Pedagogy For The Economically Privileged: “Tuning In” To The Privileged Learner, Ann Curry-Stevens Oct 2003

Pedagogy For The Economically Privileged: “Tuning In” To The Privileged Learner, Ann Curry-Stevens

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Today’s activists are challenged by the sheer scope of losses by social movements. We have lost most significant battles and have moved into a defensive position struggling to retain earlier gains in social policy. The gap between rich and poor continues to widen, and it is clear that we need new allies in the struggles for justice. The middle class has been eyed as potential allies, with the hope that in bringing their resources, information, and power to bear, progressive social change will result. This paper draws from dissertation research on a pedagogy for the privileged: research that involves transformative …

Follow The Worker, Not The Work: Hard Lessons From Failed London Music Hall Magazines, Scott B. Fosdick Oct 2003

Follow The Worker, Not The Work: Hard Lessons From Failed London Music Hall Magazines, Scott B. Fosdick

Faculty Publications

London’s music hall stages and the variety entertainment that flourished there at the turn of the 20th century gave rise to a raft of magazines hopeful of gaining an audience from fans and/or performers and theater managers. Some flourished for a time, but all died with the artform, unlike their American cousin, Variety, which still thrives nearly a century after its first issue. This article compares the founding missions of these magazines to that of Variety in search of guiding principles for magazine management, particularly of business publications, in industries undergoing rapid change. The conflict between two long-standing principles of …

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

This quantitative study compared a print pathfinder and a web-based research tool in library instruction for two sections of a first-year business course. Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications

ECHO housing was introduced in the United States in the 1980s based on a program started in Australia in 1975. An ECHO unit is a small house in which an elderly person resides and which is placed near the home of a host (either relatives or close friends of the elderly person). The purpose of this arrangement is to make it convenient and efficient for the occupants of the host family dwelling to provide assistance to the elderly person residing in the smaller ECHO house.

Don’T Drown — Catch The Wave: Instruction At The Valley Library, P. S. Mcmillen

Library Faculty Publications

As many readers will no doubt be aware, librarians at OSU have done one-to-one and classroom instruction tor many years. However, 3S the information landscape changes, so do the students' needs tor learning how to navigate that ever-changing landscape. The rapidly increasing migration of print resources to electronic form removes many of the contextual and visual cues that alerted earlier users to the authority, accuracy, comprehensiveness, point of view, or other indicators by which to judge the quality of information sources. As the experts in the organization, access, and dissemination of information, librarians have stepped forward to teach students how …

Public Child Welfare And The American Indian: A California Profile, Gordon E. Limb, Robin Perry Oct 2003

Public Child Welfare And The American Indian: A California Profile, Gordon E. Limb, Robin Perry

Faculty Publications

Historically, American Indians have been disproportionately represented in public child welfare services. This article reports findings from a survey of all public child welfare workers in California (N= 5,741) in 1998. A descriptive profile of American Indian clients (where they reside and who works with them) and American Indian child welfare workers ( n= 1 71) is detailed. Attempts are made to identify counties with a disproportionately high number of American Indians represented on public child welfare caseloads and to estimate the probability that an American Indian worker would have a higher proportion of American Indians on his or her …

Long Memory Inflationary Dynamics: The Case Of Brazil, Mark E. Jensen, Valderio A. Reisen, Francisco Cribari-Neto Oct 2003

Long Memory Inflationary Dynamics: The Case Of Brazil, Mark E. Jensen, Valderio A. Reisen, Francisco Cribari-Neto

Faculty Publications

It has been argued by several authors that the inflationary dynamics in Brazil follow a unit root process, thus displaying some inertia. Indeed, Cati, et al. (Journal of Applied Econometrics, 1999) have found that the inflationary dynamics in Brazil are nearly fully inertial. We estimate the fractional differencing parameter using an ARFIMA specification for the inflation rate in that country and our results suggest that the inflationary dynamics are better modeled by a long memory process than by a unit root mechanism, thus implying that there is no inertia in inflation, contrary to what has been found by other researchers. …

Special Collections and University Archives Finding Aids: All Items

Donald J. Ivey donated research files he compiled and chronological biographies he created during his tenure as curator of collections at Heritage Village in Largo. These materials reflect his interest in Florida’s political history and include chronological biographies, clippings, photographs, and other research materials on notable Florida political leaders. Items fall within three distinct series: Chronological Biographies, Biographical Research Files on Individuals, and a Prosopographical File on the Office of the Lieutenant Governor. Most of the research and photocopies date from the mid-1980s through the late 1990s, though the collection does include a substantial number of microfilm copies of newspaper …
