Intergenerational Service Topic Bibliography, Robin Vue Benson, Robert D. Shumer
Bibliographies
This topic bibliography is produced in response to numerous requests from service and education practitioners for information on intergenerational issues and programs. Additional records have been added in this most recent revision. The primary source for the below citations and annotations is the Eduational Resources Information Center's (ERIC) database of Resources In Education and Current Index to Journals in Education. This material is supplemented by references from a draft bibliography by Generations United as well as some resources abstracted by the National Information Center for Service-Learning. Records from each source are indicated by ERIC, GU, and NICSL, respectively, following the …

Impacts And Effects Of Service Topic Bibliography, Robin Vue Benson, Robert D. Shumer, Madeleine S. Hengel
Bibliographies
Many claims have been made about the impact of service-learning on participants, programs and communities. From positive influences on psychological, social and intellectual development to effects on alienation, attitudes and social behavior, service-learning has been mentioned as a method of achieving these outcomes. Additional reviews of the literature in areas related to civic participation and general engagement in the public, political process indicate that service-learning can have an affect on the civic development of youth.
On the other hand, some studies have indicated service-learning does not always have the desired outcomes. As Dan Conrad points out in his review of …

A New Look At Heath-Care Reform, Murray L. Weidenbaum
A New Look At Heath-Care Reform, Murray L. Weidenbaum
Murray Weidenbaum Publications
The time is ripe for taking a new look at health-care reform. Between a free market and a governmental approach, the operation of market forces often proceeds more rapidly and more effectively in responding to serious problems than do the more ponderous decision-making mechanisms of the public sector. Indeed, often the reduction of governmental impediments to competition represents the most efficient and least costly solution. Medical care is no exception.

The Multiplier Effect: Singapore's Hospitality Industry, Habibullah Khan, Sock-Yong Phang, Rex S. Toh
Research Collection School Of Economics
Tourism's contribution to Singapore's economy has increased over time. Tourism contributed 11.9% to Singapore's GDP in 1992, about half of that from direct revenues. Indirect and induced sources contributed about equally to the other half. While the direct effect of tourist expenditures on the Singapore economy are predominant, the indirect and induced effects are also significant, indicating strong sectoral linkages within the local economy, especially with respect to the hospitality industry.
Substantive Due Process And Parental Corporal Punishment: Democracy And The Excluded Child, Mary Kate Kearney
Substantive Due Process And Parental Corporal Punishment: Democracy And The Excluded Child, Mary Kate Kearney
San Diego Law Review
This Article questions whether parents have a right to corporally punish their children, and if they do, how this right should be defined. The author argues that parents should not receive the heightened constitutional protection conferred by a fundamental right. She argues that the political process already adequately protects the interests of parents in disciplining their children. To the extent that the political process chooses to permit parents to administer reasonable corporal punishment, this Article proposes a five-part test that courts can use to determine whether an act of corporal punishment fits within that reasonableness standard. This test is more …

Harris V. Forklift Systems, Inc. Victory Or Defeat?, Laura Hoffman Roppe
San Diego Law Review
This Casenote analyzes the significance and potential effects of the decision in Harris v. Forklift Systems, Inc., a Supreme Court case decided in November 1993. This case promulgates a framework for analysis of "hostile environment" sexual harassment claims arising under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The author sets forth the historical backdrop of the case, as well as exploring and comparing the effect of the decision in general with the decision's effect in the Ninth Circuit in particular. The author concludes that the Harris case potentially reduces women's chances of winning sexual harassment claims in the …
