Trevor Bain explores the industry restructurings that occurred in eight major steel-producing countries, including the U.S., Germany and Japan. He begins by categorizing each country as having either an adversarial or a cooperative industrial relations system, and then analyzes the differences in implementation strategies. He also determines who - employers, employees, or government - bore the cost of these adjustments and which industrial relations systems were more efficient in restructuring.

The Specific Surface Area Values For Iowa Tills, Keith E. Schilling, Brian L. Gedlinske

Specific surface area is a property used by earth scientists to estimate the proportion of expandable clay minerals in soils. In this study, specific surface area method is shown to compare favorably with standard clay mineralogical techniques in determining gross differences in expandable clay mineral content in tills. The results of over 100 measurements on till samples from Iowa indicate undifferentiated pre-Illinoian tills from southern and southwestern Iowa have the highest specific surface area values of Iowa tills (ranging from nearly 100 to greater than 150 m²/g) and Wisconsinan Dows Formation tills have the lowest average specific surface …

Mass Dependent Loss Of Resolution In Radially Inhomogeneous Exb Ion Traps, Mark A. Capron, Susan S. Haskin, Curtiss D. Hanson

ExB ion traps, such as Fourier transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance mass spectrometers (FY:ICR), mass analyze sample ions based on differences in their cyclotron frequencies in a homogeneous magnetic field. The high resolution mass measurements of FT-ICR are based on the relationship between the frequency of the cyclotron orbit and the mass-to-charge (m/q) ratio of an ion. Both the orbit and the frequency/mass relationship result from the radial forces on the ion. Ions trapped by inhomogeneous electric fields experience different magnitudes of the radial electric fields at different positions resulting in a positionally dependent frequency. "Our understanding of contemporary forms of electronically produced media knowledges has been informed by what we perceive as the changing role of the flaneur in the age of late capitalism-one that is as ominous and drastic as the changes which Benjamin perceived. We suggest that the flaneur no longer provides the service of teaching his or her generation about 'their own objective circumstances;' rather, we suggest that the flaneur, as global newscaster, has transmogrified into the afterimage of fascism."

Jens Peter Nelsen, was born November 28, 1889 and was married to Gertrude Elizabeth Nelsen on July 14, 1915. They had eight children. He worked on the home farm until the fall of 1911 when he took a job in Ringsted, Iowa, where he learned sheet-metal work. For some years he had his own business, but in the 1920s, as result of poor economic conditions, he took a job in Dennison, Iowa, for about a year. Timberlake, Gawley, and Lucas (1986) found that rats were unable to anticipate future resources (food) that were delayed by 16 minutes or more. The 15 minute period during which the rats were able to anticipate food which would be available in the future IS called the time horizon. The present experiment sought an explanation of the fact that the animals in the Timberlake et al (1986) study could not anticipate free food beyond 15 minutes and to also examine whether the time horizon of rats can be lengthened. In a study by Azrin et al. (1966), it was found that pigeons attacked other pigeons when the transition from a food reinforcement schedule to an extinction schedule was employed. These aggressive behaviors that appear due to the implementation of an extinction schedule, however, has not been widely studied in the laboratory rat. Examples of the types of phenomena that have been given attention with regard to laboratory rat aggression are male aggression in a mixed-sex colony toward male intruders, attack elicited by the application of aversive stimuli, and female-elicited aggression of male rats living in colonies. In the first experiment, 4 pigeons were each presented with a recurring sequence of four key colors followed by the delivery of grain (block clock). Once the rate of pecking had stabilized, three of the colors were replaced, during different series of sessions, by a darkening of the key. The rate of pecking was reduced within those segments of the interval between deliveries of food during which the key was dark; when the key was dark during the final portion of the interval, rates were reduced throughout the entire interval. Although learning disabilities (LD) are widely discussed in the literature, many aspects of the field remain ambiguous and confusing. The validity of research on LD is compromised by the use of discrepant definitions. These incompatible and often insufficient criteria also make it nearly impossible to draw generalizable conclusions from many studies. Further , there has been surprisingly little research done describing demographic characteristics of the LD population, with most of these studies focusing on children. Prior studies have indicated correlations between learning disabilities and such factors as handedness, gender, prior family history of the disorder and birth trauma. The present …

The purpose of this multi-year project is to conduct historical and archaeological research in the waterfront area of the three Georgetown area plantation sites – Richmond Hill, Laurel Hill and Wachesaw. This season of work was devoted to recording a large barge located in proximity to Laurel Hill. The primary goal was to document architectural features which would reflect the carpentry techniques used by the builders and the possible function of the vessel. This directory of surveys contains data on families and households in developing countries. The emphasis is on intergenerational linkages as well as conjugal ties and co-residential arrangements. Surveys that do not situate individuals within a family or household context are excluded. Thus, many labor force surveys with data on the employment status and earnings of men and women are not included unless they also collected data on respondents’ children and/or households. The same is true of contraceptive prevalence surveys that limit their attention to women’s reproductive behavior. The majority of surveys included in the directory are either household-based or woman-based. …

This volume continues a tradition initiated at the Population Council nearly 25 years ago when the first edition of “Population and Family Planning Programs” was issued. That factbook began a series of 12 editions produced through 1993. The data in that series were consolidated and updated in another publication, and the present volume is now issued, based partly upon a 1989 questionnaire inquiry to over 100 developing countries. A range of maternal and child survival data were added to the family planning information. The studies in this issue of Quality/Calidad/Qualité describe three efforts to involve women in the development of reproductive health care materials in different settings in the developing world. In Cairo, a women's health collective produced a comprehensive reference book for women; in Peru, a woman's group, with the extensive involvement of their nonliterate audience, developed a series of illustrated teaching materials; and in the South Pacific, an all-woman production crew produced three motivation and teaching videos developed in response to the expressed needs of Pacific Island women. Parasitological studies of archaeological sites can be used to interpret past behavior and living conditions. During the 1980s problem-oriented research into prehistoric- and historical-period parasitism developed and resulted in thefield of archaeoparasitology. Archaeoparasitology attempts to integrate parasite data into archaeological theory and interpretation. Within the last decade, four major archaeoparasitological laboratories emerged. They developed interpretive frameworks that apply parasitological data to a remarkable variety of prehistoric behaviors. Parasite remains can be used to reconstruct aspects of diet, health, and other behaviors such as transhumance and trade. The six flute duets of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-1784) are among the finest examples of this genre from the eighteenth century. That they are still not as well known as they deserve to be may stem partly from the problems with the editions that have been available until recently. The question of when these duets were composed has never been completely answered, largely because the sources present a confusing picture.
