The Punctator's World: A Discursion (Part Seven), Gwen G. Robinson Apr 1992

The Punctator's World: A Discursion (Part Seven), Gwen G. Robinson

The Courier

Though eighteenth-century grammarians had brought light to the profundities of our subject, their erudition and philosophical remove more often than not disqualified their ideas for popular application. Nineteenth-century scholars were a more practical breed. Their goal was to preserve the integrity of English in afar-flung and diversifying Empire. A standardized language was imperative for perspicuity in communication: for the lingua communis ofpoets and philosophers, as well asfor commerce, science, mass education, and government. In the drive for clarity and uniformity, discussions ofthe values ofthe stops and how they should be appliedformed apart of virtually every nineteenth-century grammar textbook.

The Death Of Camelot: Myth, Rhetoric, & The Kennedy Assassination Conspiracy Theory, Charles Herzog Apr 1992

The Death Of Camelot: Myth, Rhetoric, & The Kennedy Assassination Conspiracy Theory, Charles Herzog

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The nature of the popular allegation that President John F. Kennedy was the victim of a conspiracy is addressed in this thesis. An answer is sought to the question, "What qualities of the Kennedy assassination conspiracy theory account for its relatively widespread popular appeal?" The author seeks to demonstrate that the Kennedy conspiracy theory has attained the status of myth in contemporary culture. First, a theoretical framework based upon previous research in the area of myth and rhetoric is constructed. This framework is designed to aid the researcher in identifying mythic discourse by establishing both formal and functional criteria.

Comprehension Of Role Reversal In Chimpanzees: Evidence Of Empathy?, Daniel J. Povinelli, Kurt E. Nelson, Sarah T. Boysen

Sentience Collection

Four chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes, were individually trained to cooperate with a human partner on a task that allowed both participants to obtain food rewards. In each chimpanzee-human dyad, one of the participants (the informant) could see which pair of food trays on a four-choice apparatus was baited, but had no means of obtaining it. The other participant (the operator) could pull one of four handles to bring a pair of the trays within reach of both participants, but could not see which choice was correct. Two of the chimpanzees were initially trained as informants and adopted spontaneous gestures to indicate …
