The Relationship Between Spatial Design And Communication Patterns In Four Architecturally Different Elderly Housing Complexes, Suzanne L. Borgo

Communication ETDs

The purpose of this research was to isolate psychological, sociological and environmental variables which interact with proximity in determining friendship formation and communication behaviors for a particular subpopulation, the elderly. Subjects were residents of four architecturally different, low-income, elderly apartment complexes in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

A two-part questionnaire was distributed to the doorsteps of the 338 residents of the four apartment complexes. Part I of the questionnaire consisted of multiple-choice questions related to personal factors and participation in social activities. Part II of the questionnaire was a communication survey. Residents were asked to name five friends in the complex and …

Distraction And Dissonance: A Model Of The Persuasive Process, Davis Albert Foulger Jan 1977

Distraction And Dissonance: A Model Of The Persuasive Process, Davis Albert Foulger

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

After exploring the successes, failures, and conflicting explanations for results in two communications research traditions, distraction and counter-attitudinal advocacy, an attempt was made to explain these results in terms of a more comprehensive theory. Distractions were organized into classes defined by their strength and relevance to the message, demonstrating how these and other factors affected the persuasiveness of a message. On the basis of this theory an untested class of distractions, cognitive distractions, were hypothesized. This class of distraction, related to cognitive dissonance, was then used to integrate the conflicting research in counter-attitudinal advocacy. On the basis of this theory, …

A Series Of Dialogues For Foreign Students Who Have Just Arrived In The United States, Stephen B. Gelman Jan 1977

A Series Of Dialogues For Foreign Students Who Have Just Arrived In The United States, Stephen B. Gelman

MA TESOL Collection

From my experience with beginning or intermediate students who have just arrived in the States, I have found that they lack confidence in dealing with real situations outside the ESL classroom and in interacting with Americans because of their inability to speak or understand normal spoken English. They need some preparation and encouragement to ease the cultural shock they will encounter.

In this project, I have used a series of dialogues to prepare the students for the most common situations they will experience almost immediately, such as opening a checking account or eating in a restaurant. Another purpose of these …

Videotape Feedback And Its Effects On Two Communicational Modalities, John Joseph Benda Jan 1977

Videotape Feedback And Its Effects On Two Communicational Modalities, John Joseph Benda

Masters Theses

The present study was concerned with the applicability of various videotape feedback procedures on two communication modalities. The communication modalities studied dealt with the visual and auditory orientation of 80 college students.

The vast and, for the most part, positive findings associated with videotape feedback have fascinated therapists for the last couple of years. However, for the most part, videotape feedback has been used with individuals without taking into consideration the different ways these individuals communicate and/or learn. The purpose of the present experiment was to analyze the various aspects in which individuals communicate. Once their communicational modality was established …

Results are reported from interviews with seventeen gynecologists from the Portland metropolitan area in Oregon. Attempts were made to interview all female gynecologists in the area. Male gynecologists …

Effects Of Distance And Sex On Verbal Productivity And Anxiety, Peter Lindsay Rogers Jan 1977

Effects Of Distance And Sex On Verbal Productivity And Anxiety, Peter Lindsay Rogers

Masters Theses

The present study was designed to determine whether physical distance between male and female interviewees and a female interviewer affected verbal productivity and anxiety level when interviewees discussed academic, social, and personal topics. The interview was conceptualized as an information-gathering interview. Crucial variables in such interviews are client participation and information flow. Client verbal productivity appears to be directly related to these variables, and was used as one dependent variable to measure the impact of distance on interviewee verbal behavior. A self-report measure of anxiety, the Fear Thermometer was used as a second dependent variable.

The experimental distances used in …

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A medium-size newspaper in Central Florida was observed for 8 weeks in the Spring and Summer of 1976 and 58 employees interviewed to determine internal communication patterns and measure attitudes toward the communication system, organization and job related variables. A system theory of organizations provided basic theoretical assumptions. Since communication activities occur within the framework of internal organization elements such as structure, objectives, leadership style, reward system, technology, intergroup relations, and individual employee characteristics, those elements were described. Communication activities were reported in terms of message purpose, network traversed, method of diffusion and relationships. Findings indicated that the nature and …

Speech Library Series: Formulation And Utilization, Johnn Edward Malloy

Masters Theses

School District 205 has erased a large portion of their videotaped library on advice of the district lawyer. This field study is a three-pronged effort: (1) to conduct a survey among district faculty to discover the attitudes toward the usefulness of a series of ten videotaped programs depicting excellent speech communication models performing in three basic areas--acting, interpretation, and public address, (2) to produce these ten programs and add them to the library, and (3) to survey selected groups of students to aquire their reactions to the tapes.

The faculty survey shows that the programs would be of value for …
