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Singapore which was conducted by the authors between 1999 - 2001 in collaboration with the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI). The study was aimed at examining the adaptability and change readiness of Singapore’s SMEs and their owners vis-à-vis the rapidly changing external business environment, as exemplified by the process of economic globalization, intense competition, technology development and the Asian crisis. This study provides an extension to the Charismatic Leadership theories by delineating the roles of rhetoric content: in frame alignment and trust building. Propositions were developed from past literature on the rhetorical behaviors of Charismatic Leadership and the interpersonal trust literature. An empirical study was then conducted to test the propositions developed and it was found that Mr. Lee Kuan Yew use the Singapore National Day Rally speeches in limited ways to align frames and build trust.

This largely descriptive book sets out three questions of interest to international relations scholars and policy-makers: What is global civil society? What are its origins? And what are the roles of individuals in creating and maintaining it? After a brief literature review, the book provides a definition: global civil society is 'a socially constructed and transnationally defined network of relationships that provides ideologically variable channels of opportunity for political involvement' (p. 19). An econometric analysis of the World Food Programme Civil Insecurity Baseline Survey (1998) and Cambodia Socio-Economic Survey (1999) data is undertaken to examine the role of education and literacy in explaining household expenditure, as hypothesized in human capital theory where education is an investment with returns in the form of income. Explanatory variables were selected from a large set of observed variables by a systematic procedure to avoid the bias arising from arbitrary model selection. Spousal education and literacy are found to be significant explanatory variables in the determination of household expenditure, exceeding even the coefficients attached to the head …

Control charts for monitoring process variability, such as the R-chart and S-chart, do not have symmetric probability limits as the distribution of the sample variability is not normal. Hence, the usual zone rules can not be applied although it is still desirable to be able to use the information from more than one point in decision making. In this paper, a modified S-chart based on an optimal normalizing transformation of the sample variance is first introduced. Policymakers seeking to design efficient and smoothly functioning pension systems for their aging workforces are beginning to acknowledge the key importance of administrative expenses when formulating rules for pension plan structure and fee disclosure requirements. This study explores the links between retirement plan offerings and pension expenses for a wide range of private and public sector pension plan types, using an invaluable new data set on two thousand Australian pension funds. Our analysis indicates how pension plan design can strongly influence plan expenses and consequently eventual retirement security.

In this article we propose a new multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (MGARCH) model with time-varying correlations. We adopt the vech representation based on the conditional variances and the conditional correlations. Whereas each conditional-variance term is assumed to follow a univariate GARCH formulation, the conditional-correlation matrix is postulated to follow an autoregressive moving average type of analog. Our new model retains the intuition and interpretation of the univariate GARCH model and yet satisfies the positive-definite condition as found in the constant-correlation and Baba-Engle-Kraft-Kroner models We report some Monte Carlo results on the finite-sample distributions of the maximum likelihood estimate of …
