Effects Of Labels On Recognition Memory For Ambiguous Visual Forms, Marvin Charles Mccallum Dec 1978

Effects Of Labels On Recognition Memory For Ambiguous Visual Forms, Marvin Charles Mccallum

Psychology ETDs

Memory for visual forms can be assessed in two separate ways. The most common approach is to assess the degree to which a form is accurately remembered. A less common approach is to assess the type and degree of change in form memory. The present experiment investigated the role of a single suggestive label in affecting both accuracy and qualitative change of recognition memory for ambiguous visual forms. Each of 240 subjects was briefly shown a single ambiguous form which represented the geometrical average of the anatomical characteristics of the two animal forms used to construct it. Just prior to …

The Motivation Of Self-Investment, Dan Nunley Dec 1978

The Motivation Of Self-Investment, Dan Nunley

Graduate Theses

A game of chance void of feedback was played by 36 adults to determine the motivational properties of various degrees of self-investment. The levels of self-investment were created by altering the extent to which subjects were involved in making one of the symbols used in the game. A practice trial was used to establish each subjects base score and a final trial to determine behavior changes induced by self-investment. The gains between trials yielded significant results (p<.01) due to subject participation in the experimental process.

Parental Perception Of The Neonate, Liza Ann Webb Dec 1978

Parental Perception Of The Neonate, Liza Ann Webb

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine maternal and paternal perceptions of the neonate. The Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was used to measure perception.

Thirty couples who delivered normal, healthy, first-born infants at a Naval Hospital in San Diego volunteered for the study. Consent forms were signed during the hospital stay and the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was administered to both parents in the homes when the infants were one month old.

Statistical analysis of data showed that mothers and fathers did rate their one-month-old infants as above the average infant using the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory. The range …

The Effect Of Order Of Presentation In A Two-Sided Communication Relevance Of Topic, & Receiver's Sex, Self-Esteem, & Dogmatism Upon Attitude Change & Recall, Earl Dulaney Jr. Dec 1978

The Effect Of Order Of Presentation In A Two-Sided Communication Relevance Of Topic, & Receiver's Sex, Self-Esteem, & Dogmatism Upon Attitude Change & Recall, Earl Dulaney Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Based on past findings in the area of order effects in persuasion, the purpose of this paper was to examine the effects of the receiver characteristics of sex, self-esteem, and dogmatism, message relevance, and order of presentation upon attitude change and recall. The study analyzed category differences and multivariate relationships. Interesting results were attained. Males high in esteem and dogmatism were not as easily persuaded as females high in esteem and dogmatiam. Females high in esteem responded with a significant primacy effect, while females low in esteem responded with a significant recency effect. Subjects low in dogmatism recalled more than …

We have made an absolute determination of the electron attachment coefficient η (cm-1) in helium containing 0.1-1% fluorine covering an E/N range from 3Td-17Td. At an estimated average energy of 5 eV we find a rate coefficient equal to (7.5±1.5) x10-10 cm3/sec.

The Ducks Nest Site: A Small Mississippian Site In Warren County, Tennessee, Gerald Wesley Kline Dec 1978

The Ducks Nest Site: A Small Mississippian Site In Warren County, Tennessee, Gerald Wesley Kline

Masters Theses

Archaeological investigations conducted at the Ducks Nest site (40WR4), situated on a ridge in the Barren Fork drainage in the Eastern Highland Rim of Middle Tennessee, resulted in the excavation of a small Mississippian component consisting of two superimposed wall trench structures and six features. These cultural remains and the artifacts and ecofacts recovered in association are described and discussed. It is concluded that the Ducks Nest site was occupied on a year round basis over a limited number of years during the first half of the twelfth century A.D. by a small social group that was trophically self-sufficient.

The Mississippian Component At The Eoff I Site, Normandy Reservoir, Coffee County, Tennessee, Lloyd Norris Chapman Dec 1978

The Mississippian Component At The Eoff I Site, Normandy Reservoir, Coffee County, Tennessee, Lloyd Norris Chapman

Masters Theses

Analysis of the Mississippian component features from the Eoff I site in the Normandy Reservoir, upper Duck River, Coffee County, Tennessee, has indicated that the component represents an Early ,Mississippian Banks phase occupation dating from between A.D. 1068 and A.D. 1170. The spatial distribution of features at the site along with the artifactual content of these features suggests that a major cluster of features was placed in consistent arrangement with each of two semisubterranean structures. A storage zone is possibly indicated by a cluster of features with morphological characteristics usually associated with storage facilities and also by the significantly larger …

The Effects Of Alcohol And Expectancy On Fantasy And Aggression In Male Social Drinkers, Michael R. Rodriguez Nov 1978

The Effects Of Alcohol And Expectancy On Fantasy And Aggression In Male Social Drinkers, Michael R. Rodriguez

Psychology ETDs

Research has indicated a complex relationship between alcohol and aggression involving personality as well as situational variables. Recently it has been found that expectancy of receiving alcohol has a more potent effect (on many behavioral measures including aggression) than does actual receipt of alcohol. In addition, alcohol has been found to increase power fantasies in males, leading many researchers to associate power fantasies with powerful actions such as aggression. The present study examined the effects of alcohol and expectancy upon aggression and power fantasies in male social drinkers. In the first phase of the study, 30 male college students over …

The Differential Effect Of Cognitive Style On Memory, Lee Tilford Davis Nov 1978

The Differential Effect Of Cognitive Style On Memory, Lee Tilford Davis

Psychology ETDs

Researchers and theoreticians have long assumed differences to exist in the attentional and learning processes between hysterical and obsessive-compulsive style individuals. This assumption of differences between the two cognitive styles has engendered limited research. Further, this research has utilized only the type of tasks employed in learning and memory experiments. The present study attempted to assess differences in the memories of hysterical and obsessive style individuals, moving from memory for word lists as assessed in previous research, to memory for information more typically utilized in a clinical situation.

Hysterical (Hy) and obsessive-compulsive (Pt) style subjects were obtained through the administration …
