Influence Of Social Status, Physical Activity, And Socio-Demographics On Willingness To Pay For A Basket Of Organic Foods, Julia Knaggs, J. Ross Pruitt, Lindsay Anderson, Marco Palma

Sociology Faculty Research

Consumers are known to signal social status through their purchasing behaviors. As the food industry continually expands its use of strategic marketing to reach customers, understanding food’s connection to this kind of status signaling may open the door to explore new markets for farmers. This study explored the influence of social status, physical activity, and socio-demographics on an individual’s willingness to pay for a basket of high-quality organic foods. Over 3 days, participants had their physical activity measured by a pedometer, and they were randomly assigned to a social status condition and subsequently placed bids for the organic food basket …

Striving For Protection: Whistleblowers In Jordan, Wa'ed Alshoubaki, Michael Harris Apr 2022

Striving For Protection: Whistleblowers In Jordan, Wa'ed Alshoubaki, Michael Harris

Public Administration Faculty Research

Whistleblowers take it upon themselves to protect public goods and resources by blowing the whistle on corruption. Yet, they are at risk of facing retaliation from their employers, as well as of experiencing firing, unfair appraisal, and isolation at work. In this article, we investigate the extent of whistleblower protection in Jordan. We discuss whistleblowers’ significant role in reporting wrongdoings and fighting corruption, as well as the price that whistleblowers pay to protect the public interest. In this study, we used the protection analysis approach by identifying the potential risks to which whistleblowers are exposed. Specifically, we used official documents …

Comparing Experiences Of Constitutional Reforms To Enshrine The Right To Water In Brazil, Colombia, And Peru: Opportunities And Limitations, Lara Côrtes, Camila Gianella, Angela M. Páez, Catalina Vallejo Piedrahíta

Public Administration Faculty Research

In this paper we compare recent efforts towards the constitutionalization of the right to water in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru to understand the opportunities and limitations related to the attempts to enhance access to piped water to the highest normative level. Peru passed a constitutional amendment in 2017 while Brazil and Colombia have seen much right-to-water activism but have not succeeded in passing such reforms. We explore the role of the existing domestic legal frameworks on drinkable water provision and water management towards the approval of constitutional amendments. We find that all three countries have specialized laws, water governing institutions, …

Behavioral Context Affects Social Signal Representations Within Single Primate Prefrontal Cortex Neurons, Vladimir Jovanovic, Adam R. Fishbein, Lisa A. De La Mothe, Kuo-Fen Lee, Cory T. Miller Nov 2021

Behavioral Context Affects Social Signal Representations Within Single Primate Prefrontal Cortex Neurons, Vladimir Jovanovic, Adam R. Fishbein, Lisa A. De La Mothe, Kuo-Fen Lee, Cory T. Miller

Psychology Faculty Research

We tested whether social signal processing in more traditional, head-restrained contexts is representative of the putative natural analog – social communication – by comparing responses to vocalizations within individual neurons in marmoset prefrontal cortex (PFC) across a series of behavioral contexts ranging from traditional to naturalistic. Although vocalization responsive neurons were evident in all contexts, cross-context consistency was notably limited. A response to these social signals when subjects were head-restrained was not predictive of a comparable neural response to the identical vocalizations during natural communication, even within the same neuron. Neural activity at the population level followed a similar pattern, …

Jordan's Public Policy Response To Covid-19 Pandemic: Insight And Policy Analysis, Wa’Ed Alshoubaki, Michael Harris

Public Administration Faculty Research

The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of how the Jordanian government has responded and continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. It utilizes the interpretive policy analysis approach through document analysis. The analysis showed that Jordan created social protection policies to assist people who lost their jobs or whose work was suspended due to the coronavirus. The economic policies build solidarity and facilitate the private sector’s recovery. The health care measures firmly applied included lockdown, wearing masks, and restrictions on gatherings and public events. Jordan uses hard power and imposes sanctions on any violation that threatens …

Channeling Water Conflicts Through The Legislative Branch In Colombia, Angela M. Páez, Catalina Vallejo Piedrahíta Apr 2021

Channeling Water Conflicts Through The Legislative Branch In Colombia, Angela M. Páez, Catalina Vallejo Piedrahíta

Public Administration Faculty Research

This paper answers the question: has the Colombian Congress been effective at addressing relevant water conflicts and making them visible? While courts and social movements have been key for the advancement of social rights in Latin America, the role of legislators remains unclear. We conduct content analysis of all water-related bills, proposed bills, and constitutional amendments filed in Colombia from 1991 to 2020; we also analyzed Congress hearings of political control related to water, and the statutes of political parties who hold majority of seats in Congress; we also conducted interviews with key actors on water governance in Colombia. We …

Multiple Streams Theory: Insight Into The Global Compact On Migration, Wa'ed Alshoubaki, Michael Harris Mar 2021

Multiple Streams Theory: Insight Into The Global Compact On Migration, Wa'ed Alshoubaki, Michael Harris

Public Administration Faculty Research

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM) was founded based on the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants to address the immigrants' needs and hosting states' responsibilities. This study aims to better understand how GCM became part of the global public policy agenda and was formulated through the interactions of three main streams to create "the window of opportunity." This study reflects upon the knowledge of the policy process through leveraging the multiple streams theory (MST) and modifying it to reconcile the differences between the national and the global public policies. The synthetic review shows the …

Urban Agriculture In Asia To Meet The Food Production Challenges Of Urbanization: A Review, Onyekachukwu Akaeze, Dilip Nandwani Oct 2020

Urban Agriculture In Asia To Meet The Food Production Challenges Of Urbanization: A Review, Onyekachukwu Akaeze, Dilip Nandwani

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Urban expansion in Asia is concentrated in metropolitan areas. This has adversely affected in-city food production by decreasing farmlands in and around urban centers. Asian countries have experienced fast disappearance of urban-fringe farmland which at some point provided 70% of the vegetables consumed by the city's population. Uneven distribution of incomes, along with an increase in urban poverty, has further exacerbated the already critical problems of low quantity and quality and high prices of wholesome food. In India, it is estimated that five out of every six urban families typically spend 70% of their income on food. The United Nations …

Spontaneous Appearance And Transmission Of Polydactyly In Dexter Cattle, Richard Browning Jr., Emily G. Hayes, Andrea S. Lear Jan 2020

Spontaneous Appearance And Transmission Of Polydactyly In Dexter Cattle, Richard Browning Jr., Emily G. Hayes, Andrea S. Lear

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

A 3-yr-old Dexter cow and her yearling Dexter heifer calf exhibited polydactyly. Neither animal was linebred within 5 generations. This cow-calf pair represented the first reported occurrence of polydactyly in Dexter cattle in the US or abroad. Based upon external examination, the cow was classified as having a spontaneous unilateral case of polydactyly with an extra digit along the medial digit of the right front limb and the heifer was classified as having bilateral polydactyly because both front limbs exhibited an extra digit along the medial digit. Radiographic examination confirmed bilateral status of the heifer and revealed bilateral status of …

Effects Of Creep Feeding And Its Interactions With Other Factors On The Performance Of Meat Goat Kids And Dams When Managed On Pasture, Emily G. Hayes, Raquel V. Lourençon, Richard Browning Jr. Sep 2019

Effects Of Creep Feeding And Its Interactions With Other Factors On The Performance Of Meat Goat Kids And Dams When Managed On Pasture, Emily G. Hayes, Raquel V. Lourençon, Richard Browning Jr.

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Creep feeding and its possible interactions with other influential factors (genetics, litter type, and sex) for weaning traits were studied in meat goat kids and their dams. Kids across 3 yr were creep fed (254 kids; 5 pens) or not creep fed (255 kids; 5 pens) from 30 to 90 d of age. Creep-fed kids had higher (P ≤ 0.05) preweaning average daily weight gain and weaning weights (113.1 ± 13.0 g/d; 15.0 ± 0.8 kg) than kids not creep fed (99.8 ± 13.1 g/d; 14.0 ± 0.8 kg). However, financial returns were not higher (P > 0.05) for …

Methodological Issues With Coding Participants In Anonymous Psychological Longitudinal Studies, Lillian M. Audette, Marie S. Hammond, Natalie K. Rochester Apr 2019

Methodological Issues With Coding Participants In Anonymous Psychological Longitudinal Studies, Lillian M. Audette, Marie S. Hammond, Natalie K. Rochester

Psychology Faculty Research

Longitudinal studies are commonly used in the social and behavioral sciences to answer a wide variety of research questions. Longitudinal researchers often collect data anonymously from participants when studying sensitive topics to ensure that accurate information is provided. One difficulty gathering longitudinal anonymous data is that of correctly matching participants across waves of data collection. A number of methods have been proposed for using nonidentifying codes to match anonymous participants; however, currently there is no consensus on the most effective method. This article reviews and analyzes the literature on nonidentifying codes and provides recommendations for researchers interested in using these …

Integrating Wildfires Propagation Prediction Into Early Warning Of Electrical Transmission Line Outages, Songyi Dian, Peng Cheng, Qiang Ye, Jirong Wu, Ruisen Luo, Chen Wang, Dafeng Hui, Ning Zhou, Dong Zou, Qin Yu, Xiaofeng Gong Jan 2019

Integrating Wildfires Propagation Prediction Into Early Warning Of Electrical Transmission Line Outages, Songyi Dian, Peng Cheng, Qiang Ye, Jirong Wu, Ruisen Luo, Chen Wang, Dafeng Hui, Ning Zhou, Dong Zou, Qin Yu, Xiaofeng Gong

Biology Faculty Research

Wildfires could pose a significant danger to electrical transmission lines and cause considerable losses to the power grids and residents nearby. Previous studies of preventing wildfire damages to electrical transmission lines mostly analyze wildfire and power system security independently due to their differences in disciplines and cannot satisfy the requirement of the power grid for active and timely responses. In this paper, we have designed an integrated wildfire early warning system framework for power grids, taking prediction of wildfires and early warning of line outage probability together. First, the proposed model simulates the spatiotemporal process of wildfires via a geography …
