Department of Political Science: Hendricks Symposium
Schedule, agenda, and brochure for HENDRICKS SYMPOSIUM 2002
Minorities within Minorities: Equality, Rights & Diversity
This symposium has been made possible through the support of the University of Nebraska’s Hendricks Fund. Established through the generosity of Mr. G. E. Hendricks, this fund is dedicated to supporting the exploration of “current controversial political questions… in a nonpartisan, unbiased manner.” Mr. Hendricks, an alumnus of the University and later an attorney in Colorado, believed that a more intelligent examination and consideration of political questions would lead to better government.
The Hendricks Fund is administered by the Political Science Department. Additional support has …

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Service Learning In Contemporary Japan And America, Joseph R. Feinburg
Service Learning In Contemporary Japan And America, Joseph R. Feinburg
International Service Learning & Community Engagement
Among the people of both Japan and the United States, there is currently widespread concern that the student population is in trouble, that students are losing interest in civic participation and their moral sensibility. Educators in both countries are looking toward service-learning as a means of recapturing a sense of civic responsibility in today's young people. The article discusses mandated service-learning and required service-learning in schools in Japan and Maryland.

The Impact Of Community Service Involvement On Three Measures Of Undergraduate Self-Concept, Joseph B. Berger, Jeffrey F. Milem
Higher Education
The central purpose of this study is to increase our understanding of how community service involvement affects the development of undergraduate self-concept. Disentangling Pay And Productivity In A Corporatist Economy: The Case Of Germany, Scott M. Fuess Jr., Meghan Millea
Disentangling Pay And Productivity In A Corporatist Economy: The Case Of Germany, Scott M. Fuess Jr., Meghan Millea
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
Conventional theory predicts that productivity gains lead to pay hikes. Pay increases, however, can influence labor productivity. But what about in a corporatist economy? Focusing on Germany, we use an innovative technique developed by Geweke to disentangle the relationship between pay and productivity.

An Empirical Test Of The Rent-Shifting Hypothesis: The Case Of State Trading Enterprises, Stephen F. Hamilton, Kyle W. Stiegert
An Empirical Test Of The Rent-Shifting Hypothesis: The Case Of State Trading Enterprises, Stephen F. Hamilton, Kyle W. Stiegert
Economics
A central result in the theoretical literature on strategic trade is the ‘rent-shifting hypothesis’, the idea that government’s can employ trade policy as a precommitment device to transfer profit from foreign to domestic firms. To our knowledge, however, the rent-shifting hypothesis remains untested empirically. This paper constructs a theory-based empirical test of rent-shifting behavior that relies on observations of government precommitment variables employed through State Trading Enterprises (STEs). The analysis applies data on the delayed producer payment structure of the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) and examines its merits as a rent-shifting mechanism in the international durum market. The model fails …

Runaway/Thrownaway Children: National Estimates And Characteristics., Heather Hammer, David Finkelhor, Andrea J. Sedlack
Crimes Against Children Research Center
Presents national estimates of children who ran away from or were thrown out of their homes, based on surveys of households and juvenile facilities. The Bulletin, which is part of a series summarizing findings from the Second National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children (NISMART–2), also analyzes characteristics of runaway/thrownaway children and episodes. Of the estimated 1,682,900 youth with a runaway/thrownaway episode during the study period, 37 percent were missing from their caretakers, and 21 percent were reported to authorities for help in locating them. Two-thirds of youth with a runaway/thrownaway episode were ages 15–17, and 71 …

National Estimates Of Missing Children: An Overview., Andrea J. Sedlack, David Finkelhor, Heather Hammer, Dana Schultz
Crimes Against Children Research Center
Presents an overview of the second National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children (NISMART-2). First in a series summarizing NISMART-2 findings, this Bulletin describes NISMART component surveys and estimating methodology and defines the types of missing child episodes studied: nonfamily abduction (including stereotypical kidnapping); family abduction; runaway/thrownaway; missing involuntary, lost, or injured; and missing benign explanation. The Bulletin also presents national estimates for children classified as caretaker missing and those reported missing to law enforcement or other agencies, by type of episode and by child's age, gender, and race/ethnicity. The authors note that only a small proportion …
Ambiguous Bleeding: Purity And Sacrifice In Bali, Lene Pedersen
Ambiguous Bleeding: Purity And Sacrifice In Bali, Lene Pedersen
Anthropology and Museum Studies Faculty Scholarship
Menstrual beliefs and practices in Bali defy simple classification. Menstruation may be relegated to the dump, as when a woman had to undergo a rite on a street midden when her monthly period coincided with the ritual time for a purification ceremony. But menstruation is also viewed as conferring raja status, and women do exhibit agency in this supposedly passive process. Experiences of menstruation, furthermore, may vary according to caste status.
