Subject-Package Measures To Understand The Value Provided By Journal Packages, Heidi J. Southworth, Evan Rusch, Nat Gustafson-Sundell Feb 2024

Subject-Package Measures To Understand The Value Provided By Journal Packages, Heidi J. Southworth, Evan Rusch, Nat Gustafson-Sundell

Library Services Publications

At Minnesota State University Mankato (MNSU), we have been exploring new Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for journal packages. Most recently, we started developing subject-package measures as a category, including as a measure of utility or as a measure of supply. Although we could previously combine filters per subject and per package, this caused us to narrow data to a single subject. Now, we can display the results for all subjects and packages as one table, which empowers us to make comparisons easily, to understand the value we gain from our packages better, and to see any subject impacts of cancellations …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The purpose of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the Resource Description and Access (RDA) research in library and information science journals in Web of Science. Two hundred and fifty-eight journal articles related to RDA were extracted from Web of Science for analysis for the period between 2006 and 2020. A descriptive analysis of the most productive authors, institutions, countries, and journals and the most cited authors was conducted. To illuminate the major themes, the selected articles were also subjected to a co-word analysis and a document co-citation analysis using the visualization tool VOSviewer. The co-word analysis …

Wiley Journal Package: Unl Download Activity By Subject, David C. Tyler, Casey Hoeve, David Macaulay, Robin Mcclanahan

UNL Libraries: White Papers

Because the field of librarianship has been reconsidering its relationship to commercial academic publishers and their 'Big Deal' journal packages, the authors decided to review the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's usage of Wiley's package. In this report, the authors looked into whether UNL's downloads by subject were such that subscribing to a number of hypothetical smaller, subject-specific packages, rather than to the entire Wiley package, might be a viable strategy.

Material Format Preference Of Music Faculty At Kennesaw State University, A. Carey Huddlestun Dec 2021

Material Format Preference Of Music Faculty At Kennesaw State University, A. Carey Huddlestun

Faculty and Research Publications

Historically, collection development has focused on what material to purchase. However, with the maturation of web-based music audio databases, web-based video databases, online music scores, electronic books and reference material, and commercial audio/visual streaming services, the format of material is also now an important collection consideration. Faced with difficult collection development decisions due to the Performing Arts Library’s (PAL) limited space being filled beyond capacity with physical material, PAL librarians at Kennesaw State University (KSU) sought to discover the material and format preference of music faculty. This was done to see if faculty would use digital material, requiring no physical …

Advantages And Challenges Of Open Access Resources During Covid-19 And Beyond, Barbara M. Pope Oct 2021

Advantages And Challenges Of Open Access Resources During Covid-19 And Beyond, Barbara M. Pope

Faculty Submissions

The COVID-19 pandemic taught librarians that we needed to up our game of providing access to needed resources to serve patrons’ needs even while our physical buildings were shuttered last year. Some vendors and publishers offered deals to libraries to convert their print book purchases or journal subscriptions to online; however, not all libraries had funds to do this. Other publishers offered free access to part or all of their resources to libraries, and some are continuing to do so even though some libraries have returned to more normal operations. Open access resources have been around for years, and allow …

Barriers For Library And Information Science Researchers From Developing Countries: What The “Library Philosophy And Practice Phenomenon” Tells Us, Brady Lund

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This short commentary introduces and discusses the “Library Philosophy and Practice (LPP) Phenomenon,” wherein a scholarly journal published in a developed country has an extremely large number of authors from developing countries, relative to the typical journal. Elements of journals that fit the LPP phenomenon are discussed, as well as what this phenomenon says about barriers to scholarly publishing for researchers from developing nations. Implications for journals that lack diverse authorship from developing nations are listed. This phenomenon may be studied in other disciplines to further illuminate divides in the scholarly realm.

Because the field of librarianship has been examining its relationship to commercial academic publishers and their 'Big Deal' journal packages, the authors elected to examine one such package, Wiley's. The authors' hoped to determine whether the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's usage was concentrated enough and consistent enough over a multi-year interval for download data to be useful in identifying journals for hypothetical individual subscriptions or for inclusion in a hypothetical smaller, UNL-specific package.

A Journal Usage Analysis During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Serials Trends And Implications, Rebecca Bealer, John Bourgeois

Library Faculty Publications

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic had wide-reaching effects throughout all of society. For libraries, this often translated to a quick pivot to support activities that moved to almost-exclusively online and remote for all patrons. Although the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans Library was somewhat unique in that it never closed during the 2020 height of the pandemic, the majority of its patrons were accessing its resources remotely. Spurred by local anecdotal evidence journal usage had surprisingly declined at a significant rate during 2020, this study aims to determine whether this decline could be demonstrated through statistical analysis of COUNTER 5 …

What metrics are most useful for comparing journal packages?

What data visualizations enable the most insight into the value of these packages?

How can libraries produce these kinds of reports, including data visualizations, as efficiently as possible?

Over the last several years at Minnesota State University, Mankato, we have iteratively developed standardized reports for journal collection development, outreach, and academic program support. We previously presented an early version of our package-level analysis reports, where we focused on how to use Tableau for data visualization. Now, we will demonstrate new and improved reports, with new package-level and subject-level metrics leading to …

Current Market Rates For Scholarly Publishing Services, Alexander Grossman, Björn Brembs Jan 2021

Current Market Rates For Scholarly Publishing Services, Alexander Grossman, Björn Brembs

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

For decades, the supra-inflation increase of subscription prices for scholarly journals has concerned scholarly institutions. After years of fruitless efforts to solve this “serials crisis”, open access has been proposed as the latest potential solution. However, the prices for open access publishing are also high and are rising well beyond inflation. What has been missing from the public discussion so far is a quantitative approach to determine the actual costs of efficiently publishing a scholarly article using state-of-the-art technologies, such that informed decisions can be made as to appropriate price levels. Here we provide a granular, step-by-step calculation of the …

Reference Analysis In Biotika Journals As The Scientific Literature In The Biology Field, Mohamad Nurzaman, Hanny Hafiar, Risa Nurisani, Nurul Asiah

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The quality of a scientific journal is determined by several standards. In Indonesia, one of the assessments of the quality of national journals uses the SINTA (Science and Technology Index) rating system. To obtain SINTA ranking results, it is necessary to match the contents of the journal with the assessment points contained in ARJUNA (National Journal Accreditation). Several points of assessment include primary and secondary reference ratios, the ratio of the reference source year, and the suitability of the article content with the focus and scope determined by each journal. Biotika is a Biology journal that is currently submitting for …

Open Is Not Forever: A Study Of Vanished Open Access Journals, Mikael Laakso, Lisa Matthias, Najko Jahn

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The preservation of the scholarly record has been a point of concern since the beginning of knowledge production. With print publications, the responsibility rested primarily with librarians, but the shift towards digital publishing and, in particular, the introduction of open access (OA) have caused ambiguity and complexity. Consequently, the long-term accessibility of journals is not always guaranteed, and they can even disappear from the web completely. The purpose of this exploratory study is to systematically study the phenomenon of vanished journals, something that has not been done before. For the analysis, we consulted several major bibliographic indexes, such as Scopus, …
