The 1952 contest between Taft and Eisenhower presumed the victor would have a strong voice in determining the policies and politics of the party. Though neither could establish the direction of the party alone, the outcome of the contest would determine the course of the Republican party.

The delegates to the 1952 Republication convention were in four categories: (1) those committed to Eisenhower, (2) those committed to Taft, (3) those committed to neither candidate, (4) those whose credentials were contested.

The main purpose of this thesis is to study early Huguenot political theory as represented by Francis Hotman's chief work, Franco-Gallia. It was a book written toward a specific and during a crucial time for France; yet its message is hardly limited to its time. Franco-Gallia is not one of the most important books ever written on political theory; it is, however, one of the most important books of the early Huguenot era, if not the most important one. And since this paper is a study of early Huguenot thought, its focus is on Franco-Gallia.
