In June of 1988 and 1989, The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted an archaeological field school at the northern end of the plaza in front of the Alamo in downtown San Antonio. The Center for Archaeological Research cooperated with the university in organizing and staffing this field school. Excavations were limited to specific areas related to the fortifications around the main entrance to the Alamo constructed in 1835 and demolished and backfilled less than a year afterward. These fortifications consisted of a lunette and related defensive trench around the main gate, a secondary trench parallel to the south …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

During early 1991, an archaeologist from The Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), monitored the expansion of the Casa Rio Restaurant in downtown San Antonio. The expansion exposed, but did not damage, the foundation of the first Beckmann home constructed in 1859. Research for the property also revealed that the basement and support structures for the second Beckmann home probably exist within the parking lot immediately to the south of the expanded facility. No further historical work is required for this project but any future modifIcation to the area must address the critical …

Integrating Psychodynamic, Cognitive, And Interpersonal Therapies: A Biophysical Role Theory, Tamara Ferguson, Jack Ferguson, Elliot D. Luby

Clinical Sociology Review

A biopsychosocial role theory has been developed to integrate the mam findings of psychodynamic, cognitive, and interpersonal therapies. To function in a society, you must achieve a balance between your self-expectations and your performances, and your expectations of others and their performances. These expectations of self and others fall roughly into 16 biopsychosocial areas, or life vectors Imbalance between expectations and performance creates stress. When experiencing stress, you must either modify and negotiate expectations and performances with others, or through defense mechanisms and patterns of reaction, further compound your problems. Interview schedules structured according to this theory have been used …

Using Sociology To End Chemical Dependency, J. Barry Gurdin Jan 1992

Using Sociology To End Chemical Dependency, J. Barry Gurdin

Clinical Sociology Review

Drawing on participant observations and interventions while counseling 160 heroin addicts over a two-year period, the author explores the possibilities and limitations of using sociology to counter his clients' addictions to heroin and other drugs. Important historical changes have brought about new conflicting viewpoints within the methadone maintenance clinic, where acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatments are now available alongside Western medicine Although sociologists have written harsh accounts of "getting the treatment," they have tended to support methadone maintenance, which has been demonstrated to stem crime and HIV, among other socially beneficial ends. Clinical sociologists can resocialize addicts to mentally-healthful social …

An Alternative Understanding Of The Cognitive, Emotional, And Behavioral Characteristics Of Individuals Raised In Alcoholic Homes: A Clinical Theory Of The Individual, John E. Glass Jan 1992

An Alternative Understanding Of The Cognitive, Emotional, And Behavioral Characteristics Of Individuals Raised In Alcoholic Homes: A Clinical Theory Of The Individual, John E. Glass

Clinical Sociology Review

Historically, clinical sociology has assessed problematic, individual behavior as reflective of immediate social circumstance and situation. As such, practitioners have primarily targeted situational factors contributing to individual distress as areas of intervention. The following paper, however, views problematic, individual behavior as having social origins, yet targets strategies for intervention not at the interpersonal level, but at the intra-personal level—"within" the individual. The logic behind this argument is found in traditional, well-established sociological theory. An analysis of individuals raised in alcoholic homes will be used to demonstrate this perspective.

Intervention Among Children Of Subastance Abusers And School Success, Marguerite E. Bryan

A modified version of the student assistance services model was used. Specifically, this study examined the impact of the independent variable—the number of limes the student participated in the counseling program, on the dependent variables of …

Australian Academic Legal Information Centres: Issues For The Law Library Of 2001, Elizabeth Naumczyk Jan 1992

Australian Academic Legal Information Centres: Issues For The Law Library Of 2001, Elizabeth Naumczyk

Research Collection Library

By the year 2001, Australian academic law libraries will face different challenges than those of today, especially as an increase in library users and a growth in the volume of legal literature can be confidently predicted. The question is to identify these challenges and to define ways to deal with them. Already, academic libraries with limited and decreasing funds, and under-resourced law schools in Australia, are having difficulty coping with the costs of running law libraries in their present form. A central issue will be the availability of funds to cope with given changes, including how to redirect these funds …

Elder-Caregiving Among University Employees: Responsibilities And Needs, Constance L. Coogle, Edward F. Ansello Jan 1992

Elder-Caregiving Among University Employees: Responsibilities And Needs, Constance L. Coogle, Edward F. Ansello

Virginia Center on Aging Publications

Although many institutions of higher education often house the researchers who study eldercare, few have documented the need for information and services among their estimated 460,000 employees who face the difficult task of effectively balancing work and eldercare responsibilities. Even fewer have established programs to address this need.

Drs. Constance Coogle and Edward Ansello have recently completed an exhaustive survey of VCU employees (N = 11,430) to determine the extent to which they provide care to disabled parents or spouses.[1] A longer, more detailed survey was sent to those who indicated that they were eldercaregivers to measure their perceived …
