In developing countries such as Guatemala, firewood is increasingly being used for cooking in most rural areas. Consequently, there is a shortage of firewood in these areas beca use trees do not grow at the same rate as they are consumed. Some authors report that 90% of the heat from firewood is lost during combustion. Several alternatives to open pit fires exist to reduce the amount of firewood used. However, these alternatives need to be evaluated to determine their efficiency. Statistics and neural networks are analytical methods used to learn about observed experience. Both the statistician and neural network researcher develop and analyze data sets, draw relevant conclusions, and validate the conclusions. They also share in the challenge of creating accurate predictions of future events with noisy data.

Both analytical methods are investigated. This is accomplished by examining the veridicality of both with real system data. The real system used in this project is a database of 400 years of historical military combat. The relationships among the variables represented in this database are recognized as being hypercomplex and nonlinear.

Perceptions And Expectations Of Rural And Urban Public School Principals Toward School Library Media Centers, Patricia Morin

The focus of this study is the perceptions and expectations of rural and urban public school principals toward school library media specialists and library programs. Both elementary and secondary principals in a three county area of Northwestern Illinois were targeted.

All 41 public school principals in Carroll, Jo Davies, and Stephenson counties were sent survey instruments containing 23 opinion statements taken from the "Guidelines for School Library Media Program Development," "Guidelines for Fulfilling Roles and Responsibilities," and "Guidelines for Facilities," in Information Power. Principals were instructed to choose I of 5 alternative opinions ranging from (essential) to (undesirable).

This collection contains documents and correspondence by John Seeley of New Jersey, and Jonathan Taylor of the 24th Ohio Infantry, Co. D. Jonathan Taylor materials include discharge papers from June 1864 and a letter to his sisters and brother in Chattanooga, Tennessee from March 1864 discussing camp life. John Seeley materials include an envelope to Mrs. Charles Seeley (his mother) in Bridgeton, New Jersey, as well as two letters, both to his mother. The letters, from March 1862 and December 23rd of an unknown year, cover camp life, including Christmas, religion, and daily events among other topics.

Why is reducing water pollution from agriculture such a stubbornly slow process? Despite several policy initiatives since the 1970s, farms and ranches rank as the primary contributors to impairments of the nation's surface waters [U.S.EPA, 1994b]. Emerging research also points to agricultural chemicals in many cases of groundwater contamination [Barbash and Resek; Mueller, et al.]. After a little reflection, the industry's negative distinction may not be surprising. Covering nearly half the U.S. land base, crop and livestock production inevitably alter natural vegetative cover, apply fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation water, and involve animal wastes. A number of the complex onset clusters allowed in Quiegolani Zapotec do not follow the Sonority Sequencing Generalization (Greenberg 1978, Selkirk 1984, etc). The distribution of the laryngeal features likewise does not follow the Laryngeal Constraint (Lombardi 1991, 1995a). These recalcitrant facts are analyzed here via a combination of language-specific rules and universal constraints ordered within a constraint hierarchy, which operates within a derivational phonology.

"X-Net" is a computer simulation that I developed in conjunction with Network Exchange Theory. Users of X-Net can explore the effects of different network structures, rules of exchange, and negotiators' strategies on the dynamics and outcomes of resource exchanges in social networks. This article recounts the process of X-Net's development, in addition to key substantive, theoretical, and design issues that motivated its form and content. It concludes with a discussion of the relationship between theory, simulation, and empirical tests.

Certain political anention to rising health care costs in a climate of governmental cutbacks makes reallocation of health care resources nearly inevitable. One reallocation proposal periodically mentioned is to withhold Iife-extending treaonent based on age. Age-based rationing raises ethical dilemmas of distributive justice, equity, inctividual autonomy, and self-detennination. More equitable approaches include reforming the current health care system, increasing research dollars toward age-related diseases, and reorienting aging policies to coincide with current "old age" by raising the entry age for Medicare.

Yet, very little is known about the characteristics and attributes of women in the executive level of the federal services. Most of the studies are undertaken to examine how women are different from the established male standards, or have used different models or variables to explain the slow career advancement of the women.

KIM PAFFENROTH examines the Judas of the written Gospels and explicates Bach's sensitive musical portrayal of Judas in the recitatives and arias of the "St. Matthew Passion." A graduate student in Theology at the University of Notre Dame, Paffenroth has published articles on the death of Judas, St. Augustine's idea of friendship, and on Romans.
