Communal Participatory Action Research As A Strategy For Improving Universities And The Social Sciences: Penn's Work With The West Philadelphia Improvement Corps As A Case Study, Lee Benson, Ira Harkavy, John Puckett Jun 1996

Communal Participatory Action Research As A Strategy For Improving Universities And The Social Sciences: Penn's Work With The West Philadelphia Improvement Corps As A Case Study, Lee Benson, Ira Harkavy, John Puckett

Higher Education

As the 20th century closes, a key question is: What can the social sciences do to help solve the problems of our society and world? The authors identify the principal causes of the crisis in the university and the social sciences to be intellectual fragmentation and a structural contradiction that is built into the American research university. They then propose a radical reorientation of American universities toward helping solve real-world problems-particularly those in a university's local community. The authors suggest that such an orientation can be achieved through communal participatory action research projects designed to help change society. This research …

Let me get right to the point and give you a sense of why the Corporation for National Service sees Community Colleges as such critical partners in our effort. Your students across the country have been engaged in community service for many years. Indeed, during the past decade we have seen a resurgence of grassroots activity that helped catapult the issue of service onto the national agenda. Now we are asking institutions of higher education and their students to continue their leadership and involvement.

A Pre-Negotiation Guide To The Conflict In Northern Ireland, Padraig O'Malley Jun 1996

A Pre-Negotiation Guide To The Conflict In Northern Ireland, Padraig O'Malley

McCormack Graduate School General Publications (active until 2013)

On September 1, 1994, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) declared a ceasefire.

The declaration was potentially one of the most significant developments in Irish history since Ireland was partitioned in 1920. It represented, or at the time it seemed to represent, an acknowledgement by the IRA and its political wing, Sinn Fein, that Ireland cannot be united by physical force, that the armed struggle of the last twenty five years to drive the British out of Northern Ireland has not worked, that the strategy of "the Long War," based on the premise that if the IRA persisted in its campaign …

Changes In Communication After The Diagnosis Of An Illness, Kimberly M. Sniderman Jun 1996

Changes In Communication After The Diagnosis Of An Illness, Kimberly M. Sniderman

Masters Theses

A cancer, HIV, or AIDS diagnosis may alter a person's life. This may be exhibited communicatively, particularly when people with illnesses (PWI) disclose their diagnosis to people without illnesses (PWOI). The present study examined the premise that communication between PWI and PWOI was likely to be affected by illness disclosure. PWI were asked whether and how (positively or negatively) they perceived communication to change in family, doctor, nurse, other health care professional and their own contexts. Results indicated that PWI communication did change, though this was not found across contexts. Specific types of communication changes PWI experienced included greater openness, …

Three Discourses On Practice: A Postmodern Re-Appraisal, Peter Leonard Jun 1996

Three Discourses On Practice: A Postmodern Re-Appraisal, Peter Leonard

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The current debate about the knowledge claims of modernity has profound implications for theories and practices of social welfare, though postmodern critiques of its foundational beliefs should be approached cautiously. This paper suggests that a postmodern critique of three historically significant discourses -American casework, British social administration and Marxist social work - illustrates what might be learned from a deconstruction of their modernist assumptions as a stage in a reconstruction of social welfare ideas appropriate to postmodern conditions.

Speak Of The Devil: Rhetoric In Claims-Making About The Satanic Ritual Abuse Problem, Mary Deyoung Jun 1996

Speak Of The Devil: Rhetoric In Claims-Making About The Satanic Ritual Abuse Problem, Mary Deyoung

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper uses Toulmin's (1958) scheme to conduct a rhetorical analysis of claims being made in the construction of the satanic ritual abuse of children problem. The analysis reveals that the persistence of these claims over the last fifteen years is the product not of their compelling facts or their effective conclusions, but of their persuasive warrants. These implicit, "self-evident truths" resonate well with recent cultural concerns about the vulnerability of children to abuse, and the satanic menace.

Managed Computer System Conceptualization: Knowing When To Say No, Menachmen Monnickendam Jun 1996

Managed Computer System Conceptualization: Knowing When To Say No, Menachmen Monnickendam

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Computer systems in human services are often abandoned after significant investments have already been made. A case study of preventing the utilization of a wrong computer system for a child development center illustrates how managed system conceptualization minimized damage. Critical consciousness and adherence to specific computer implementation technology created an environment which supported recurrent system efficacy evaluation. When the system, as initially conceptualized, could not meet practitioners' needs, early project abandonment was achieved. Some considerations for successful system development in human service are presented.

Ecological Approach In Practice: A Case Study Of The Ounce Of Prevention Fund, Marilyn Fernandez, Laura Nichols Jun 1996

Ecological Approach In Practice: A Case Study Of The Ounce Of Prevention Fund, Marilyn Fernandez, Laura Nichols

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In an attempt to suggest ecologically sensitive program models which are developmentally responsive to the needs of adolescent parents and their children, this paper reviews existing research to identify the critical ecologies in their lives, evaluates existing program models for their ecological sensitivity, and presents a case study of the ecological approach in practice. Drawing from Bronfenbrenner's ecological perspective and typology of systems, the paper identifies family, partner, school, work, health care, neighborhood, poverty, and ethnicity as critical ecological systems in the lives of the adolescent and her child. Many existing program models do not systematically address all of these …

The Control Of The Monetary And Banking System By The Central Bank Of Nigeria., Paul A. Ogwuma

To this end, the paper is organised in five sections. After Section One which is the introduction, Section Two examines the conceptual framework of monetary and banking system control. This is followed by Section Three which reviewed the CBN's techniques of control and their changes over the years. Nigeria's Domestic Public Debt Stock: An Assessment., Victor A. Odozi Jun 1996

Nigeria's Domestic Public Debt Stock: An Assessment., Victor A. Odozi

Bullion

Since the early 1980s, Nigeria has taken steps to evolve external debt management strategies encompassing refinancing, restructuring, buyback, collateralisation and debt conversion arrangements as well as issuing external borrowing guidelines. Although the county's external debt problem remains severe, judging both by the absolute level of the debt stock and the unsustainable trend of the various debt servicing ratios, such as debt stock/GDP, debt stock/exports and debt service/export earnings, it is generally acknowledged that the Government had made concerted efforts to address the problem. However, the domestic debt has not been given the same attention, if any at all. the domestic …

Diversification And Promotion Of Exports Of Nigeria's Energy Products., M. O. Ojo Jun 1996

Diversification And Promotion Of Exports Of Nigeria's Energy Products., M. O. Ojo

Fiscal Federalism: Revenue Allocation For Economic Development In Nigeria., T. O. Okunrounmu

Bullion

From colonial administration to independence in 1960 and 35 years of self-rule, revenue allocation in the Federal Republic of Nigeria has had a chequered history. It has been subject of intensive lobbying by politicians in the attempt to have their wishes engrained in the Constitution. This paper is prepared in three parts. Part I is a theoretical overview of fiscal federalism while Part II reviews the Nigerian experience with Fiscal Federalism. Part III analyses proposals for an effective fiscal Federalism that would enhance economic development.

Mobilising Financial Resources For Growth: Nigeria's Financial Policy Perspective., Felix U. Ezeuduji Jun 1996

Mobilising Financial Resources For Growth: Nigeria's Financial Policy Perspective., Felix U. Ezeuduji

Bullion

Financial resources for growth are from several sources because no single source could provide the required funding. The major known sources of resources for growth are based to both the informal sector and formal sector activities which include the fiscal operations of the Government foreign sector transactions, capital market activities, and institutional savings mobilisation in the financial sector which is the focus of this paper. This paper is organised in five sections. The introduction constitutes Section One which provides the background, the objective and the organisation of the paper. In section Two, the conceptual framework of financial resource mobilisation is …

The Strategy And Financing Of Economic Recovery In Africa., Ubadigbo Okonkwo Jun 1996

The Strategy And Financing Of Economic Recovery In Africa., Ubadigbo Okonkwo

Bullion

The paper examines the impact of Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAP) on investment and growth in Africa and suggests the need for a new development paradigm. Working in partnership with the private sector, African Governments must establish a sound institutional and incentive framework for rapid growth. An alternative development strategy should be market-friendly and people-centred and must give priority to the accelerated expansion of exports and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). In view of the bleak prospects for external financing, Africa must rely on domestic financial institutions and capital markets to mobilise the required financial resources for economic recovery.

A Spanish Translation Of The Spiritual Well-Being Scale: Preliminary Validation, Kay Colleen Bruce Jun 1996

A Spanish Translation Of The Spiritual Well-Being Scale: Preliminary Validation, Kay Colleen Bruce

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Recent attention has focused on the need for effective mental health services to minority populations in the United States. The Hispanic community is the second largest minority in the U.S. and continues to grow rapidly. Mental health services may be facilitated by translation and validation of assessment instruments which are psychometrically sound and easy to administer. Measures of subjective well-being were developed in the United States in the 1970s. An interest in spiritual well-being, as related to one's general sense of health and well-being, led to development of the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS) by Paloutzian & Ellison (1982). Since that …

The Relationships Among Expectancy, Hypnotizability, And Treatment Outcome Associated With Eye Movement Desensitization In The Treatment Of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Lisa Kimberly Largo-Marsh

Dissertations

A pre-test, post-test comparison group design was utilized to assess the effectiveness of two interventions on symptoms associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of two treatments: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) or structured writing sessions. A standardized diagnostic interview was used to screen subjects and provide diagnosis and symptom profile at intake and one-month follow-up. Standardized self-report measures were used to assess treatment outcomes. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed no significant differences between the two treatments. Both treatments were effective in significantly reducing post-traumatic symptoms at post-test and follow-up, although slightly different patterns were evident. …
