An Economic Model For The Rio Grande Drainage Basin, New Mexico, James Fredric Roach Dec 1977

An Economic Model For The Rio Grande Drainage Basin, New Mexico, James Fredric Roach

Economics ETDs

Making the best use of the fully appropriated water supply in most areas of the Rio Grande Drainage Basin remains the major issue facing the state of New Mexico. This dissertation develops a comprehensive and integrative methodological approach capable of evaluating water resources problems in the Rio Grande Basin. A combination of two well-known and utilized economic tools (the input-output and linear programming techniques) served as the basis for model formulation.

The input-output technique was further extended into an interregional context, and served as the basis for the expanded and larger linear programming framework. One set of economic and three …

The Albuquerque Police Strike, Mark Alan Engelbrecht Dec 1977

The Albuquerque Police Strike, Mark Alan Engelbrecht

Economics ETDs

When representatives of the city of Albuquerque and the Albuquerque city police were unable to negotiate a new contract when the previous contract expired on June 30, 1975, the police officers engaged in a work slowdown by issuing less traffic citations. On Saturday, July 12, the officers on the third shift were told to end their slowdown. Instead, the officers on the third shift began a wildcat strike that afternoon. By Saturday night, 240 officers had joined the strike; that number soon grew to about 340 officers out of a total police department of 504. On the following Thursday, those …

Alcohol Consumption As A Function Of Applied Labels And Conception Of Alcoholism, Thomas Mitchell Boyd Dec 1977

Alcohol Consumption As A Function Of Applied Labels And Conception Of Alcoholism, Thomas Mitchell Boyd

Psychology ETDs

Much speculation but little experimental research has been directed toward the influence of the label "alcoholic" on drinking patterns. If, as has been theorized, attribution of behavior to a stable as opposed to an unstable determinant leads to maintenance of that behavior, then labeling drinking behavior as alcoholic, particularly among persons conceiving of alcoholism as a disease, may have a stabilizing influence on drinking behavior. Thirty-one subjects were first divided according to whether they regarded alcoholism as a "disease" or as a "bad habit." They were then randomly labeled as either "alcoholic or pre-alcoholic" or "social drinker," purportedly on the …

Differential Effects Of Praise Types, Ronald M. Kennedy Dec 1977

Differential Effects Of Praise Types, Ronald M. Kennedy

Student Work

Sixty-two male Caucasian undergraduate Psychology students were randomly divided into four treatment groups wherein they all performed an identical task under the direction of a "supervisor." The supervisor dispensed either non-evaluative verbal feedback, Structured Praise, Considerate Praise, or a combination of Structured and Considerate Praise to subjects in treatment conditions one through four respectively. Considerate praise is characterized as aperiodic, unlinked (to the giving of a formal performance appraisal), informal (not required by the "system"), spontaneous, generally unwritten, "from the heart" type praise while structured praise is essentially just the opposite.

The dependent variables of task quantity, task quality, task …

Developmental Changes In Cognition: An Evaluation Of A Philosophy For Children Program, Leendert Baggerman Dec 1977

Developmental Changes In Cognition: An Evaluation Of A Philosophy For Children Program, Leendert Baggerman

Student Work

The formal operational stage seems to differ considerably from earlier Piagetian stages. The first three Piagetian cognitive stages seem to develop fully in all individuals, unless there is a major cultural difference or a major psychopathology (Bruner, 1966). In contrast, there is disagreement in the literature as to whether formal operational reasoning fully develops in all normal individuals. Both Dulit (1972) and Tomlinson-Keasey (1972) found evidence that some normal individuals never attain formal operational reasoning. Others however (Jackson, 1965; Lovell, 1961) agree with Piaget (Inhelder and Piaget, 1958) that the emergence of formal operational reasoning occurs invariably between 11 and …

The Application Of Behavior Modification Techniques To Two Geriatric Patients, Beth A. Schneider Dec 1977

The Application Of Behavior Modification Techniques To Two Geriatric Patients, Beth A. Schneider

Student Dissertations & Theses

Behavior modification techniques were applied to the behavioral problems of two geriatric nursing home residents. For the first subject, providing reinforcement for a competing activity effectively reduced both disruptive behavior defined as requests for cigarettes, attacking a fellow resident or unauthorized removal of charts, and time spent in the hallway. Similarly, for the second subject, offering reinforcement for out-of-bed behavior had the desired effect of increasing time spent out of bed. However, positive changes in behavior failed to generalize beyond the experimental situation, possibly due to an inability to exercise adequate control over the environment. Suggestions for establishing a totally …

Emotion And Cognitive Perceptions In Response To Cinematographic And Non-Cinematographic Media, Stefani Nervig Dec 1977

Emotion And Cognitive Perceptions In Response To Cinematographic And Non-Cinematographic Media, Stefani Nervig

Psychology ETDs

While the controversy continues over the extent to which responsibility for increases in social violence and aggression can be attributed to television and motion pictures, the accumulated evidence leaves little doubt that these media have come to have a tremendous influence on individual and social behavior. Both survey and experimental evidence have shown the film media to be capable of changing attitudes and values and of stimulating imitation and the observational learning of social behavior (Liebert, 1972; Robinson, 1972). These effects are most prominent, it would appear, in children and adolescents, but they are found also in older age groups.

A History Of The Guam Public Library System 1947-1975, Mary Sue Caldwell Dec 1977

A History Of The Guam Public Library System 1947-1975, Mary Sue Caldwell

Dissertations

This historical study ascertained that, between the years of 1902 and 1941, there were libraries on Guam which served the local civilian population. Early library development on Guam (prior to 1947) did not seem to have followed the same pattern of development as libraries in the United States. This may have been due, in part, to the individuals responsible for the two library movements on Guam. The Guam Public Library System and its predecessors were established by individuals from the continental United States, where libraries had already undergone a developmental process. Thus, the library on Guam seems to have been …

Student Profiles And Factors Affecting Student Attrition And Persistence At The University Of Guam, Lorraine Constance Yamashita Dec 1977

Student Profiles And Factors Affecting Student Attrition And Persistence At The University Of Guam, Lorraine Constance Yamashita

Dissertations

The purposes of this study were to delineate several dimensions of the attrition problem at the University of Guam, to identify factors which were potentially contributory to the attrition problem and to provide information which could be used as a basis for institutional direction and planning.

Two subproblems were addressed in the study. The first subproblem was to develop a student profile, both academic and demographic, of those who withdrew and those who persisted. The second subproblem was to obtain and evaluate student views on attrition.

Two hypotheses were posited. The first hypothesis was that students who left the University …

Sexual Differences, Fluctuating Asymmetry And Their Implications In The Growth Rate And Developmental Stability Of The Permanent Dentition And The Primary Dermal Ridge Of The Fingers And Palms, Robert S. Webb Dec 1977

Sexual Differences, Fluctuating Asymmetry And Their Implications In The Growth Rate And Developmental Stability Of The Permanent Dentition And The Primary Dermal Ridge Of The Fingers And Palms, Robert S. Webb

Masters Theses

This study presents evidence that specific genetic material influences the growth rate and developmental stability of two genetic systems, dermal ridges and permanent dentition, having mutually exclusive developmental periods. Dermal ridges develop rapidly early in fetal life, while the permanent dentition develops slowly in a postnatal environment. Theories centering on the nature and effects of the specific genetic material (heterochromatin) are discussed and applied whenever possible.

The data for this investigation were collected from students in introductory anthropology classes at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The sample consists of fifty males and fifty females. Finger prints, palm prints and casts …

An Analysis Of The European Artifacts From Chota-Tanasee, An Eighteenth Century Overhill Cherokee Town, Robert Dolan Newman Dec 1977

An Analysis Of The European Artifacts From Chota-Tanasee, An Eighteenth Century Overhill Cherokee Town, Robert Dolan Newman

Masters Theses

Description and analysis of over 67,000 European artifacts and aboriginally modified European artifacts from Chota-Tanasee (40MR2-40MR62) provides a basis for future studies of similar European artifacts from Overhill Cherokee sites in the Little Tennessee Valley.

Dated European artifacts provided a means to construct a chronology of features and burials. Only 40 of 1086 features and two of 114 burials were dated to one of four periods of European economic and political influence. Thirty features and one burial date to the Colonial period corroborating accounts of Chota-Tanasee's size and importance during the mid-18th century. Too few features and burials date to …

An Analysis Of East Tennessee Dalton Projectile Points, Wayne D. Roberts Dec 1977

An Analysis Of East Tennessee Dalton Projectile Points, Wayne D. Roberts

Masters Theses

East Tennessee projectile points, previously described as the Early Woodland period Candy Creek type, are analyzed. Through the intensive examination of 17 continuous attributes and three discrete attributes reflecting morphology, function and manufacturing techniques, 112 of these East Tennessee projectile points are compared with 46 Dalton and Quad projectile points from northern Alabama and 37 Hardaway-Dalton projectile points from the Piedmont of North Carolina. As a result of the observations and a linear discriminant function program, it is determined that the Candy Creek projectile point is a regional variant of the Dalton projectile point type. Dalton manifestations described in the …

A Study Of The Effects Of Syllable Releasing And Arresting Function On The Correct Articulation Of /S/ By Normal And Articulatory Defective Children, John Carlton Pennington Dec 1977

A Study Of The Effects Of Syllable Releasing And Arresting Function On The Correct Articulation Of /S/ By Normal And Articulatory Defective Children, John Carlton Pennington

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was two-fold: (1) to investigate the effects of syllable releasing and arresting function on correct /s/ productions by normal and articulatory defective children; and (2) to investigate the effects of different phonetic environments on correct /s/ productions in syllable releasing and arresting positions by normal and articulatory defective children.

Two groups of five-year-old children, 15 with normal articulation and 15 with defective articulation, were selected as subjects in this study and met the following criteria: normal hearing, normal intelligence, no significant deviation in the structure and/or function of the oral mechanism, and no more than …
