State Anxiety Factors With Road Race Competitors, Walter Clayton Davis

The purpose of this study was to examine any significant relationships between a variety of factors and state anxiety using road race athletes. The factors examined were age, years of racing, expectations, finishing place, and accuracy of expected finish. Sixty eight subjects completed the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2), an instrument that measures cognitive state anxiety, somatic state anxiety, and self confidence in a sports setting. Results indicate no significant relationships of gender, distance raced, and accuracy of pre-race expectations with CSAI-2 scores of the runners. Cognitive state anxiety was found to correlate to pre-race expectations (-.27). Self confidence correlated …

Relationship Among Adolescent Reports Of Social Anxiety, Anxiety, And Depressive Symptoms, Heidi M. Inderbitzen, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present study examines the relationship among self-reported symptoms of social anxiety, anxiety, and depression in the context of Clark and Watson’s tripartite theory of anxiety and depression for a sample of adolescents. Four hundred and twenty-eight 10th-grade students completed three measures: the Social Anxiety Scale for Children–Revised, the Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale, and the Children’s Depression Inventory. Results suggest that symptoms of social anxiety are distinct from symptoms of depression and unspecified anxiety. In addition, results indicate that in comparison to males, adolescent females report higher levels of social anxiety, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Conceptual and methodological implications …

An Opportunity Lost: The Failure Of The Michigan Commission On Death And Dying, Joseph Ellin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The Michigan Commission on Death and Dying was created to advise the state legislature on the politically volatile question of assisted suicide. Proposals were considered to allow assisted suicide with safeguards, and to continue the state's temporary absolute ban. Because of the political composition of the Commission, however, no consensus was reached, and the opportunity to enact humane but careful legislation seems to have passed. This paper examines the proposals the Commission considered, the alliances reflected in the voting, and some problems the Commission failed to address.

Constructing An Ecology Of Foster Care: An Analysis Of The Entry And Exit Patterns Of Foster Homes, Lorna F. Hurl, David J. Tucker

This paper aims to illustrate the viability of using concepts and theoretical arguments from organization ecology to analyze dynamic change processes in foster care. The general topic is the relationship between foster homes and their environments. The specific focus is the effects of the environment on the entry and exit patterns of new foster homes. Drawing on our earlier studies of the 23 year history of a population of foster homes, various hypotheses shown to have validity in accounting for the processes underlying the founding and disbanding offormal organizations, also apply in the case of the entry and exit processes …

This research effort was a qualitative study on the current process of how the DOD provides humanitarian assistance. Currently the process is not well defined and is situation dependent. Historical documents and current guidelines, policies, and regulations were researched for information on what types of humanitarian assistance the DOD provides, how the process is initiated, and who is involved in the process. Agencies outside of the military, both civilian and government, were researched to determine the extent of coordination necessary for the military to provide humanitarian assistance. Slow Motion: Economic Mobility Of Young Workers In The 1970s And 1980s, Greg J. Duncan, Johanne Boisjoly, Timothy M. Smeeding

This paper investigates the question of how long it takes young male workers to earn enough to reach a given standard of living, e.g., enough to support a family. We use the Panel Study of Income Dynamics data on the earnings of children and their parents to answer these questions. Our findings are that all groups of men, classified by race, ethnicity, and education level, are taking longer to reach a given standard of living. Some, e.g., undereducated black males, will never reach middle class standards of living for themselves. Implications for household formation, marriage, and public policy are discussed …

Modern Psychological Studies

Past research has demonstrated that Nmethyl- D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonists disrupt the acquisition of a variety of spatial and non-spatial tasks. In the present investigation, the effects of the NMDA antagonist, ketamine, were examined in a task with minimal spatial demands. Twenty-six male Long-Evans rats, approximately 5 months of age at the beginning of training, served as the subjects. Before training began, all rats were reduced to 85% of their free feeding weight and maintained with this 15% reduction throughout training. After injections of ketamine or saline, rats were trained to respond in a runway to a nonmonotonic serial pattern …

The United States has used security assistance training in Latin America as an element of foreign policy. This study determines intentions and results of security assistance training in Latin America and analyzes training statistics to evaluate its use as an instrument of foreign policy. This study also assesses the contribution of defense schools where Latin Americans receive security assistance training in their native Spanish language. The overriding purpose behind this research is to determine if security assistance training was intended to be a Cold War instrument of foreign policy or if it is an instrument of a more enduring nature. …
