Toward Collaboration And Community In Student-Faculty Relationships, Mary V. Compton, Patricia L. Bailey

Central to support services for deaf and hard-of-hearing college students is the creation of processes through which deaf students and hearing faculty recognize and respect each other’s cultural values. This article describes how conversations from a focus group of deaf students and conversations from a focus group of hearing faculty reflect cross-cultural relatedness and community within a traditional liberal arts university. Higgins’ (1980) conceptualization of interdependence and Palmer’s (1987) notions of relatedness and community served as the framework by which the conversations were analyzed. A Historical Perspective On Psychology And Deafness, Mccay Vernon

Seven major dimensions of psychology and deafness are examined historically. These are School Psychology, medical hospital inpatient services, child treatment facilities, substance abuse programs, outpatient mental health services, pastoral counseling and psycholinguistics. Implications are then drawn from past events in these psychological areas and related to future trends in psychological testing, obtaining mental health services, deaf professionals, the deaf underclass, professional identity, and School Psychology services.

A Postmodern Perspective On The Issue Of Deafness As Culture Versus Pathology, Mary T. Wochar Torres

There is a growing controversy within the field of mental health and deafness over the understanding of deafness as a cultural identifier versus as a pathological condition. Meanwhile the development of postmodern ways of thinking about therapy in general offers a constructive paradigm from which to discuss this issue. Accordingly the author examines the meaning of deafness from a postmodern perspective as well as some implications of this view for therapy involving hearing therapists and deaf clients. She concludes that linguistic and cultural sensitivity on the part of the therapist is paramount in importance when the goal of therapy is …

The research described here falls into two categories. The first category focuses on outcome, the secondary category focuses on process. The overview includes 27 studies, 14 in the first category and 13 In the second category. Mainstreamed students seem to be more prepared for postsecondary education. Some studies do not rank communication skills when entering the college as among the most important for college performance and the decision to withdraw, and some do. A few studies indicate no correlation between academic performance and the decision to stay or withdraw. Many of the studies support the idea that this interaction is …

Modern Psychological Studies

Research has shown that stigmatized subjects, defined as members of groups about which others hold negative attitudes, receiving negative feedback from a prejudiced evaluator attribute the nature of the feedback to the source rather than to their own performance. The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether this self-protective mechanism also occurs in nonstigmatized individuals. Sixty-seven subjects, male and female undergraduate students enrolled at a small midwestern liberal arts college, participated in a 2 x 2 between-subjects factorial design in which the independent variable of evaluator prejudice or nonprejudice was crossed with stigmatized or nonstigmatized subject status. Modern Psychological Studies

The issues under investigation were gender differences in either content or memory discrimination of dating scripts and general examination for differences in memory of typical and atypical events using the script pointer plus tag (SP+T) hypothesis. A total of 52 female and 54 male undergraduates participated. Subjects were enrolled in introductory psychology classes at a large midwest university and were primarily Caucasian, single, and between the ages of 18-21 years. In Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the study, items that would possibly occur in 4 different dating scenarios were generated and then rated for typicality. Males and females both …

Recent investigations have begun to elucidate the function of dendritic arbors, revealing that the geometry of dendrites and the presence of dendritic spines play important roles in both simulated and actual dendritic function (Midtgaard, 1994). The present study attempts to correlate dendritic complexity with cortical function under the assumption that connectivity in a local cortical area may determine its more holistic functional properties. Two human brains (ages: 23 and 69 years) were used for the present study. Major changes in the geopolitical environment and the social and economic needs of the United States have resulted in resources being shifted away from national defense. Although the expected decrease in defense spending should not be harmful in macroeconomic terms, it can be devastating locally. To mitigate the effects of the drawdown, individual states and local communities must search for ways to bolster their local economies.
