Big Game, Big Bucks: The Alarming Growth Of The American Trophy Hunting Industry, Teresa Telecky, Doris Lin
Big-Game and Trophy Hunting Collection
The trophy hunting of exotic animals by American big game hunters is increasing at an alarming rate. Over 45,000 foreign animals were killed and imported to the U.S. by American trophy hunters in 1993, a 71% increase in only a four-year period. Among the imported trophies are thousands of threatened and endangered species, as well as species listed under CITES. The number of endangered and threatened species killed and imported by American trophy hunters increased by 83% in the same period. Three factors have contributed to the rising numbers of animals killed and imported by American trophy hunters: 1) The …

Factors Affecting Post-Crp Land Use Intentions In The Northern Plains, Larry Janssen, Tecleberhan Ghebremicael
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Post-CRP land use intentions of Conservation Reserve Program contract holders in South Dakota are examined. Results from logistic regression models indicate CRP crop base acres, farm commodity and conservation program provisions, and livestock/hay management are major factors affecting post-CRP land use plans.

The Commons And The New Age Of Laissez Faire, Roger A. Lohmann
The Commons And The New Age Of Laissez Faire, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The one thing new laissez faire rhetoric seldom does is find any
place for broader visions of civil society, and in particular,
nonprofit organizations, voluntary action, or philanthropy which
have been such important parts of the American past.
Laissez faire visions of the future being promoted today
are dangerously limited in at least one important respect: They
omit any reference to nonprofit organizations, voluntary action or
philanthropy (along with sustaining reference groups like family
and support and friendship groups) as operative parts of the
future. Instead, they offer an altogether familiar bi-polar social
universe from the past composed of “the …

Collection And Utilization Of Child Abuse Statistics In American Indian Communities, Michelle Chino
Collection And Utilization Of Child Abuse Statistics In American Indian Communities, Michelle Chino
School of Public Health Faculty Research
Public health research in American Indian communities involves many complex issues that may both help and hinder the development of an effective research methodology and the collection, analysis, and utilization of data. These issues include: 1) the unique strengths and diversity of Indian cultures; 2) the complicated relationships that exist between federal, state, and tribal agencies; 3) the vast distances between communities and services that exist in rural areas; 4) extremely limited human and financial resources; 5) overlapping and often conflicting legal and jurisdictional authorities; and 6) an array of social issues including poverty, substance abuse, modernization, and assimilation. Defining …

Economic And Environmental Contributions Of Wetlands In Agricultural Landscapes, Larry Janssen, Diane Rickerl, Eric Stebbins, Tom Machacek
Economic And Environmental Contributions Of Wetlands In Agricultural Landscapes, Larry Janssen, Diane Rickerl, Eric Stebbins, Tom Machacek
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
The purpose of this project was to determine key environmental and economic relationships between agricultural practices and wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of eastern South Dakota. Water quality and water quantity variables were the key environmental parameters examined. Economic cost and returns by farm management system and wetland proximity were the key economic parameters. The three farm management systems examined were conventional (CON) transitional no-till (TNT), and organic (ORG). The TNT and CON management systems used synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. The ORG system used no synthetic fertilizers and generally no chemical pesticides. The ORG system had greater …
