The Beads Of Roman And Post-Medieval Antwerpen, Belgium, Karlis Karklins, Tony Oost
The Beads Of Roman And Post-Medieval Antwerpen, Belgium, Karlis Karklins, Tony Oost
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Excavations conducted at several sites in Antwerpen, a principal city and seaport on the Schelde River in northern Belgium, have uncovered a small but significant collection of glass beads. These range from a decorated specimen of the Roman period to tubular square- and star-sectioned beads of the 16th-17th centuries. The Post-Medieval specimens, found in the cesspits of merchants' homes, give us an idea of what Antwerpen was exporting during the early part of this period.

On The Date Of The Copper Age In The United States, A. Morlot
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
During the mid-19th century, some scholars believed that the chevron beads found in early Indian graves had been brought to North America by globe-trotting Phoenicians or representatives of some other higher European civilization. A paper on the subject published in 1862 by one of the theory's proponents is reproduced here, along with contemporary descriptions and illustrations of the beads under discussion.
Identifying Beads Used In The 19th-Century Central East Africa Trade, Karlis Karklins
Identifying Beads Used In The 19th-Century Central East Africa Trade, Karlis Karklins
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
A wide variety of glass beads poured into Central East Africa during the second half of the 19th century as explorers, missionaries and others made their way into the uncharted interior. Each kind had a name and value that, much to the chagrin of the travelers and present-day researchers, varied from one region to another. This article synthesizes what historical documentation reveals about some of the more significant beads in the trade with an eye to identifying the actual beads that are represented.

Broad-Crested Weir Application On 15,000-Acre Farm, Stuart W. Styles
Broad-Crested Weir Application On 15,000-Acre Farm, Stuart W. Styles
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
Growers in California have been subjected to increasing pressure to account for water used on the farm due to limited water supplies and increasing energy costs. Water measurement capability provides for equitable distribution of assigned costs and enables effective water management to be accomplished. Broad-crested weirs are proven water measurement devices, especially when applied to on-farm applications. The broad-crested weirs and published data were developed by the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Phoenix, Arizona. This paper is a discussion of an application of these weirs.

Empirical Models Of Debt-Rescheduling With Sovereign Immunity, Robert B. Avery, Eric O'N. Fisher
Empirical Models Of Debt-Rescheduling With Sovereign Immunity, Robert B. Avery, Eric O'N. Fisher
Economics
The purpose of this chapter is to review the literature on empirical models of debt-rescheduling in international financial markets. The discussion focuses primarily on the statistical techniques that have been developed. These fall into two areas: discriminant-analysis and probabilistic-choice models. We also present other methods that might prove useful in future empirical research in this area. In particular, we discuss debt-rescheduling from the point of view of an explicitly dynamic economic analysis. This chapter is divided into three sections. In the first section, we review the applied literature on international debt-rescheduling. We focus primarily on empirical studies and give only …

Validity Of The Distinction Between Generalized Social Phobia And Avoidant Personality Disorder, James D. Herbert, Debra A. Hope, Alan S. Bellack
Validity Of The Distinction Between Generalized Social Phobia And Avoidant Personality Disorder, James D. Herbert, Debra A. Hope, Alan S. Bellack
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Disorders of pervasive social anxiety and inhibition are divided into 2 categories, generalized social phobia (GSP) and avoidant personality disorder (APD). We explored the discriminative validity of this categorization by examining the comorbidity of GSP and APD and by comparing these groups on anxiety level, social skills, dysfunctional cognitions, impairment in functioning, and presence of concurrent disorders. Results from 23 subjects showed high comorbidity of the 2 diagnoses: All subjects who met criteria for APD also met criteria for GSP. APD was associated with greater social anxiety, impairment in functioning, and comorbidity with other psychopathology, but no differences in social …
