The editors have done an outstanding job of bringing together essays by experts on the subjects related to "the massive changes since the contact of the Old and New World." One of the effects that a couple of the authors touch on and examine -- the gastronomic revolution -- was observed by German Aremiegas's America in Europe in 1975.

The Invention of Ethnicity is obviously and admittedly shaped after Hobsbawm's and Ranger's Invention of Tradition, published in 1986, when the essays in this volume were finished. In the meantime, much of what Sollors argues for in his editor's introduction has become accepted knowledge under the general heading of the constructedness of identity and subjectivity. The heritage of European colonization in the "New World" left a legacy of dualism for the contemporary nation-states of South, Central, and North America, according to Ringer and Lawless. As a major focus of their work, their "duality thesis" contends that European colonists constructed a society modeled in their racial, religious, and national image, resulting in the formation of a lasting colonial plural structure with a permanently established elite. Racial and ethnic groups emerged first as sojourner colonizers and then formalized their relationship with the establishment of colonies and the creation of racially segmented and subjugated societies. St. Clair Drake, the recently deceased anthropologist, has written an elaborate "summary essay" on the black experience as it relates to the continent of Africa. In his latter years at Stanford University, Drake was head of the University's Black Studies program. It appears obvious that Drake's consciousness was raised during this particular time span. The research and writing of this book is far different from his seminal work with Clayton (Black Metropolis, 1945). In his "emeritus" years, Drake decided to seek the high ground of an historical anthropological-philosopher and address certain issues that W.E.B. DuBois considered paramount to the study …

Public opinion research has changed dramatically in the last ten years in Poland, in terms of its methodology, scope, and role in political change. During the "first" Solidarity era (1980–81), the genie of public opinion was let out of the bottle, and even martial law could not entirely put it back. Public opinion polling in the 1980s became more sophisticated and more common, and began to tackle increasingly sensitive political issues. Public opinion came to play a role in the political process, and to give the Polish population a sense of its own purpose and values. It also revealed the …

A recent content analysis study shows that while leading educators in Massachusetts stress the importance of preparing teachers for an increasingly diverse world, most teacher preparation schools virtually ignore the issue of racial and ethnic diversity in catalogues recruiting new students. This not only discourages people from diverse backgrounds from becoming teachers, but could also create a lack of understanding in the classroom of the black, Latino, and Asian students being taught.

In Reflections of an Affirmative Action Baby, Stephen L. Carter, an Afro-American law professor at Yale University, has written a wide-ranging book on affirmative action policy. Like numerous other books on the subject, Carter covers the issues of its legitimacy as policy, white opposition, impact on black mobility, and contradictions faced by universities in administering affirmative action. Evidence of physical decline due in part to the rapid encroachment of commercial and industrial activity into some of Portland's residential areas in the mid-1960s and efforts to combat the forces of time and change through neighborhood revitalization provide the basis for this study. The Fairborn econometric income tax revenue forecasting model developed establishes a connection between conditions in the local, regional, and national economy and the variance of income tax collections. The model was designed to meet as many of the criteria stated in the Foster Group's Assessment as possible, while still holding to economic theory and econometric modeling procedures. In the model, variation in the predictor variables account for 97% of the variation in income tax collections. Several statistical tests were conducted on the model to insure efficient and unbiased results.

The Congressional Papers Roundtable of the Society of American Archivists was organized in 1984 and in recent years has maintained a membership of approximately one hundred individual members representing sixty-five federal and government repositories and private institutions, large, medium, and small in size. In 1990/91, the roundtable conducted a survey of its non-federal government members in order to determine the kinds of institutions that actively were collecting congressional papers and. the levels of processing that were currently being conducted. Thirty-nine percent of the roundtable members responded. The survey dealt specifically with post-World War II congressional papers. This cut-off period was …

Traditionally, appraisal decisions for a congressional collection have been made after the arrival of the collection at a repository. In this case, the collection was the papers of Senator John J. Williams of Delaware. Williams represented Delaware in the United States Senate from 1947 until 1970, and was known as "the Conscience of the Senate" for his honest pursuit of integrity in government while serving on both the finance and foreign relations committees. Processing the Williams papers was a dedicated two-year project. A project archivist was hired in 1988 and , shortly afterwards, a technician assistant. The project archivist made …

Fens are peatlands which are dependent on groundwater discharge to provide nutrient enrichment. Fens are found in a variety of landscape positions and in most Iowa landform regions. This paper presents a classification system for Iowa fens based on landscape position, stratigraphy, and hydrologic factors. Iowa fens can be separated into six categories: 1) fens along valley wall slopes; the groundwater source for these fens is sand and gravel buried between glacial tills (inter-till); 2) fens in hummocky topography on the northwestern margin of the Des Moines Lobe landform region; the water source is sand and gravel buried within glacial …
