The transition to college represents a major life event, and successfully navigating this shift has implications for students’ psychosocial wellbeing. While there is ample support for the idea that social relationships can facilitate student wellbeing during the transition to college, there is limited understanding of the unique role faculty may play in supporting students. “When It’S Time To Come Together, We Come Together”: Reconceptualizing Theories Of Self-Efficacy For Health Information Practices Within Lgbtqia+ Communities, Alexander N. Vera, Travis L. Wagner, Vanessa L. Kitzie

This chapter addresses the shortcomings of current self-efficacy models describing the health information practices of LGBTQIA+ communities. Informed by semi-structured interviews with 30 LGBTQIA+ community leaders from South Carolina, findings demonstrate how their self-efficacy operates beyond HIV/AIDS research while complicating traditional models that isolate an individual’s health information practices from their abundant communal experiences. Findings also suggest that participants engage with health information and resources in ways deemed unhealthy or harmful by healthcare providers. However, such practices are nuanced, and participants carefully navigate them, balancing concerns for community safety and well-being over traditional engagements with healthcare infrastructures. This symposium features four scholar-practitioners of color working across the STEM-Medicine (STEM-M) pipeline who are actively engaging their cultural intuition (Delgado Bernal, 1998) to create access to higher education by challenging dominant pathways, practices, and cultures related to college readiness/preparedness, success, persistence, and the workforce transition.

The practice of supervision has several implications for the future of mental health. Despite these implications and a recent movement towards competency-based supervision, little research has been done on the construct of competency in supervision. This may be partially related to a lack of consensus as to what defines competency in supervision. Nevertheless, within the supervisory relationship, a supervisee’s perception that the supervisor is competent plays a role in the quality of the supervisory relationship. We can effectively mentor if in possession of qualities to empower mentees, which include: effective communication skills, knowledge of the professional realm, enthusiasm, passion and the ability to create an equitable and supportive organizational environment with the mentee. The authors of this article propose that self-talk (ST) or inner speech is a helpful means of inspiring mentors, colleagues, teachers, and friends in navigating communication challenges with themselves and others. The Latinx population has now become the largest minority group in the United States (Martínez & Rhodes, 2020). However, Latinx first-generations students still fall behind non-Latinx students in educational achievement. This study seeks to examine the Latinx first-generation academic experience amidst a pandemic, with an emphasis on looking at their perceived stress related to academics, their academic self-efficacy, and their knowledge/feelings toward the institutional supports.
