Consortium Benefits: Using Tv To Increase Library Consumption, Alicea Peyton

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This experiment was performed to determine if factors exist between increasing the consumption of independent libraries through the use of television; and the consideration of cutting related advertisement expense through the cost-sharing benefit of consortium membership. This paper examines a historical report provided by the American Library Association (1949) on the use of television by public libraries. In conjunction, two other research studies are examined on the subject of 1) consortium membership and benefits, and 2) whether the use of advertisement on cable television has a direct impact in increasing library consumption.

Libraries As Printers - Or - The Challenges Of Acquiring Pdf Scores And Parts From Self-Publishing Composers, Lisa Rae Philpott

Western Libraries Presentations

While the electronic publishing of books and scores has become commonplace, e-publishing of scores by major music publishers has lagged-behind. Libraries and music publishers are unwilling to relinquish the print format, but the proliferation of music notation software has given rise to greater numbers of self-publishing composers, keen to sell and deliver their musical works in PDF.

The Music Library at the University of Western Ontario is an anomaly, in that it acquires, catalogues, and circulates music for the Faculty of Music’s choirs and large ensembles. A faculty member’s request to participate in a large-scale commission of a new work …

Developing A Social Justice Mindset In Technical Services, Ione T. Damasco

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

These days, the words "equity," "diversity," and "inclusion" are used throughout libraries. But what do people mean when they use these words? And how do these words manifest in library technical services work? In this talk, participants explored how they can give these words real power when they frame them within a social justice mindset. The program started with an understanding of who participants are as individuals and how they fit into larger systems and structures of societal oppression. They they explored together how their work in technical services can contribute to the dismantling of those systems to ensure a …

When Does A New Role Cease To Be New?: Situating The Work Of Library-Based Digital Humanities/Scholarship Support Positions, Paige C. Morgan, Helene Williams Oct 2018

When Does A New Role Cease To Be New?: Situating The Work Of Library-Based Digital Humanities/Scholarship Support Positions, Paige C. Morgan, Helene Williams

Library Articles, Papers, and Presentations

When positions are considered new and substantially undefined, there is a risk of their continual expansion to encompass more tasks and responsibilities. Such is the case with the roles of Digital Humanities/Scholarship (DH/DS) Library professionals, which libraries have been hiring since around 2009. We have gathered over 150 job ads for these positions and are analyzing them on a number of vectors using AntConc, Tableau, and NVivo. Our previous 10-minute snapshot presentation at DLF 2016https://osf.io/vu22f/ introduced this dataset with particular attention to the credential requirements; since then, our corpus has nearly doubled in size, showing the continued growth in …

A Blueprint On Self-Exploration To Justice: Introduction To “Referencing Audre Lorde” & “Lesbian Librarianship For All”, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz

Publications and Research

My approach to social justice problematizes the profession by challenging the librarian to focus inwardly to a space concentrated with identity and self-exploration. To galvanize justice, the librarian may impose her or himself into the reference interaction as an element of praxis.

Referencing Audre Lorde, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz Oct 2018

Referencing Audre Lorde, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz

Publications and Research

This chapter is close a reading and textual analysis of canonical texts, speeches, and archived audio recordings of Audre Lorde. It embraces Lorde’s many identities, including her identity as a librarian who chose to depart from the library as a means of survival. The author urges reference librarians to study Lorde’s example and learn from Lorde’s choice to act in a space where silence can be transformed into language and action. Acknowledgment of the limitations and opportunities that Lorde teaches us in reference service and institutional structures, may allow for librarians to move toward a realm of justice.

Lesbian Librarianship For All: A Manifesto, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz Oct 2018

Lesbian Librarianship For All: A Manifesto, Shawn(Ta) Smith-Cruz

Publications and Research

This essay intends to bridge the gap between two under-appreciated communities by committing to ways that each enhances the other. The complications for being a lesbian librarian outlined here may be applied to any librarian or any lesbian by acknowledging how the two communities mirror each other in positions of marginality, struggle, and implication for silence, each active in a movement toward justice. I intend for this chapter to act as a type of autobiographical manifesto, coupled with an invitation for both lesbians and librarians to stake a claim as lesbian librarian.

Mayflower: Ode To New Beginnings — A New Column For New Times With A Positive Mission, Antje Mays

Library Faculty and Staff Publications

Numerous studies and articles downplay the value of libraries, citing instances of library defunding, layoffs, and outright closures, along with studies on the waning usefulness of libraries based on flawed quantifiables. Such pronouncements spread fear of obsolescence and irrelevance, contributing to dissatisfaction in the library profession. Yet polls in the United States and Great Britain reveal the library profession's enduring value among the most trusted professions.

To kick off the column "Mayflower: Ode to New Beginnings", this article frames library pressures in a context of broader trends affecting economic and educational conditions, examines professional stewardship and the library profession’s enduring …

Remix The Medieval Manuscript: Experiments With Digital Infrastructure, Laura Braunstein, Michelle R. Warren, Baylauris Byrnesim

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Remix the Manuscript: A Chronicle of Digital Experiments is a collaborative research project that takes up this challenge. It brings together academics, librarians, technologists, conservators, and students to study the many permutations of a single manuscript—a fifteenth-century Middle English prose chronicle of Great Britain, commonly referred to as the “Prose Brut.” Our project raises fundamental questions about the digital research environment. How is today’s code configuring tomorrow’s historical knowledge? How do digital technologies affect our access to and understanding of material culture? By investigating these broad questions through the example of one manuscript, we define a limited yet infinitely …

The Consequences Of Framing Digital Humanities Tools As Easy To Use, Paige C. Morgan Aug 2018

The Consequences Of Framing Digital Humanities Tools As Easy To Use, Paige C. Morgan

Library Articles, Papers, and Presentations

This article examines the recurring ways in which some of the most popular DH tools are presented as easy to use. It argues that attempts to couch powerful tools in what is often false familiarity, directly undermines the goal of encouraging scholarly innovation and risk taking. The consequences of framing digital tools as either easy or more difficult shapes the relationship between librarians and the students and faculty whose research they support, and, more broadly, the role and viability of libraries as spaces devoted to skill acquisition.

Only Connect: Graduate Students, Mobile Devices, And Academic Workflows, Lee Ann Fullington, Frans Albarillo

Publications and Research

Students often own multiple devices, including laptops, smartphones, and tablets, and work within these personal device ecosystems for academic purposes. This qualitative study explores the research question: how are graduate students using mobile technologies in their academic practices? Rather than simply counting how many devices a student uses, we delve into how they use the devices and how their workflow for completing academic tasks emerged and is adapted throughout the course of their studies. We selected graduate students, as this group is underrepresented in the literature and their responsibilities for employment and family life are often different than those of …

Library Perceptions During Times Of Terror: Students Affected By The October 1 Shooting And Their Impressions Of Safety In The Academic Library Community, Kelsey Lupo

Library Faculty Presentations

After the mass terrorism event in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017, the University of Nevada Las Vegas community used the spaces of their school to shelter and heal. During that attack that occurred only three miles away from campus, the library was described as a sanctuary that students reportedly did not want to leave. In an attempt to gain insight into what makes a community space safe and comforting, especially during an attack like the Mandalay Bay shooting, survey data will be collected from UNLV students to evaluate their perceptions of safety within the school’s main branch library. What …

Are We There Yet? Sustaining Enthusiasm And Powering The Repository Road Trip, Jen W. Green

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Like a road trip, building and sustaining an open repository is rich with anticipation, road maps, detours, persistence, perseverance, and finally, a deep sense of accomplishment for weathering the experiences and reaching a destination. Dartmouth’s repository road trip has been long and winding, but in 2017 the Library launched Open Dartmouth: Faculty Open Access on Digital Commons. After a long journey, this seemed like the primary destination, but like most road trips, the destination was the start of the next journey: sustaining growth and participation to continue to build this valuable open resource.

Road trips offer time to better understand …

This is a visual demonstration of their current curriculum mapping project. The step-by-step process will be outlined to show the different approaches to breaking down ACRL’s Information Literacy Framework to fit the curriculum of a campus. By categorizing classes into pre-disciplinary and major-based, needs emerge at distinct levels which helps make the building of the framework more manageable. These categorizations allow for better understanding and ownership across both core classes and within disciplines on a campus, giving the flexibility to meet the varying needs while reinforcing skills and concepts gained in other courses. This poster will also highlight how student …

Working with large data sets can be a challenge for both librarians and external stakeholders. Vendors often provide scads of data about the products we use, but sifting through it takes time. Visualization tools exist to help distill meaning from particularly dense data. This talk provides a look at how data visualization approaches can differ based on a variety of organizational factors such as staffing capacity, costs, and specific project requirements. We offer a nuts-and-bolts look at a serials and journals shared print project from the Eastern Academic Scholars’ Trust that uses Tableau and OpenRefine to create collection retention scenarios …
