Family Assessment

In this section a more unified research effort in family assessment is advocated by Dr. Halverson. He urges the constructs most important in the study of families be identified by shifting from the study of isolated components of the family to a more global view of family functioning. There is a lack of attention to the nomological net of constructs. Multi-trait and multi-method analysis is recommended to produce useful information regarding the family.

In 1983, Catherine MacKinnon, introduced a new and innovative legal approach to the proliferating problem of pornography. Citing that the current court standard of judging sexually explicit material, obscenity doctrine, did not adequatley address women's issues, MacKinnon devised a city ordinance that would provide a legal definition of pornography concentrating on women's concerns. Ultimately, the civil ordinance would provide a means for women to present the injurious harms done to them by pornography and to seek a remedy in an open court of law. The Concern for Improvement Survey was developed to serve as a measuring device for organizations, corporate and educational alike. It can be used as a benchmark as well as to measure an organization's progress in their journey towards quality. It was developed from W. Edwards Deming's "Fourteen Points for the Transformation of Management." Initial indications of reliability were obtained by a test of internal consistency of the scales. The resulting alpha levels ranged from .7979 to .8274. Construct validity was supported by consistent factor analyses, and correlations that imply appropriate relationships between the CIS and LABS surveys, without indicating that …

The United Nations is based on the principle of collective security-- nations banding together to protect each other from aggression, both from within the group of nations and from the outside. However, the standard operating procedures of collective security, as embodied by the UN, is unable to meet the changing needs of the international community. This is due in part to the shift in the global power structure and the Security Council's lack of accurate geo-political representation. If the UN expects to continue its efforts to maintain international peace and security, the Security Council's composition must change.

The purpose of this study was to measure the ethical climate of a major Army Reserve Command (ARCOU). This is a significant study in light of the recent changes the Army Reserve, and the military in greneral , has been reguired to make. The study looks to determine whether or not changes such as downsizing, unit inactivations and cutbacks in personnel and funding have influenced the ethical climate of the organization. The Integrity Audit Survey was the instrument used in the study. Nine subordinate companies of 382 soldiers were surveyed. The results were measured against the six factors of the …

The hierarchically structured Wisconsin lndianhead Technical College, New Richmond, Wisconsin, is considering implementing Total Quality Management/Continuous lmprovement Process (TQM/CIP) districtwide. The purpose of this study was to determine opinions held by faculty and management employed by that district regarding what constitutes effective leadership methods/styles and to assess whether differences existed between faculty and management groups regarding these opinions. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to all full-time district faculty and management. Two-hundred fourteen questionnaires were distributed, and 1 54 were returned for a return rate of 71 .9 percent. The questionnaire included 24 semantic differentiated items on a seven-point scale, …

This special issue of the journal on the theme of "Ethnicity: Global Perspectives" results from papers presented at the National Association for Ethnic Studies' 22nd annual conference held in March 1994 at Kansas City, Missouri. For the first time the Association's national conference was held in conjunction with the annual conference of another organization, the Central States Anthropological Society. Under the able guidance of conference co-organizers, Harriet and Marty Ottenheimer, the meeting was an outstanding success both in attendance and active participation. When cities grew large enough to develop slums, gangs began to form. The heritage of gang behavior is poverty and its children: abuse, alcoholism, and drug addiction, to name a few. Today we are facing a problem of major proportions in our cities. Gang membership is seemingly growing with no end in sight, and a beleaguered nation, a struggling city, the mother of a gang member all ask: Why? This study assesses from a North American Sephardic (Spanish-Jewish) perspective, the ambiguous relationships among Jews, "people of color," and definitions of "whiteness" in order to re-evaluate multicultural education in the United States. My intent is not to polarize multiple cultural identities but to illuminate and clarify differences in Jewish histories, identities, and cultures. The assumption that all Jews are and can pass as white, and therefore "have privilege," denies the complexities of racism, anti-Semitism, whiteness, assimilation, and multiculturalism.
