Methodological Notes On The Study Of Political Culture, Paul Nesbitt-Larking

Data and Test Instruments

Defining political cultures as those discursive practices associated with the power-related facets of evolving human relations and social movements, the paper presents some methodological principles, inspired by the structurationist approach, to overcome existing impasses in political culture research. In general, it is argued that empirical research in political culture must integrate theoretical, ethical, and practical concerns. More specifically, the case is made for greater depth in the treatment of the individual and consciousness in the process of cultural production, for an extension of empirical investigations beyond the legal-institutional aspects of politics, for a more thorough exploration of the relationship between …

An exhibition entitled "The Age of the Marvelous,"1 sought to explain the fascination of sixteenth and seventeenth century European culture with the unusual, rare, and exotic-whether natural or man-made. Among the paintings, natural specimens, rare books, maps, and manuscripts were displayed illustrations of wondrous animals. One common characteristic of these illustrations, whether of mythical or freshly discovered animals from the New World, was that the creature illustrated was often depicted as made up of parts from several different animals.

Inelastic Supply: An Economic Approach To Simple Interval Schedule, James Dougan

Scholarship

Economic theory predicts an inverse relationship between the quantity of a commodity supplied to the marketplace and the equilibrium market price of that commodity. This prediction was tested in three experiments. Pigeons responded on simple variable-interval schedules, and quantity of reinforcement supplied was varied in a different way in each experiment. In Experiment 1, quantity supplied was varied by manipulating reinforcement rate while keeping session length constant. In Experiment 2, quantity supplied was varied by manipulating reinforcement rate while keeping reinforcers per session constant. The urban regime in Chicago was an integral player in the determination of sports policy during the 1980s and early 1 990s. As the mediator of every major sports issue, the regime orchestrated the policy response in innovative ways. Regulatory powers were used to control night baseball in Wrigleyville, ultimately appeasing the team owners and most neighborhood residents. Economic development policies were adapted to keep the White Sox, but these were adopted with a major regulatory component and the progressive regime also wove a major social benefit into the redevelopment of the ballpark neighborhood. Today women are held back, not by incompetence or inadequacies, but rather by the myths and social constructions surrounding them as women. The myths American society holds about sex and gender hinder women from obtaining equality in the workplace. Myths are very powerful tools. They allow a society, or in this case an organization, to justify its past and present actions and to predict its future behaviors. Our current understanding of citizenship is grounded in our culture of individualism and results in a flawed conception of the good citizen in a liberal democratic state. The culture of individualism presents a flawed view of the person, fails to recognize our interconnections and common problems, encourages only adversarial democracy, alters the nature of our democracy and fails to recognize the potentials of common action. For these reasons the culture of individualism destroys meaningful citizenship as it alienates us from one another and prevents us from recognizing a limited common good --the protection and enhancement of each individual's life opportunities. …

On August 2, 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait. As a statement of fact, Iraq's aggression and annexation of Kuwait was an infringement of the principle obligation of member states under the U.N. Charter. The purpose of this document is to clarify and focus U.S. foreign policy in regard to the case held against Iraq, describing the limitations under the U.N. Charter. It is the goal of this thesis to demonstrate that the resolution of the Gulf crisis was in violation to the U.N. Differential Toxicity Of Enantiomers Of Maackiain And Pisatin To Phytopathogenic Fungi, Leslie M. Delserone, David E. Matthews, Hans D. Vanetten

Enantiomers of the isoflavonoid phytoalexins maackiain and pisatin were tested for toxicity to 36 fungal isolates representing 19 species. Nine of these species were pathogens of red clover, which synthesizes (–)maackiain; seven species were reported to be pathogenic on garden pea, which synthesizes predominantly (+)pisatin and minor amounts of (–)maackiain. In general, non-host phytoalexins were more inhibitory than host phytoalexins to growth of these pathogens. In addition, the opposite enantiomer of the host phytoalexin was often more inhibitory to a pathogenic fungus than the normally-occurring enantiomer. There was little correlation between the tolerance of fungi to (+) versus (–)pisatin and …

The Distribution Of Amphipods In Southeastern Minnesota And Their Relation To Water Quality And Land Use, James A. Muck, Raymond M. Newman

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The distribution of the amphipods Gammarus pseudolimnaeus and Hyalella azteca was determined from 97 designated trout streams in Minnesota, along with temperature, conductivity, and nitrate levels. Streams were classified into 4 land use/geology groups. G. pseudolimnaeus was found in 11 counties and at 123 of 168 sites in 83 of the 97 streams sampled. Hyalella azteca was found in 7 counties at 26 sites m 21 streams. Spearman rank correlations showed a high degree of correlation between nitrate (range: 0-11 mg N/L), conductivity (range: 325-870 μS/cm), and geology. The relative abundance of G. pseudolimnaeus was negatively correlated with nitrate, geology …
