Niccolò Machiavelli—Adviser Of Princes, Philip J. Kain Mar 1995

Niccolò Machiavelli—Adviser Of Princes, Philip J. Kain

Philosophy

In Plato's Republic, Socrates argued that true artisans work not in their own interest but for the good of that upon which they practice their art. So the true ruler is one who works for the good of the city or the citizens, not the ruler's own self-interest.2 Many would hold, with Leo Strauss, that Machiavelli contends the very opposite - that for him the true prince ruthlessly seeks self-interest and personal power.3 I think this is too simple a reading of Machiavelli.

I do not want to argue that Machiavelli is not a Machiavellian - that he …

The Anchor, Volume 108.17: March 1, 1995, Hope College

The Anchor: 1995

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Exploring The Impact Of Funding Source On The Provision Of Family Preservation Services, Debora L. Heider

Theses and Graduate Projects

In an effort to contain costs and increase accessibility to health care coverage, Minnesota has begun to transfer medical assistance recipients into Health Maintenance Organizations. This research project explores this change in funding and its impact on the provision of family preservation services. This project focuses on the characteristics of family preservation programs, their effectiveness at teaching families the skills needed to stay together, and the limited mental health care coverage provided under group health plans and its impact on service utilization. Twenty-three family therapists and mental health practitioners, along with three program administrators representing three family preservation programs in …

Farm And Station Stay : An Alternative Industry, Not A Hobby!, Garry Palmer

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

When product prices are low, or after bad seasons, it is tempting to look for a fix. But farm and station tourism is not that short-term fix. Before going into such ventures, landholders need to examine all other alternatives that might be available on their properties. GARRY PALMER'S advice could save a lot of heartache for prospective hosts.

Analyzing Correlations Of Three Types In Selected Lines Of Drosophila Melanogaster That Have Evolved Stable Extreme Geotactic Performance, Scott F. Stoltenberg, Jerry Hirsch, Stewart H. Berlocher

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The behavior-genetic analysis of Drosophila melanogaster with geotactic performance as the phenotype is an ideal model system with which to investigate the complex relations between heredity and behavior. As part of a long-term, 38-year study, we report 4 experiments that identify and analyze trait correlations in the selected high- and low-geotaxis lines. We performed F2 correlational analyses and backcrosses to examine 3 types of correlations: (a) genotype-genotype (alcohol dehydrogenase [Adh]-amylase [Amy]), (b) genotype-phenotype (Adh and Amy-geotaxis), and (c) phenotype-phenotype (mate preference–geotaxis). Only the Adh-geotaxis correlation survived meiosis and reappeared in the F …

The Conduct Of Monetary And Banking Policies By The Central Bank Of Nigeria, V. A. Odozi Mar 1995

The Conduct Of Monetary And Banking Policies By The Central Bank Of Nigeria, V. A. Odozi

Economic and Financial Review

Monetary and banking policies are usually the responsibilities of the Monetary Authorities which comprise the Central Bank and the Central Government. In Nigeria, while the Central Bank exercises primary responsibilities for initiating, articulating, implementing and appraising such policies, the Bank's proposals are subject to the approval of the Federal Government. To facilitate the understanding of the conduct of monetary and banking policies by the CBN, it is necessary to articulate the theoretical framework of monetary policy, the CBN-monetary management techniques, as well as the policy measures adopted since 1986 to reform and strengthen -the banking system.
