Surely there is enough kindling lying about in the Bible and in subsequent moral theology to fire up love for neighbors and compassion for countless “friends” in foreign parts--and in crisis. And, surely, the momentum of love’s labor for the just redistribution of resources, fueled by activists’ appeals for solidarity, should be sustained by stressing that we are creatures made for affection, not for aggression. Yet experience, plus the history of the Christian traditions, taught Reinhold Niebuhr, who memorably reminded Christian realists, how often love was “defeated,” how a “strategy of brotherhood . . . degenerates from mutuality to a …

Marginalized Stakeholders And Performative Politics: Dueling Discourses In Education Policymaking, Celina Su
Marginalized Stakeholders And Performative Politics: Dueling Discourses In Education Policymaking, Celina Su

American urban education policy debates pivot around dueling lines of discourse on what ails inner-city youth; such students are portrayed as emblems of a largely African-American and Latino ‘culture of failure’, even as their voices remain largely absent from debates about them. In response, youth-led organizations attempt to forward youth as political stakeholders. I draw upon ethnographic data from two such organizations to examine the performative aspects of their campaign work. I focus on how they engaged in (1) counter-scripting, to imagine themselves as political stakeholders and substantively prepare themselves for their new roles, and in (2) counter-staging, to gain …

In 1961, Julia Child published Mastering the Art of French Cooking, among the most celebrated cookbooks of the 20th century. Designed to demystify the intricacies of French cuisine and convince the “servantless American cook” that she could conquer any of the recipes contained therein, Child’s book helped to bring French food out of upscale city restaurants and into the kitchens of families across the country.
Sixteen years earlier, Buwei Yang Chao had taken on a similar task, though she met with much less widespread success than Child would. Chao’s How to Cook and Eat in Chinese (1945) did not only …

Groundwater biogeochemistry is adversely impacted when municipal solid waste leachate, rich in nutrients and anthropogenic compounds, percolates into the subsurface from leaking landfills. Detecting leachate contamination using statistical techniques is challenging because well strategies or analytical techniques may be insufficient for detecting low levels of groundwater contamination. We sampled profiles of the microbial community from monitoring wells surrounding a leaking landfill using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) targeting the 16S rRNA gene. Results show in situ monitoring of bacteria, archaea, and the family Geobacteraceae improves characterization of groundwater quality. Bacterial T-RFLP profiles showed shifts correlated to known gradients of …

Just about every time I open a journal or read a blog online, I see something about e-books saving newspapers and magazines. Both magazines and newspapers–and really all scholalry communication–are going the way of all flesh, we’re told, but e-book reading may provide a stay of execution, however short that may be. It got me to thinking if there might be something else that would provide a similarDies Irae proroguement for scholarly communication in general. That’s when it occurred to me it could well be open access (OA), or at least as I envision it here.
Discovering Cristina: A Study Of Cristina Peri Rossi's Life And Literary Works And Marketing Them To Worldwide Audiences, Dunja Zdero
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
As one of the leading female authors of the Latin American literature, Cristina Peri Rossi has produced a large collection of works including more than 40 published novels, essays, and short story and poetry collections. Her literature is known for addressing various topics such as political and social injustices, love, passion, feminism, sexuality, and gender studies. As an exile in Spain, Peri Rossi also offers an interesting blend of the two Spanish-speaking worlds. Although many other authors speak of the same issues, Peri Rossi provides a very unique insight into both cultures that cannot be seen elsewhere: an insight of …
First Responder Attitudes About Naloxone Use For Prevention Of Drug Overdose Deaths, Center For Interventions, Treatment & Addictions Research
First Responder Attitudes About Naloxone Use For Prevention Of Drug Overdose Deaths, Center For Interventions, Treatment & Addictions Research
Unintentional Prescription Drug Poisoning Project
To identify first responder attitudes about the role of naloxone distribution programs in prevention of Unintentional Prescription Drug Poisoning, a web‐based survey was created and administered in November, 2010. The survey contained 19 questions and took about 5‐7 minutes to complete. A total of 72 people completed the on‐line survey. Survey results indicate that first responders viewed unintentional prescription drug overdose mortality as a significant problem in the Miami Valley, but the majority did not think that naloxone training and distribution to drug users would be an effective or appropriate prevention strategy. The main limitation of the results of …

Does Productivity Respond To Exchange Rate Appreciations? A Theoretical And Empirical Investigation, Yao Tang
Does Productivity Respond To Exchange Rate Appreciations? A Theoretical And Empirical Investigation, Yao Tang
Economics Department Working Paper Series
Although real currency appreciations pose direct difficulties for exporters and import-competing firms as they will face more intense competition, is it possible that such competition spurs firms to improve productivity? To answer this question, the paper first constructs a theoretical model to show how the competitive pressures of currency appreciations induce firms to improve productivity by adopting new technologies. In addition, the model predicts that during appreciations there will be a positive relation between market concentration and improvements in productivity for industries highly exposed to trade, because the marginal benefits of productivity improvement will be bigger for firms with a …

Faculty And Student Expectations And Perceptions Of E-Mail Communication In A Campus And Distance Doctor Of Pharmacy Program, Pamela A. Foral, Paul D. Turner, Michael S. Monaghan, Ryan W. Walters, Jennifer J. Merkel, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Thomas J. Lenz
Communication Faculty Publications
Objective. To examine faculty members’ and students’ expectations and perceptions of e-mail communication in a dual pathway pharmacy program. Methods. Three parallel survey instruments were administered to campus students, distance students, and faculty members, respectively. Focus groups with students and faculty were conducted. Results. Faculty members perceived themselves as more accessible and approachable by e-mail than either group of students did. Campus students expected a shorter faculty response time to e-mail and for faculty members to be more available than did distance students. Conclusion. E-mail is an effective means of computer-mediated communication between faculty members and students and can be …
