Negotiation In Workplace Environments, Lauren Cina Apr 2023

Negotiation In Workplace Environments, Lauren Cina

Communication Senior Capstone Projects

The communication concept of negotiation is prevalent in our world today, and it is especially evident in the workplace. To be successful in navigating relationships within the workplace, employees must possess negotiation skills. Conflict is inevitable, so the ability to see the other party’s perspective and loosen your hold of positions is essential in negotiation. Negotiation should be less about argumentation and “winning” and instead it should be more about mutual gain. Trust and power differences in supervisor/subordinate relationships play a role in negotiations and, formality in these managerial relationships does not always mean more productive problem solving. Researchers discovered …

The Role Of Home Victimization In Preadolescents’ General Perceptions Of Trust, Abigail Seeman

Psychology Student Projects

The study explored the impact of home victimization on preadolescents’ general perceptions of trust. This exploration utilized extant data from the São Paulo Legal Socialization Study, a longitudinal study of 800 preadolescent participants who completed questionnaires assessing parental legitimacy, among other related factors. To assess the impact of home victimization on perceptions of trustworthiness, participants were split into two groups based on whether or not they had experienced assault by an adult in their home. Analysis revealed a statistically and practically significant difference across the groups regarding the belief that people care about others. This result indicated that the perception …

Religion Vs. Politics: Which Wins At A Christian Liberal Arts University?, Amanda Williams Apr 2022

Religion Vs. Politics: Which Wins At A Christian Liberal Arts University?, Amanda Williams

Political Studies Student Projects

Scholars have studied the effects of framing on different groups of people for decades. There has also been research on the relationship between religious beliefs and politics. This article takes the unique population of a Christian college campus to combine the test of faith against politics through subtle framing. When faced with a political frame, will these Christians ultimately side with their political beliefs or their religious beliefs? I found through a questionnaire experiment run in November 2021 on Taylor University students and some faculty that religious beliefs prevailed. This result is somewhat surprising giving the current political climate, but …

Home Victimization And Preadolescents' Parental And Police Trust, Ellie Jarosinski, Brooke Welch Apr 2022

Home Victimization And Preadolescents' Parental And Police Trust, Ellie Jarosinski, Brooke Welch

Celebration of Scholarship 2022

This study explored relationships between preadolescents’ perceived trust in parents and police and between home victimization and trust. It utilized extant data from a longitudinal study conducted in São Paulo, Brazil, in which 800 participants completed questionnaires assessing parental legitimacy. Analysis revealed significant relationships between trust in parents and police, although most correlations were weak. Results indicated a positive relationship between trust in parents and police, while home victimization was negatively related to trust. This negative relationship yields implications for preadolescent health and safety and broadens the literature on trust and impacts of victimization. Future studies could incorporate non-self-report measures, …

The Impact Of Partisan Media On Individual Voting Habits, Michael Miller, Julia Frontz Apr 2022

The Impact Of Partisan Media On Individual Voting Habits, Michael Miller, Julia Frontz

Celebration of Scholarship 2022

Politics and news media are very connected to each other. Many people get mad at news sites for what they report or how they report it, but how much of an effect does news have on politics? We decided to test and see how much the type of news that people watch affects the way that they vote. We looked at which news people watched and how they voted in national elections, and we found that there is little to no evidence to show that there is any impact of news on people’s voting.

Poverty In A North American Context, Nathanael Snow, Benjamin Pettus Nov 2021

Poverty In A North American Context, Nathanael Snow, Benjamin Pettus

White Papers

From the Introduction

Understanding the impact of poverty can be aided by careful measurement. Statisticians and economists, both within the government and in the private sector, collect and analyze such statistics.

Disagreement about the interpretation of those figures can make it difficult for most people to know how they should respond to specific cases of poverty they encounter. For a meaningful discussion to take place, the existing understanding should be presented. This report summarizes the existing research on poverty and provides the interested reader with resources to continue learning about the topic. This report does not offer policy advice or …

The Effect Of The Big Five Personality Traits On The Perceived Restorativeness Of Zondervan Library Spaces, James Brads, Luke Slater, Laura Mcclelland

Faculty-Mentored Undergraduate Scholarship

The current research aims explored which personalities experience differences in restorativeness in the Zondervan Library on the Taylor University campus. Through analysis of 302 surveys from Taylor undergraduates, we found that highly agreeable and open individuals typically see environments as more restorative. Individuals who score highly in Agreeableness and Openness see the library as a more restorative environment than those who score lower in these two domains. Agreeableness was the single best predictor of restorativeness on the first floor of the library, while the second floor of the library had two best predictors: Agreeableness and Openness.

Looking From Yesterday: Taylor University At 175, Ashley Chu, Tesia Jurasheck, Elizabeth Hammond, Alyssa Lykins

Faculty-Mentored Undergraduate Scholarship

“Looking from Yesterday” is the title of Dr. Milo A. Rediger’s 1970 address about the importance of Christian higher education during times of uncertainty and volatility. In this address, Rediger references the “Taylor concept,” which included symbols of oil (light) and the cross as a hopeful sign to the world. Despite its delivery more than 50 years ago, the theme of Rediger’s address still rings true today as we continue to seek to fulfill the mission of Taylor University during our own challenging times. This year (2021-22), Taylor University will recognize its founding 175 years ago. This research project will …

Fmus 2020 Trump Executive Order Research, Grace Christodoss, Kaleb Sena

Celebration of Scholarship 2021

President Donald J. Trump's presidency has been one of high critique as well as high praise for his "unprecedented" approach to governing. Both sides looking more towards his character as the reason for this "uniqueness" rather than to finite means of measurement. We took a statistically in-depth look into President Trump's governing style to determine if it could be factually proven that his unique governing style is truly different from that of past Presidents. We did this specifically through the lens of executive orders. We will search public databases and review historical models to see whether or not Trump's use …

On The Shores Of Greece: Eu Migration Policy In The 2015 Refugee Crisis Through The Lens Of The Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework, Victoria Macdonald

Global Studies Student Projects

This paper breaks down elements of the EU’s response to the 2015 refugee crisis through the case of Greece, specifically in light of the four components in the UN’s Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework. Especially important in the regions of the Mediterranean and Europe since the beginning of the 2015 refugee crisis, this paper defines elements of migration within the European context. Furthermore, it seeks to understand how preference for political and national security over humanitarian aid and action highlight policy failings in light of the UN’s Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework.

Reactive Attachment Disorder In Children, Lindy Ruth Rader Feb 2020

Reactive Attachment Disorder In Children, Lindy Ruth Rader

CARE Conference: Vulnerable Children and Viable Communities

Reactive Attachment Disorder as a whole is a disorder that shows itself in young children. It then has the possibility of affecting the rest of the child’s life and the people that surround the child. There are two types of Reactive Attachment Disorder. The first type is the emotionally withdrawn/inhibited type. This can manifest itself in a few different ways, but the main way is through the child lashing out in fear or anger. This is due to the lack of healthy attachments in their lives. The second subtype is the disinhibited type. This also can manifest itself in multiple …

Cultural Factors That Influence Domestic Adoption In South Africa, Greta N. Buckenberger Feb 2020

Cultural Factors That Influence Domestic Adoption In South Africa, Greta N. Buckenberger

CARE Conference: Vulnerable Children and Viable Communities

South Africa has a long and rich cultural history and this history has impacted domestic adoption in a myriad of ways. These cultural factors include ancestral beliefs, infertility, family structure, and apartheid, and they all affect adoption policies and how the public perceives adoption. Unfortunately, these factors usually result in negative results for children in kinship care or children waiting to be adopted. Kinship care is the informal, non-governmentally regulated practice of relatives caring for children. South Africa’s cultural factors of ancestral beliefs, infertility, family structure, apartheid, and the AIDS crisis all impact domestic adoption.
