Searching For Connections Between Domestic Violence And Social Conflict In Northern Ireland, Jeffrey M. Roberts

This Independent Problem Analysis explores the connection between domestic violence and social conflict in Northern Ireland. Specifically, it will review selected literature on domestic violence and examine social and cultural attitudes regarding violence in Northern Ireland. It will then analyze whether and how occurrences of domestic violence in Northern Ireland are affected by broader social conflict.

This analysis will begin with an overview of conflict theories that will be used to show depth of understanding in the conflict discipline and to determine a specific direction for the problem analysis. This will be followed by an exploration of factors that combine …

Discusses the Native American view of Crater Lake, Oregon, as a place of religious significance and the misunderstandings with whites as to its importance to Oregon's Indian tribes. Created some 6,500 years ago by volcanic eruption, Crater Lake has long been seen by Indians as a sacred place. Their hunting, berry gathering, and vision quests in the lake area were tied to their religious view of the lake. Since the 1850's, whites have treated the lake with a lack of understanding of its significance to the Klamath tribes. The National Park Service restricted hunting and charged Indians fees to pass …

In my work with the tribes and First Nations of western North America, I am told the same stories again and again. In intricate and sometimes gruesome detail, I am told how the white world, in its efforts to occupy and claim the western half of the continent over the last two centuries, employed myriad strategies—strategies of conquest—to separate indigenous peoples from their lands. Handling Competing Values In Ethics, Economics, & Management: A Cross-Cultural Empirical Study Of American & Danish Managerial Attitudes, Annemette Kruse Jensen

This empirical cross-cultural research was conducted to confirm four hypotheses. The hypotheses included: 1) For American managers there will be at least a 0.55 correlation or more among their ethics, economic, and management attitudes; 2) American managers more than Danish managers will tend to emphasize control in their ethics, economic, and management attitudes; 3) Danish managers more than American managers will exhibit emphasis and correlation among Virtue Ethics, Community Capitalism, and Human Relations theories and attitudes; 4) Danish managers more than American managers will exhibit extreme managerial practice attitudes according to the Competing Values Framework. Although playing is generally viewed as a childhood universal--an expected and somewhat innocuous part of children's lives--Chicano writers often particularize play's universality by constructing the diverse grounds of childhood play as sites that encapsulate conflicting subject positions. Among the Chicano texts in which playing shares this complexity as a critical locus for the child protagonist is Américo Paredes' George Washington Gómez. Paredes employs narratives of childhood play in a dialectical pattern that elucidates his protagonist's inner and outer conflicts and that also evokes Ramón Saldívar's theory of Chicano literature. Art Spiegelman's Maus, Cynthia Ozick's The Shawl, and Eva Hoffman's Lost in Translation and Exit into History are recent American texts that draw upon cultural histories of Poland to launch their narratives. Each text confronts and reconstructs fragments of twentieth-century Poland at the interactive sites of collective culture and personal memory. By focusing on the contested relationship between Poles and Jews before, during, and after World War II, these texts dredge up the ghosts of centuries-long ethnic animosities. In the post-Cold War era, wherein Eastern Europe struggles to redefine itself, such texts have a formative influence in re-mapping the future …

Jane M.Gaines has written an important book on the topic of race movies and race relations in early American cinema. Using eclectic analyses that range from W.E.B. DuBois' insights on "double consciousness," to queer theory, Gaines is able to critically examine issues of mixed race people and race mixing in silent films. She wonderfully reworks some theories until they yield beneficial interpretations. San Juan, Jr.'s most recent study, Racism and Cultural Studies. Contemporary postmodern and postcolonial intellectual movements, because they valorize individualized discourses and relativist pluralism, have indeed "displaced the centrality of mass social movements" in the project of group liberation in San Juan's judgment.

This research note provides the general findings from a research project analyzing the reasons behind the lower unemployment rate of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland, compared with the Finnish-speaking majority. The main conclusion is that the unemployment gap cannot be attributed to ethnic-group differences in age, education, place of residence, or industrial structure. We believe that two latent factors are highly relevant in this context: language proficiency and social integration, although no data presently available provides information about such issues.

Working Memory In Schizophrenics And Older Adults : A Mediator For Episodic Memory Deficits?, Matthew W. Webster

The purpose of this study was to determine the role of working memory on episodic memory in older adults and adults with schizophrenia. This study included 15 adults with schizophrenia, 20 young adults without psychopathology, and 21 older adults without psychopathology. Storage working memory scores were greater than processing working memory scores in all groups. Young adults had the fewest problems with episodic and working memory, compared to older adults and adults with schizophrenia, who had similar deficits in both memory types. Speed of processing was found to be the greatest predictor of working memory capacity.

This study examined the dynamics of the parent-child relationship by determining whether or not the quality of parent-child attachment and communication patterns are related to child endorsed adjustment outcomes. In addition, examination of the parentchild relationship is useful way to better understand the domain of psychological maltreatment, and likewise, attachment and communication quality are suggested to major contributing factors to the development of psychological maltreatment. 42 children completed the Parent-Adolescent Communication scale (PACS), the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), and the Emotional Symptoms Index (ESI). 22 parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Matson Evaluation of …

Climate change has had a drastic impact on the planet on a biological, political, and socioeconomic level. The excessive consumption of natural resources and human-induced pollution has contributed to rising temperatures, intensified weather patterns, and an increase in natural disasters (Nations, 2019). This has led to high levels of eco-anxiety and grief in younger generations, driven by psychological factors, misinformation, and governmental resistance to meaningful change which has influenced inaction in individuals (Hickman et al, 2021). Employers and unions in several states during the 1990s were allowed to "carve out" their own workers' compensation systems. These innovative reforms gave the parties the right to collectively bargain their own systems outside the statutory systems. In addition, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) systems were implemented in order speed the legal process and reduce litigation costs. This book offers an evaluation of the first few years' experience with these organizational reforms in California.
