Advancing Technology & Digital Lifestyles: Facilitating A Group Independent Study, Kailey Droz Apr 2022

Advancing Technology & Digital Lifestyles: Facilitating A Group Independent Study, Kailey Droz

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

For my senior capstone project, I facilitated a group independent study (ISP) through Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Western Washington University called Advancing Technology and Digital Lifestyles. A small group of students and I critically and creatively analyzed our relationship with technology, and its impacts on the individual, interpersonal relationships, culture, and society. Prior to facilitating, I did research within the fields of cyberpsychology, social psychology, communication studies, and media studies. I am sharing my syllabus and facilitation notes, my final project (two short stories), an annotated bibliography, and a reflection on the group ISP and my process.

Defining The Millennial Superwoman: Strategies For Work-Life Integration, Jocelyn Davies Apr 2016

Defining The Millennial Superwoman: Strategies For Work-Life Integration, Jocelyn Davies

Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences

Defining the Millennial Superwoman: Strategies for Work-Life Integration uncovers the perceptions of millennial females and contrasts them with the perceptions of working women in other generations. This research determines how millennial females are different in their search for work-life integration – the act of mixing work and personal life – and explains what this difference means for companies in the upcoming years. Historically, there has been much literature focused on women fighting for equality to get into the workforce, as well as why highly educated and successful women began taking themselves out of the workforce. However, there is a gap …

The Influence Of Instagram On Exercise And Eating Behavior, Bridgette Kosek Apr 2015

The Influence Of Instagram On Exercise And Eating Behavior, Bridgette Kosek

Honors Projects in Marketing

The use of social media, specifically Instagram, of 305 Bryant University students ages 18-28 was investigated through student completion of an online survey to examine how following exercise and food related Instagram accounts impacts behavior. Both male and females use Instagram fairly equally, though males are more responsive to food Instagram accounts than females, who have no significant difference in behavior. Both males and females who follow exercise Instagram accounts are significantly more active than those who do not follow exercise Instagram accounts. Given the recent explosive use of Instagram in the population, the implications for this study are enormous, …

People With Multiple Unhealthy Lifestyles Are Less Likely To Consult Primary Healthcare, Xiaoqi Feng, Federico Girosi, Ian S. Mcrae Jan 2014

People With Multiple Unhealthy Lifestyles Are Less Likely To Consult Primary Healthcare, Xiaoqi Feng, Federico Girosi, Ian S. Mcrae

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Background Behavioural interventions are often implemented within primary healthcare settings to prevent type 2 diabetes and other lifestyle-related diseases. Although smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and poor diet are associated with poorer health that may lead a person to consult a general practitioner (GP), previous work has shown that unhealthy lifestyles cluster among low socioeconomic groups who are less likely to seek primary healthcare. Therefore, it is uncertain whether behavioural interventions in primary healthcare are reaching those in most need. This study investigated patterns of GP consultations in relation to the clustering of unhealthy lifestyles among a large sample of …

Neighborhood Socioeconomic Circumstances And The Co-Occurrence Of Unhealthy Lifestyles: Evidence From 206,457 Australians In The 45 And Up Study, Xiaoqi Feng, Thomas Astell-Burt

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Background: Research on the co-occurrence of unhealthy lifestyles has tended to focus mainly upon the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of individuals. This study investigated the relevance of neighborhood socioeconomic circumstance for multiple unhealthy lifestyles. Method: An unhealthy lifestyle index was constructed for 206,457 participants in the 45 and Up Study (2006-2009) by summing binary responses on smoking, alcohol, physical activity and five diet-related variables. Higher scores indicated the co-occurrence of unhealthy lifestyles. Association with self-rated health, quality of life; and risk of psychological distress was investigated using multilevel logistic regression. Association between the unhealthy lifestyle index with neighborhood characteristics (local …

Contrasting The Culture Of Polyamory And Monogamy, Joseph A. Santiago Mr May 2011

Contrasting The Culture Of Polyamory And Monogamy, Joseph A. Santiago Mr

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Center

As families get busier and become extended through marriage, adoption, and mutual commitments, people struggle to describe their relationships in familiar ways that gives them legitimacy as they expand out of the nuclear family model. The idea that Monogamy or Polyamory is the best form for relationships to take is just as an absurd notion as attempting to hold people to a monocultural idea of morality on these matters. Not educating people to understand and interact with each other through the diverse forms of family and relationships is causing a lot of pain and wrongly isolating many people. Regardless of …

From Cellblocks To Suburbia: Tattoos As Subcultural Style, Commodity And Self-Expression, Erin Teffs Dec 2010

From Cellblocks To Suburbia: Tattoos As Subcultural Style, Commodity And Self-Expression, Erin Teffs

Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies

This research study uses scholarship on tattooing, popular cultural representation and the practice and experience of tattooing to look at how subcultures (social groups excluded from mainstream society) express themselves through style and how style creates meaning and identification. These subcultures differ from other subcultures, such as racially marginalized groups, in that they create style in order to separate themselves from the mainstream. These marginal ideas of style are often picked up and adapted by America’s mainstream, materialistic culture and marketed as “cool” by corporations and other members of mainstream society for mass consumption. When discussing related subcultural theory in …

Aids Art: Activism On Canvas, Lucy Sumners May 2008

Aids Art: Activism On Canvas, Lucy Sumners

Senior Honors Projects

Protest art is all around us. Whether we realize it or not, we are influenced by the political, social, or cultural messages that are within the artworks. I have always been interested in the effects of disease on a population and disease has had an effect on artists and the artworks that they produce throughout the ages. Today, AIDS has affected almost every single person on this planet and is a topic that enters political debates, affects the social constructs of society and carries many negative cultural connotations. AIDS first stormed through the United States in the early 1980s affecting …
