The efforts of 69 elementary school teachers to instruct children in cognitive processing activities were observed. Although the teaching of such activities was relatively infrequent, it varied by grade (occurring more often in grades 2-3 than in higher or lower grades) and by the content of instruction. Teachers of grade 4 and above more often provided rationales for the use of cognitive strategies than did teachers of younger children. In a second study, children of three achievement levels were selected from classrooms in which teachers varied in their use of suggestions regarding cognitive processes. Beilstein And Gmelin: Keep Or Cancel, Michael Knee

This article examines the decision-making process employed at an academic library to evaluate continuing commitments to two important reference sources in chemistry: Beilstein and Gmelin. A survey was used to ascertain regional subscribers for a potential resource-sharing agreement. A second survey was conducted to determine the status of the printed handbooks and usage of the online equivalents at institutions with similar chemistry departments. Results showed half of the surveyed libraries had standing orders for Beilstein and 35% had standing orders for Gmelin. Harold W. Beams, long time Professor of Biology at the University of Iowa, died at his home in Iowa City on January 26, 1992 after an illness of several months. Professor Bearns was born in Belle Plaine, Kansas on August 3, 1903. He received the B.A. Degree in 1925 from Wichita State University, the M.A. Degree in Zoology in 1926 from Northwestern University, and the Ph. D. Degree in Zoology in 1928 from the University of Wisconsin.

Husband and wife, parent and child, priest and penitent, supervisor and employee, the 'happy hour' regulars at the corner pub - almost all of us communicate interpersonally every day. Important decisions can depend on success or failure in carrying out this process. Ultimately, it probably is of far more practical importance than mass media communication.
