Family Preservation: An Outcome Study, Jeff Chandler

Although Family Preservation (FPS) programs have been intensely scrutinized and better evaluated than many other social service programs, more exploration will be required under the demands of managed care. This study examines program outcomes from a FPS program at Edgewood Children's Center in St. Louis, MO. These outcomes included the degree of positive change in family functioning and its' relationship to out-of-home placement, client satisfaction with services and the manner in which they were delivered, and the cost effectiveness of Family Preservation compared to foster care and residential treatment in Missouri. Health promotion and disease prevention has made a major impact in the United States in the past 20 years. However in terms of disease and risk behavior minority groups in this country are not uniformly disadvantaged. African - Americans had age - adjusted mortality rates well above the rates of white Americans, whereas Hispanic Americans have rates that are comparable to white Americans. Asians and Pacific Islanders and American Indians and Alaska Natives have mortality rates lower than white Americans.

This paper discusses inequality among the elderly in health care services and programs. The minority elderly should have equal access to quality health care and services. The literature identifies several factors relative to health care and service utilization for the elderly. Tables and graphs are provided to show the disparities that exist between minority groups and non-minority groups. Findings of a survey are provided to illustrate the need for better access to health care services and program information for all the elderly.

An Examination Of A Juvenile Rehabilitation Model: Effects Of Length Of Stay On Depression, Anxiety, And Self-Esteem Scores, Joseph B. Worth

This paper is an investigation of the relationship between length of stay in a Missouri based juvenile rehabilitation program on self-esteem, anxiety, and depression levels. A critical analysis of studies that support the fostering or purging of these variables as beneficial toward the rehabilitation process will be conducted.

The results of the research indicate no significant correlations between length of stay and self-esteem scores on the Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventory. Furthermore, scores on the Depression and Anxiety in Youth Sub-Scale (DAYS) yielded no correlations with length of stay within the program. A Chi-square procedure found length of stay and scores …

This paper discusses the career of Henry Evelyn Bliss, founder of the Bibliographic Classification, which is currently being revised. Dissatisfied with the current classification systems, Bliss devised his own, which was based on a main class order that provided for collocation of related classes. Although not currently used in the United States, the Bibliographic Classification continues to be utilized by approximately 50 libraries in the United Kingdom. At the University of Pittsburgh, Generations Together, an Intergenerational Studies Program develops programs that bring young and old together in ways that benefit both generations. The University Challenge for Excellence Program (DCEP) works with entering students who are often first generation, mostly African-American, and who may be in need of special assistance during their first year. In a (first price) all-pay auction, bidders simultaneously submit bids for an item. All players forfeit their bids, and the high bidder receives the item. This auction is widely used in economics to model rent seeking, R&D races, political contests, and job promotion tournaments. We fully characterize equilibrium for this class of games, and show that the set of equilibria is much larger than has been recognized in the literature. When there are more than two players, for instance, we show that even when the auction is symmetric there exists a continuum of asymmetric equilibria. Communication departments generally choose between a public speaking and a hybrid course of their basic course. Previous research has shown that students' perceptions of their communication competencies increase after completing a hybrid course (Ford & Wolvin, 1992, 1993). After noting similarities between public speaking and hybrid courses, this study examines students' perceptions of their competencies after completing a public a speaking course.

Results indicated that students' perceptions of their competencies changed significantly in class, work, and social contacts in such areas as public speaking, interpersonal and group communication, interviewing, listening, and self-confidence. The largest gains were in perceptions of their …

Domestic violence effects 1.8 million women a year in the United States. Despite the magnitude of the problem, the issue is largely unaddressed by the mental health community. Therapists' values, which significantly impact the therapeutic interaction, have not been scrutinized as to their impact on female victims of domestic abuse. Furthermore, four widely accepted therapeutic orientations (psychodynamic, behavioral, humanistic, and family systems) have historically promoted values which fail to provide a framework for understanding healthy female development, the experiences of women in general, and the experience of women who have endured domestic violence in particular.
