Impact Of Television Violence On Young Minds In An Urban Setting; An Introspective Study, Nirupama Sagar May 1995

Impact Of Television Violence On Young Minds In An Urban Setting; An Introspective Study, Nirupama Sagar

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An institution such as broadcasting affects and is affected by the society, which encompasses the viewers and listeners it serves. The increase in crime and violence and the fear of crime may actually help explain the popularity of TV violence. Media violence has been a topic of popular interest right from the fifties, when television was still being applauded as one more of those human marvels. Therefore, for my study, I will concentrate on television, a medium that involves both the visual and hearing senses and to which young people are particularly drawn. The sample for this study involved five …

A Case Study On Elective Mutism Using A Consultation Model, Nancy Reeves May 1995

A Case Study On Elective Mutism Using A Consultation Model, Nancy Reeves

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In the present case study, shaping/desensitization procedures, along with behavioral contracts, were implemented through a consultation model in an attempt to treat a seven year-old elective mute female within the school setting. The author (consultant) provided information to the subject's teacher (consultee) in order to treat the subject's elective mutism. The procedure consisted of trials using a sound-level meter to successively approximate the desired behavior of speaking at school. The goal was for the subject to respond verbally to questions and requests invoked by her teachers and peers within the school setting and to improve her social interactions. The results …

Social Factors Associated With Bulimia Nervosa In College Women, Harry Vogel May 1995

Social Factors Associated With Bulimia Nervosa In College Women, Harry Vogel

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this research was to examine the social dimensions of bulimia. Bulimia was viewed using the symbolic interactionist perspective. This perspective was used to see bulimia as a socially constructed line of action. A questionnaire was given to 426 female students at a mid-sized Southern university during the fall of 1994. Crosstabulations and a logistic regression were used to analyze the data. Results suggest that sorority membership, a belief in the importance of avoiding becoming overweight, a belief that one's relationships with men are dependent on being attractive, and low satisfaction with one's social life are related to …

Expansiontrends In Wisconsin Dairying: Evidence From The 1994 Atffi Dairy Farmer Poll, B. Barham, F. Buttel, J. Mcnichol, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, S. Wood May 1995

Expansiontrends In Wisconsin Dairying: Evidence From The 1994 Atffi Dairy Farmer Poll, B. Barham, F. Buttel, J. Mcnichol, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, S. Wood

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

For several years there have been growing concerns about the long-run decline of farm incomes and the future viability of the dairy industry in Wisconsin. These problems are sometimes attributed to declining milk prices, and indeed the average milk price per hundredweight received by Wisconsin farmers has declined by over 40 percent since 1980 when inflation is taken into account. But there is now little optimism that the long-term decline of milk prices can be reversed. There is virtually no chance that the 1995 Farm Bill will raise the federal support price for milk products, and if anything there may …

Assessing Crime Victim Satisfaction With Probation Services, Janet L. Isaacson May 1995

Assessing Crime Victim Satisfaction With Probation Services, Janet L. Isaacson

Theses and Graduate Projects

The field of Community Corrections has been mainly focused on identifying the needs and wants of the offender and the safety of the community. As the voices of crime victims are getting louder in the criminal justice system, probation departments are evaluating how to improve response to victim needs. A new framework that is being implemented in Community Corrections to meet those needs is a model called Restorative Justice. This model incorporates services to the offender, the victim, and the community.

A pilot project which offered specific victim services was developed out of the restorative justice concept through the Community …

Regionalizing Government In Maine: Opportunities For The Future, David Alexander, Alan Baldwin, John Carroll, Elizabeth Chapman, Dorraine Diebold, Lisa Harvey Mcpherson, Daniel Stevenson, Earlene Wilson

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

In keeping with his promise to make government work better for the people of Maine, Governor Angus King commissioned the Task Force on Regional Options for Better Government. The Governor charged the task force with recommending some alternative regional arrangements for the delivery of government services currently provided by state or local government. The task force evaluated three services in which regionalism offered some advantages: economic development; demand response transportation; and municipal management information systems.

A Psychometric Evaluation Of Five Commonly Used Measures Of Family Functioning And How They Correlate With Development Of Children With Disabilities, Matthew J. Taylor May 1995

A Psychometric Evaluation Of Five Commonly Used Measures Of Family Functioning And How They Correlate With Development Of Children With Disabilities, Matthew J. Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In response to the increased emphasis in early intervention on assessing family functioning, there has been substantial effort over the past 15 years to develop instruments that can measure important aspects of family functioning with families of children with disabilities. While the multitude of recently developed family measures has given researchers and clinicians a variety of instruments from which to choose, research on the quality of the data derived from these instruments has lagged behind. Considering the importance of family functioning in current early intervention programs and the potential impact on the type of intervention delivered, further investigation of the …

A Meta-Analytic Review Of Studies Examining The Effects Of Childhood Sexual Abuse In Women, Sheryl A. Dagang May 1995

A Meta-Analytic Review Of Studies Examining The Effects Of Childhood Sexual Abuse In Women, Sheryl A. Dagang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Childhood sexual abuse is a prevalent problem that impacts adult women and the mental health professionals who treat them. Decades of studies have been conducted examining the impact of childhood sexual abuse in order to be better able to treat clients with this history. Yet, few clear guidelines have resulted from these activities.

In order to gain a clearer picture of this research, a meta-analysis was conducted on 41 published studies to describe the nature of the problem, the subjects involved in these studies, the measures used to determine effect, and the impact of eight variables that potentially mediate the …

Gender And Depression: Analysis Of The Effects Of Sex Roles, Sex-Role Self-Discrepancy, And Attributional Style, Scott V. Cutler May 1995

Gender And Depression: Analysis Of The Effects Of Sex Roles, Sex-Role Self-Discrepancy, And Attributional Style, Scott V. Cutler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of attributional style, sex roles, and sex-role self-discrepancy in the relationship between gender and depression. Epidemiological studies report a higher incidence of depression among women then men (approximately 2:1). Among the various theories suggested to explain this gender difference, sex roles, attributional style, and self-discrepancy have been conceived as possible explanations. The relationship between gender and depression may be better understood through examining the possible contribution of these three independent variables.

To examine these theories, a sample of 130 subjects was drawn from clients at the USU Counseling Center, the …

Cross-Generational Similarities Between Mothers' And Daughters' Abnormal Eating Behaviors, Kimberly K. Bushman May 1995

Cross-Generational Similarities Between Mothers' And Daughters' Abnormal Eating Behaviors, Kimberly K. Bushman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was an investigation of the similarities and differences between mothers' and daughters' self-reported eating and dieting behavior. Also investigated was actual eating behaviors of mothers and daughters after consuming a milk shake preload presented as containing the caloric equivalents of one average meal.

Thirty-five mothers and their sixth-grade daughters completed a series of self-report instruments including the Bulimia Test-Revised, the Revised Dietary Restraint Scale, and the Anorexia-Bulimia Inventory. Subjects then individually completed a contrived ice cream taste test, which involved consuming a milk shake preload prior to tasting vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream. The relationship between mothers' …

Crisis Of Infertility: Effects Of Length Of Treatment On Emotional And Marital Adjustment, Christie L. Markestad May 1995

Crisis Of Infertility: Effects Of Length Of Treatment On Emotional And Marital Adjustment, Christie L. Markestad

Graduate Theses

Twenty infertile couples participated in the present study to investigate whether infertile couples receiving medical treatment experience changes in their emotional, marital and sexual adjustment as a result of the length of time they have been in treatment. The couples were divided into three groups based on how long they had been seeking medical attention for infertility. The instruments administered were: SCL-90-R (Symptom Checklist), Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) and Index of Sexual Satisfaction (ISS). It was predicted couples who were in the initial stages of treatment would experience increased levels of emotional, marital and sexual distress, however those levels would …

Martial Adjustment Among Nontraditional Graduate Students, Virginia Siegfried May 1995

Martial Adjustment Among Nontraditional Graduate Students, Virginia Siegfried

Graduate Theses

This study used a pretest-posttest design to examine the marital adjustment of 108 nontraditional graduate students as-compared with 42 adults in the general population. Participants' scores on the Dyadic Adjustment Scale showed no significant differences between the two groups, contrary to the study hypothesis. It was also hypothesized that the marital adjustment of graduate students would be better at the beginning of the semester term rather than at the end of the term, and that male graduate students would have a higher level of marital adjustment than female graduate students. Neither of these hypotheses were supported by the data. Overall, …

How Should We Measure Sustainable Income?, William D. Nordhaus May 1995

How Should We Measure Sustainable Income?, William D. Nordhaus

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Growing concerns about long-run economic growth have led to calls for measures of “sustainable income.” Traditional analyses rely on Hicksian income, which is consumption plus net investment. The present paper shows that Hicksian income corresponds to sustainable income only under implausibly limited circumstances. We define sustainable income and estimate its magnitude for the United States. The analysis and empirical estimates indicate, first, that consumption has historically been far below sustainable income; second, that conventional Hicksian measures of national income are poor proxies for sustainable income; and, third, that the true savings rate has declined significantly in the last two decades.

Mortgage Default Risk And Real Estate Prices: The Use Of Index-Based Futures And Options In Real Estate, Robert J. Shiller, Karl E. Case, Allan N. Weiss May 1995

Mortgage Default Risk And Real Estate Prices: The Use Of Index-Based Futures And Options In Real Estate, Robert J. Shiller, Karl E. Case, Allan N. Weiss

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Evidence is shown, using US foreclosure data by state 1975-93, that periods of high default rates on home mortgages strongly tend to follow real estate price declines or interruptions in real estate price increase. The relation between price decline and foreclosure rates is modelled using a distributed lag. Using this model, holders of residential mortgage portfolios could hedge some of the risk of default by taking positions in futures or options markets for residential real estate prices, were such markets to be established.

Banks Versus Bonds: A Simple Theory Of Comparative Financial Institutions, Sandeep Baliga, Ben Polak May 1995

Banks Versus Bonds: A Simple Theory Of Comparative Financial Institutions, Sandeep Baliga, Ben Polak

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We use a simple, graphical moral hazard model to compare monitored bank lending versus non-monitored bond issues as sources of external funds for industry. We contrast the conditions that theoretically favor each system, such as the size and number of firms, with conditions prevailing when these financial systems were developed during the British and German Industrial Revolutions. Then, to address the question why different systems have persisted, we embed the model in an entry game in which firm size and number are endogenous. We show that multiple equilibria can exist if financiers take the industrial structure as given and vice …

World Income Components: Measuring And Exploiting International Risk Sharing Opportunities, Robert J. Shiller, Stefano G. Athanasoulis May 1995

World Income Components: Measuring And Exploiting International Risk Sharing Opportunities, Robert J. Shiller, Stefano G. Athanasoulis

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We provide a method for decomposing the variance of world national income (present values) into components in such a way as to indicate the most important risk-sharing opportunities among nations of the world. We identify risk-sharing opportunities in terms of eigenvectors of a variance matrix of deviations of the present value of country incomes from their respective shares (adjusted for population and risk aversion) of world income. The method is applied to data on national incomes of six large countries 1870-1992 (Maddison [1995]): Canada, France, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom and United States. The method reveals that, assuming symmetric risk aversions, …

A Strategic Market Game With Secured Lending, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth May 1995

A Strategic Market Game With Secured Lending, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study stationary Markov equilibria for strategic, competitive games, in a market-economy model with one non-durable commodity, fiat money, borrowing/lending through a central bank or a money market, and a continuum of agents. These use fiat money in order to offset random fluctuations in their endowments of the commodity, are not allowed to borrow more than they can pay back (secured lending), and maximize expected discounted utility from consumption of the commodity. Their aggregate optimal actions determine dynamically prices and/or interest rates for borrowing and lending, in each period of play. In equilibrium, random fluctuations in endowment- and wealth-levels offset …

The "Unstinted Effort" Of Social Comparison : Biases In The Retrieval Of Behavior Among Depressives And Nondepressives, Michele Christine Fejfar May 1995

The "Unstinted Effort" Of Social Comparison : Biases In The Retrieval Of Behavior Among Depressives And Nondepressives, Michele Christine Fejfar

Master's Theses

The egocentric bias, peoples' tendency to view themselves as better than others, has been found to exist in many different domains (Messick, Bloom, Boldizar, & Samuelson, 1985). Fejfar, Proudfoot, Allison, and Beggan (1994) uncovered evidence supporting two components to the bias: the motivation to be egocentric and the construction of strategies to fulfill this motivation. In the present research, this model was used to determine the biases inherent in depressive (as opposed to nondepressive) cognitions by having subjects list good and bad behaviors performed by themselves and others. Subjects directly or indirectly compared themselves to others (to test the motivation …

The Hormones Of Pregnancy Alter Somal Size In The Medial Preoptic Area Of The Rat Brain, Lori A. Keyser May 1995

The Hormones Of Pregnancy Alter Somal Size In The Medial Preoptic Area Of The Rat Brain, Lori A. Keyser

Master's Theses

Formerly non-responsive females will display maternal behavior (MB) following pregnancy and parturition. The behavioral alterations are believed to occur in response to hormonal changes that accompany pregnancy. The medical pre optic area (MPOA) regulates hormone-induced MB. The current study examined neuronal changes which might account for the modified behavior. Twenty adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned a hormone condition: ovariectomized (OVX), ovariectomized/hormone-treated (P+E2), intact diestrus (DI), or pregnant (PREG). Animals were killed, and their brains fixed in Golgi-Cox solution. Somata of the MPOA and related cortex were measured in each group using a Bioquant imaging system. Pregnant females …
