The Milwaukee Public Library has many special collections. These special collections exist both within MPL's various archives and as part of several reference departments housed at MPL's Central Library. The Milwaukee Public Library's archives consist of the City of Milwaukee Archives, the Great Lakes Marine Collection, the Historic Photo Archives, the Manuscript Collection, the Milwaukee Road Archives, MPL's Own Archives, and the Wisconsin Architectural Archive. In addition, many of Central Library's subject departments have special collections beyond those contained in these seven archives. The Horace Seaman Wisconsin Infantry collection is made up primarily of photos from Colonel Horace M. Seaman's service with the Wisconsin National Guard. The majority of the photos come from his service with the 4th Wisconsin Infantry in the Spanish-American War of 1898. The photos in the collection include many portraits of individuals that Colonel Seaman served throughout his years with the Wisconsin National Guard and in his service in the Spanish-American War. In the 1960s a box of marriage certificates created between 1822 and 1876 was found at the Milwaukee County Courthouse. The box also included some miscellaneous documents pertaining to the marriage such as permission to marry slips, authorizations, and land deeds. The information in these documents include a parent giving permission for an underage child to marry, an affidavit of there being no impediment to marriage, information on the closeness of the blood relationship, and written permission for the clerk to hand the marriage license to a third party for delivery. While many different endeavors to support name authority control in Extensible Markup Language (XML) metadata have been explored, none have been accepted as a best practice. For this reason, libraries continue to experiment with the schema, tool, or process that best suits their local authority control needs in XML. The Milwaukee Mayors digital collection is an adaptation of a volume of images and information collected by Library staff to form the Biographical Sketches of the Mayors of the City of Milwaukee. Created more than 40 years ago, it has been updated with images of recent mayors. In addition to the images and information from Biographical Sketches, other photos were selected from the Historic Portrait Collection (a part of the Historic Photo Archives) in the Humanities Department. Libraries, museums, archives, and similar institutions worldwide are digitizing their physical collections and creating born‐digital resources, all in an effort to make them accessible to people everywhere. The digitization program at the University of South Florida Tampa Library has been active since the mid 1990s. Today it is expected that, as the Library proceeds with its ARL collections initiatives, the demands on this program will increase dramatically.

The Milwaukee Historic Photos digital collection represents the start of the process of making historic photos of Milwaukee available to the public online. The photos from this collection are pulled from the Milwaukee Public Library's historic photograph collection. The entire collection includes over 20,000 photographs of Milwaukee dating from the late 19th century to present day. The current digital collection is only a small fraction of the total available photos, but is growing all the time, so stop back to see what new images become available.
