A Geographical Analysis Of The Production And Marketing Of Fresh Fruits And Vegetables In Florida, Georgia, And South Carolina, Sidney Roberts Jumper

Doctoral Dissertations

One of the more recent developments in the field of geography has been an interest in the marketing of agricultural and industrial products. A few geographers have made studies of a general nature in the realm of marketing and many business and economic experts have made careful inquiries into the costs of marketing various products. There have been few studies, however, of detailed investigations of the geographic aspects of the marketing of specific commodities.

The Relationship Of Skin Conductance To Behavior In A Vigilance Task, David Stea Sep 1960

The Relationship Of Skin Conductance To Behavior In A Vigilance Task, David Stea

Psychology ETDs

The present study is an attempt to measure the correlation between "vigilance", as indicated by signal detection, and the galvanic skin response (GSR). The following four dependent variables were measured:

(a) Galvanic skin response (continuously recorded, although discrete values were later selected for measurement);

(b) ommission errors (where S fails to detect a signal which has occurred);

(c) commission errors (or "false detections", where S detects a signal which has not in fact occurred); and

(d) reaction times to signals.

The major purpose of the present study was, in part, to replicate the Ross, Dardano, and Hackman study utilizing more …

The Effects Of Water Deprivation On The Body Weight, Food Intake And Water Intake Of The Albino Rat, Kenneth A. Blick Jul 1960

The Effects Of Water Deprivation On The Body Weight, Food Intake And Water Intake Of The Albino Rat, Kenneth A. Blick

Master's Theses

A survey of the literature reveals a substantial body of research concerned with the effects of food and/or water deprivation on body weight, food and water intake, and activity of the albino rat. This research is important because many psychological experiments, particularly those studies in the field of animal learning in which motivation is induced by the use of a nutritional maintenance schedule, require some measurement of performance on consecutive days during which the rats are in a motivational state.

An Experimental Investigation Of The Differential Effects Of Hypnotic, Post-Hypnotic And Waking Suggestion On Learning, With Tasks Varied In Complexity, Herman Carl Salzberg Jun 1960

An Experimental Investigation Of The Differential Effects Of Hypnotic, Post-Hypnotic And Waking Suggestion On Learning, With Tasks Varied In Complexity, Herman Carl Salzberg

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: This study was designed to test, first of all, whether there were any differential learning effects following hypnotic, post-hypnotic, and waking suggestion. Secondly, the investigation was designed to test whether learning following suggestion increased or decreased differentially when learning tasks varied in complexity. Finally, the study was set up to find out whether there was a difference between the quality and quantity of learning following suggestion. A large number of the features of previous experiments in the area of hypnosis and learning were combined. As past experimenters found contradictory results, no hypotheses were forwarded regarding the outcome of this …

Geographic Factors Influencing The Manufactural Industries Of Upper East Tennessee, Terry Elmer Epperson Jun 1960

Geographic Factors Influencing The Manufactural Industries Of Upper East Tennessee, Terry Elmer Epperson

Doctoral Dissertations

This study presents an inventory and analysis of the geographic and socio-economic factors influencing the location and development of manufactural industries in Upper East Tennessee. A combination of many determinants has gradually changed the basic economic structure of the area from that of a modified form of subsistence agriculture to one of manufactural importance within the state and in the United States. Integration of the physical and cultural complexities of the area shows causation for the present and continued position of manufactural prominence. Some of the elementary facts concerning the location of manufacturing which make this area prominent are: (1) …

The Role Of Natural Law In American Political Thought, Priscilla Deane Biggs Jun 1960

The Role Of Natural Law In American Political Thought, Priscilla Deane Biggs

Political Science ETDs

It has been a rather consistent pattern for natural law thinking to flourish in times of crisis and times of "faith," varied as the "faiths" have been. Accordingly, it does not seem overly surprising to find in our present period of high tension many troubled souls being drawn toward the old natural concept and advocating its revival, advocating it as a kind of "natural cement" to paste together a badly disunited world.

Beliefs And Attitudes Of Recent High School Graduates On The Subject Of Beverage Alcohol, Francis E. Chape Jun 1960

Beliefs And Attitudes Of Recent High School Graduates On The Subject Of Beverage Alcohol, Francis E. Chape

Masters Theses

Introduction

During recent years, many investigations concerning the teen-ager and beverage alcohol have been carried out. A survey of the available literature on this subject revealed that most of the studies have been made to determine the attitudes toward drinking and the drinking behavior of this age group. These studies, Maddox1 states, provide "The basis for generalizations about drinking in high school which are more substantial than impressionistic guesses."

Generalizations, however, have not been limited to drinking behavior alone. Alcohol education programs, required by law in every state in the union,2 have received much criticism in recent times. …

Preliminary Investigations In The Effect Of Continually Changing Reinforcement On Learning And Extinction, Michael Dinoff Jun 1960

Preliminary Investigations In The Effect Of Continually Changing Reinforcement On Learning And Extinction, Michael Dinoff

Masters Theses

A great deal of research has been done in the general area of manipulating reinforcement parameters. However, reinforcement per se has rarely been varied systematically from trial to trial. The research exceptions have been indicated. In these experiments , the nutritive value, the delay, or the units of reinforcement have been systematically varied and the results are not always conclusive as regards the experimental variable itself. The present study attempts to control for these factors and yet vary systematically properties of the reinforcing agent alone. Pigeons were the experimental subjects and they worked for food while they were at a …

The Efficiency Of Bilingual Children In Understanding Analogies In The English Language, Veta Walker Mercer May 1960

The Efficiency Of Bilingual Children In Understanding Analogies In The English Language, Veta Walker Mercer

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

It is felt that the bilingual population in the southwest is of significantly large enough proportions to warrant specialized emphasis on its education problems. These children need to become better comprehensive readers, not merely word-callers. Teachers frequently assume that if their pupils recognize the words of selection, comprehension is assured. Unfortunately, this is not true in many instances. There are many aspects of English language which might cause bilingual children some difficulty. A few of these might be the analogy, synonym, homonym, multiple meaning, antonym, and the idiomatic expression. This study is designed to reveal the extent which bilingual children …

Grammatical Structure Of Santa Ana Keresan, Irvine Davis May 1960

Grammatical Structure Of Santa Ana Keresan, Irvine Davis

Anthropology ETDs

It is hoped that the present study will contribute to the knowledge of the grammatical structure of Keresan, which to the present has received little systematic treatment. Published grammatical material is confined to Boas' annotated Laguna texts and Toomey's brief outline. Unpublished manuscripts include Spencer's Master's Thesis which contains considerable data but suffers from faulty transcription, a failure to keep the several dialects separate and a lack of an over-all structural analysis. At the present time a thorough analysis of Acoma Keresan is being undertaken by Wick R. Miller of the University of California.

A Political Study Of Federal Aid To Education At Utah State University, Richard Yates Merrell May 1960

A Political Study Of Federal Aid To Education At Utah State University, Richard Yates Merrell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the present-day world of change, every time we pick up the paper we read of something new in our society. We now have new rockets, new satellites, new computers, and new methods or destruction. There are also many "new" things in the field of education. One of these is federal aid to education. As yet, there seems to be no consensus on the merits of this supposedly new approach to educational finance. Some view it as a kind or plague; others see it as an unmixed blessing. Actually, federal aid to education is quite old and quite common.

Predicting Mathematics 34 And 35 Grades At Utah State University, Donald N. Jensen May 1960

Predicting Mathematics 34 And 35 Grades At Utah State University, Donald N. Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Incoming freshman students are confronted early in their college career with the problem of selecting a program of study that fits their needs, capacities and interests. Counselors and advisors have found that a large number of students do not give prior deliberation to the selection of a major field of study. For the most part, students use a trial and error method in making their choices. That is, their choice is a result of success in previous class work. Although some effort is being made by educational personnel to resolve this problem, a large amount of objective research remains to …

Economics ETDs

This paper is an inquiry into the loaning activity of one bank, The Albuquerque National. This institution has prospered and grown in the face of every possible change in the business cycle. It has been confronted with the most problems that might come to a bank, and yet it had been able to fulfill its responsibilities to self and community. This bank has helped spur the growth of the local economy and, also, it has been able to effectively minimize its loan risk. It has approved the ideal balance mentioned before. The manner in which this has been accomplished is …

The Value Of Presuppositions Of Economic Theory, Tom R. De Gregori Apr 1960

The Value Of Presuppositions Of Economic Theory, Tom R. De Gregori

Economics ETDs

Every area of inquiry is replete with presuppositions unconsciously assented to by the vast majority of those practicing the discipline. Economic value theory is not an exception to this general rule. The problem facing economists is to ferret out these preconceptions and subject them to scientific analysis. To do this we must first understand what is meant by a preconception and the way these preconceptions affect our analysis. The Newtonian presuppositions are of special importance to us since they form the foundation of classical economics. We must therefore demonstrate the social origins of Newtonianism and trace their development through classical …

The Effect Of Manifest Anxiety And Failure Instructions On Delinquents' Performance On The W.I.S.C. Coding Test, Herbert J. Cross Apr 1960

The Effect Of Manifest Anxiety And Failure Instructions On Delinquents' Performance On The W.I.S.C. Coding Test, Herbert J. Cross

Master's Theses

It is generally accepted by most researchers that motivational factors are important in the prediction of behavior. The nature of the relationship between those factors and behavior is not well understood but appear to depend at least on such variables as effect the difficulty of the behavioral task and the degree of the motivation involved.

The Uptake Of Sodium Ions By The Tongue, Magill Echols Mar 1960

The Uptake Of Sodium Ions By The Tongue, Magill Echols

Masters Theses

We have seen a wealth of data demonstrating that salt prefer ence thresholds decrease as salt deprivation continues. Careful studies indicate that these fluctuations cannot be accounted for in terms of changes in neural excitatory thresholds. It is reasonable to assume that something on or about the tongue may change with sodium deprivation. The problem approached in this study was the search for evidence of such a change.

The experimental hypothesis was, "that sodium ions actually penetrate the surface of the tongue according to the sodium depriva tion experienced by the animal."

This was basically a search for processes associated …

"Uneconomic" Projects For Economic Development In Selected Asian Countries, Nguyen Van Thuan Jan 1960

"Uneconomic" Projects For Economic Development In Selected Asian Countries, Nguyen Van Thuan

Economics ETDs

Let us assume that, at this time and age, and in this paper, the economic efficiency of the West and its scientific and material achievements are set up as goals for development in what is called today underdeveloped or developing countries. In other words, we assume that people in the East desire the same things the West desires and that they will go about to obtain these things the same way people in the West did. (This will throw overboard the age-old scorn of material things, and the contempt of money-making business of the East.) We further assume that Western …
