It was just a few short months ago that Pat Williams glibly assured the Orlando public that the signing of Horace Grant to a contract that clearly circumvented the NBA salary cap was not a problem. "We have very clever lawyers," said Williams, "at one glance they can tell the difference between an oral and a written contract." But could they tell the difference between a cap and a strap?

Tennis In Decline In The 90'S, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The U.S. Open Tennis Championships began its two-week run in New York on Monday. Most of the big names of the past two decades are gone. On the women's side Martina Navratolova is in semi-retirement, Monica Seles has never come back from the knifing of a year and a half ago, and earlier stars like Chris Everet and Billie Jean King are long since departed. On the men's side Jimmy Connors, the long-time mainstay of New York bad-manners-tennis has packed it in, while the great McEnroe-Connors, and McEnroe-Borg rivalries are history while Johnny Mac is now doing TV commentary.

For the Orlando Magic it looked like the biggest development since the signing of the Shaq. To be able to pick up Horace Grant as a free agent without giving up Dennis Scott on waivers, and only losing Scott Skiles and a first round pick in 1996 is truly amazing. Sports Are Different Here - An American In Europe During World Cup, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It's odd when you leave the United States and go off for a vacation and have very little contact with the sports scene for over three weeks. Baseball, which is a daily obsession nearly disappears from your life, with only an occasional glimpse at scores in the international Herald Tribune or USA Today, and a few highlights hear and there on CNN.

It has been a wild and crazy several weeks of sport while WUCF has been off the air to increase power, and over the next few weeks I will try to catch up on some of the notable action. The Stanley Cup and NBA Finals have concluded, the World Cup has moved to center stage, the Baseball All-Star game is approaching and so apparently is a strike, Wimbledon is approaching its climax, stories of corruption continue to flow off the college campuses in Tallahassee and Miami, Evander Hollifield has been cured of heart problems by an Orlando faith-healer, and O.J. …

Baseball's All-Star Game, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Baseball's All-Star Game is coming up on Tuesday in Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium, one of the old style cookie-cutter ballparks of the early 60's. Although the concept of an All-Star game dates back to 1858 and a game between all-star teams from Brooklyn and New York, it was sixty-one years ago that the first modern all-star game was held, July 6, 1933.

There were times when I thought I was watching the World Wrestling Federation. All that was missing was a gold lamay cape worn by Patrick Ewing, cowboy boots and stetson for Charles Oakley, or designer trunks with matching shoes for John Starks. As for Pat Riley he has always looked the part.
