Foreign Direct Investment In Eastern Europe: Applying Traditional Models Of Fdi To The Transitional Countries Of Eastern Europe, Jonathan Austin Kerr

An empirical analysis is used to determine whether the factors that normally explain FDI flows to developing countries are also suitable to explain FDI flows to the developing countries of Eastern Europe for the years 1988-1992. It was found that a typical set of explanatory variables which explain FDI flows to non Eastern Europe developing countries very well, is not a useful set of determinants for FDI flows to Eastern Europe. Conclusions are drawn concerning the extent to which these results reflect the current state of political and economic transition taking place in Eastern Europe.

Only within the last ten to fifteen thousand years have alternative forms of social organization developed, duly labeled by anthropologists and archaeologists: agricultural, pastoral, and complex state societies, lineal tribes, and a host of other terms which pass in and out of favor in our ongoing (and inescapably human) attempts to categorize our own kind.

Visual Learning In The Perception Of Texture: Simple And Contingent Aftereffects Of Texture Density, Frank H. Durgin, D. R. Proffitt

Novel results elucidating the magnitude, binocularity and retinotopicity of aftereffects of visual texture density adaptation are reported as is a new contingent aftereffect of texture density which suggests that the perception of visual texture density is quite malleable. Texture aftereffects contingent upon orientation, color and temporal sequence are discussed. A fourth effect is demonstrated in which auditory contingencies are shown to produce a different kind of visual distortion. The merits and limitations of error-correction and classical conditioning theories of contingent adaptation are reviewed. This article seeks to contribute to the search for a distinctive "Oikos of Community and Ecology Perspective" by providing an overview of the main theoretical debates in Development Studies. "Development Studies" here is understood in the name sense of the social science "subdiscipline" that emerged to grapple with the phenomenon of the "new nations" and the problem of "underdevelopment" after the Second World War. For purposes of simplification, these diverse and complex debates shall be classified under two broad theoretical traditions: "Liberal" and "Marxist." Assimilation into the mainstream culture has been studied extensively. The degree of assimilation, ethnic identity, and cultural awareness varies for the first, second, and third generations of an ethnic group. In order to test these assumptions a study was conducted at the campus of Humboldt State University. Using Marcus Lee Hansen's third generation hypothesis of "what the [child] wishes to forget, the grand[child] wishes to remember", as a theoretical framework and Milton Gordon's schema of assimilation, a questionnaire was devised and administered. The sample was composed of 25 Latino males and 25 Latina females of various ages and class standings. …

In a traditional hierarchical library, librarians often must leave the institution to move up the career ladder The library loses an experienced librarian and must also invest a substantial amount of time and money to train a new employee.

The author argues that libraries should attempt to retain experienced librarians by creating continuously challenging career paths with equivalent rewards. He proposes a new type of position—that of executive librarian—that would include increasingly individualized job content, a voice in institutional decision making, and optional administrative responsibilities.

This report summarizes the proceedings of a meeting on essential obstetric care (EOC) convened by the Population Council on behalf of the Inter-Agency Group for Safe Motherhood (IAG). This technical meeting was held to clarify the definition of EOC, bridge the gap between research and program planning, and stimulate field-level activity. The president of the Population Council closed and summarized the meeting by noting that the IAG is making progress, but that work remains to be done. Progress will begin to occur more rapidly when we are able to prove that lives have been saved and to state definitively that …
