An Alternative Theory Of Firm And Industry Dynamics, Richard Ericson, Ariel Pakes
An Alternative Theory Of Firm And Industry Dynamics, Richard Ericson, Ariel Pakes
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper provides a model of firm and industry dynamics that allows for entry, exit and firm-specific uncertainty generating variability in the fortunes of firms. It focuses on the impact of uncertainty arising from investment in research and exploration-type processes. It analyzes the behavior of individual firms exploring profit opportunities in an evolving marketplace and derives optimal policies, including exit, in this environment. Then it adds an entry process and aggregates the optimal behavior of all firms, including potential entrants, into a rational expectations, Markov perfect industry equilibrium, and proves ergodicity of the equilibrium process. Numerical examples are used to …

Exploring Archaic Settlement In The Midsouth: The Surface Archaeology Of Cannon And Cheek Bends Of The Duck River, Tennessee, Charles L. Hall
Exploring Archaic Settlement In The Midsouth: The Surface Archaeology Of Cannon And Cheek Bends Of The Duck River, Tennessee, Charles L. Hall
Doctoral Dissertations
During the late 1970s and early 1980s the Department of Anthropology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville conducted an inventory and assessment of archaeological resources potentially affected by the proposed Columbia Reservoir on the Duck River in Middle Tennessee. Two environmental subdivisions of the Nashville Basin were present in the reservoir area: the patchy Inner Basin and the more homogeneous Outer Basin. As the majority of the archaeological material found was referable to the Middle and Late Archaic Periods, the research design focused on an investigation of Archaic adaptation in this environmentally variable landscape.

Sow Preference For Farrowing-Crate Width, P. A. Phillips, David Fraser, B. K. Thompson
Sow Preference For Farrowing-Crate Width, P. A. Phillips, David Fraser, B. K. Thompson
Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
A preference-testing apparatus was designed to provide sows with continuous access to three farrowing crates of different widths. The crates radiated from a central hub area sufficiently large for sows to enter or leave any crate freely. In exp. 1, nine sows were offered crates of 450-, 600- and 750-mm width at standing height. In exp. 2, 12 sows were offered widths of 450, 750 and 1200 mm, the largest being of sufficient width for the sow to turn around. Video recording was used to determine sow position from 3 d before to 6 d after farrowing. In exp. 1, …

Five Year Cohort Study Of Homeless Families: A Joint Policy Research Venture, John J. Stretch, Larry W. Kreuger
Five Year Cohort Study Of Homeless Families: A Joint Policy Research Venture, John J. Stretch, Larry W. Kreuger
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Over the past ten years there have been significant investments in families uprooted by homelessness, but no data which clearly delineated what types of families had been helped, and how long help may have sustained them. Reported are preliminary data on 875 families who resided in a 60 day family shelter from 1983 through 1987. Field interviews in 1989 with 201 of those families provide data on residential history, employment, familial and demographic changes, service needs and additional homeless episodes. Policy questions focus on current residential stability and community reintegration.
Homelessness And The Low Income Housing Crisis, Cushing N. Dolbeare
Homelessness And The Low Income Housing Crisis, Cushing N. Dolbeare
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The cost of housing is beyond the means of a growing number of housholds. This "affordability gap" is the underlying cause of homelessness. Housing assistance to low income families is therefore a logical solution to the problem, in combination with other responses.

Georgian Worldview: Its Definition, History, And Influence On The Material World Of Thomas Jefferson, Madison Scott Shumate
Georgian Worldview: Its Definition, History, And Influence On The Material World Of Thomas Jefferson, Madison Scott Shumate
Masters Theses
The research of this thesis has been that of two directions. The first of these attempted to both define and expand that ideological concept known as the Georgian Worldview. By referencing the opinions of current authority and by examining the very origins of this concept's many attributes this thesis would suggest that the term "Georgian" encompasses far more than symmetry in architecture alone. With this said, however, it must yet be acknowledged that architecture, and particularly the balanced and refined Palladian examples of the eighteenth century, often represented the most clearly recognizable material manifestation of this particular pervasive mind set. …

Why Fiscal Policies Matter In African Countries, M. O. Ojo, T. O. Okunrounmu
Why Fiscal Policies Matter In African Countries, M. O. Ojo, T. O. Okunrounmu
Economic and Financial Review
The paper discusses the critical role of fiscal policy in developing African economies. While it is accepted that fiscal management is one of the important functions of a modern state, the nature of the fiscal management in a specific environment determines, to a large extent, the overall effect of such intervention. The Nigerian experience indicates a very narrow revenue base that could not withstand the weight of public expenditure and investment.
A Review Of Small-Scale Enterprises Credit Delivery Strategies In Nigeria, E. E. Inang, G. E. Ukpong
A Review Of Small-Scale Enterprises Credit Delivery Strategies In Nigeria, E. E. Inang, G. E. Ukpong
Economic and Financial Review
The paper reviews the crucial role of Small-Scale Enterprises [SSEs] in facilitating industrial development, some special advantages of existing credit schemes to small-scale enterprises, the peculiar handicaps which SSEs face, the most crucial being poor access to development finance, and highlights areas and ways in which credit guarantee and insurance schemes for SSEs could substantially contribute to their development and growth in Nigeria. Notable among the credit schemes and institutions reviewed are the Small-Scale Industries Credit Scheme (SSICS) introduced in 1971; the Nigerian Bank for Commerce and Industry (NBC!) established in 1978; the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank (NIDB); the Central …

Rediscovering The Asylum, Sharon M. Keigher
Rediscovering The Asylum, Sharon M. Keigher
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Spending a night at a typical big city shelter for the homeless has reminded the author of the massive and regimented environment in institutions that she had mistakenly believed no longer existed after the much acclaimed "deinstitutionalization" of America. St. Mary's is run by a religious order attempting to provide charitable care in a nondemanding environment. Many demands are made, however. The lack of privacy and respect for individuality inherent in institutional life tends to erode the "inmate's" very conception of self. It controls their activities, time, and choices, and thus creates barriers to exit. Providing "shelter" for the homeless …
Homeless Persons' Interest In Basic And Health Services: The Role Of Absolute, Relative, And Repressed Needs, Russell K. Schutt
Homeless Persons' Interest In Basic And Health Services: The Role Of Absolute, Relative, And Repressed Needs, Russell K. Schutt
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This study describes and explains the interest of homeless persons in housing, economic, and health-related services with intake interview data collected by a large urban shelter for single adults. Shelter guests were most interested in assistance with housing, job, and economic benefits, rather than health services. Three explanations of variation in service interests are identified: the "absolute needs" explanation expects service interests to vary directly with service needs, the "repressed needs" explanation expects service interests to vary inversely with alcoholism and mental illness, while the "relative needs" explanation expects interest in health-related services to be related to health needs, but …
Acting On Their Own Behalf: Affiliation And Political Mobilization Among Homeless People, Marcia B. Cohen, David Wagner
Acting On Their Own Behalf: Affiliation And Political Mobilization Among Homeless People, Marcia B. Cohen, David Wagner
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Homeless people have been portrayed in the literature as passive, isolated, and unable to act on their own behalf. The authors discuss the findings of an ethnographic study of homeless activists which challenge the stereotypical view of homeless people as disaffiliated and disempowered. Collective social action was found to have a long term impact on access to material resources, development of social networks, and construction of positive homeless identity.

Book Review: Eisenhower And The Management Of Prosperity By John W. Sloan, Ann Mari May
Book Review: Eisenhower And The Management Of Prosperity By John W. Sloan, Ann Mari May
Economics Department Faculty Publications
Twenty-five years ago, Dwight Eisenhower was often depicted as a president with no great competence nor interest in economics or domestic policy issues. However, as those interested in presidential studies know, Eisenhower has been posthumously rehabilitated.
The revisionist literature on Eisenhower is now becoming complete, and John Sloan's book Eisenhower and the Management of Prosperity reflects this revisionism by examining economic policy formation in the 1950s. In Sloan's book, we see an Eisenhower who was not only competent in economics, but was also very aware of the political ramifications of economic policy. We also see in Eisenhower's leadership style a …
