Readership Of News About Politics In The Minneapolis Star And Tribune, 1950-1960, William L. Hathaway

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The management of the Minneapolis Star and Tribune, since World War II. has commissioned yearly studies of the newspapers' readers to learn how much attention was paid to the newspapers' content. An exploratory study was conducted of the data from the surveys made between 1950 and 1960 to measure the general levels of attention paid to news about politics, and to examine the variation of attention over time. Readers' preferences among several kinds of political news content were also noted.

Content And Form In Public Address : An Analysis Of The Relative Influences Of The Major Components Of Speech Upon The Listener, Karen Beatie Olson

A speech; whether prepared or impromptu, ought to be a communicative process. For a speech when defined as "discourse delivered to an audience,"(1) is a communicative process by which information may be given and received. Inherent in the phrase "given and received" is the assumption that the speaker anticipates that his listener will understand and respond, and that the speech will be understood as it was intended.

The difficulty present in this "intent - response" theory is the problem of insuring that the listener will understand enough to respond to what the speaker has said. In an effort to ensure …

In the last several years lists of theater organizations in California newspapers hare grown steadily. This writer asserts a need for study of active amateur and semiprofessional theater groups in California for gaining knowledge and understanding of cultural activities taking place about the Western United States. Such material would help students and adults interested in drama gain information where theaters remain active according to particular tastes.

The purpose of this study is three-fold, and it is predicated on these assumptions. First, on the basis of the information obtained, the methods of disseminating news of student accomplishments on campus can be improved. Secondly, by knowing the form and content desired by the various papers, a college can provide more of the type of news which will be printed, therefore bringing recognition to deserving students in all areas of campus endeavor. Thirdly, by recognizing achievements of individual students, the College, indirectly, will benefit from the publicity.
