Retirement On The Line: Age, Work, And Value In An American Factory, Caitrin Lynch
Caitrin Lynch
In an era when people live longer and want (or need) to work past the traditional retirement age, the Vita Needle Company of Needham, Massachusetts, provides inspiration and important lessons about the value of older workers. Vita Needle is a family-owned factory that was founded in 1932 and makes needles, stainless steel tubing and pipes, and custom fabricated parts. As part of its unusual business model, the company seeks out older workers; the median age of the employees is seventy-four.

Black Men In College: Implications For Hbcus And Beyond, Robert T. Palmer, Phd, J. Luke Wood, Phd
Robert T. Palmer, PhD
Black Men in College provides vital information about how to effectively support, retain, and graduate Black male undergraduates. This edited collection centers on the notion that Black male collegians are not a homogenous group; rather, they are representative of rarely acknowledged differences that exist among them. This valuable text suggests that understanding these differences is critical to making true in-roads in serving Black men. Chapter contributors describe the diverse challenges Black men in HBCUs face and discuss how to support and retain high-achieving men, gay men, academically unprepared men, low-income men, men in STEM, American immigrants, millennials, collegiate fathers, those …
Preserving Our Heritage: Protecting Law Library Core Missions Through Updated Library Quality Assessment Standards, Sarah Hooke Lee
Preserving Our Heritage: Protecting Law Library Core Missions Through Updated Library Quality Assessment Standards, Sarah Hooke Lee
Sarah Hooke Lee
Professor Lee argues that traditional quality criteria for judging law libraries are now inadequate because they no longer capture the vital multiple missions of today's libraries. She suggests ways that law librarians can begin to develop indicia of quality that can adequately evaluate the contemporary law school library and preserve its core missions.
The Art Of Emptiness: Buddhist Nature In Picture Books Of Miyazawa Kenji's Donguri To Yamaneko (Wildcat And The Acorns), Helen Kilpatrick
The Art Of Emptiness: Buddhist Nature In Picture Books Of Miyazawa Kenji's Donguri To Yamaneko (Wildcat And The Acorns), Helen Kilpatrick
Helen Kilpatrick
Miyazawa Kenji (1896-1933), the author of Donguri to Yamaneko [3], is recognised as one of "the most imaginative spinner[s] of children's stories, of twentieth-century Japan" (Satô xvii). Moreover, Kenji, as he is commonly known, is probably Japan's most renowned Buddhist writer and his work is now taught in schools and universities. [4]He was writing at a time when Japan was undergoing rapid modernisation and much of his work, including Donguri, was created as a protest against the spiritual desolation associated with rampant industrialisation, commodification and consumerism. Donguri should be considered in this context as the story ultimately foregrounds a communion …
Italian Sixteenth-Century Writing Books And The Scribal Reality Of Verona, Richard Clement
Italian Sixteenth-Century Writing Books And The Scribal Reality Of Verona, Richard Clement
Richard W. Clement
The sixteenth-century copybooks of the Italian writing masters have long been considered to be reflections of the contemporary scribal condition. The impression one gains from reading the works of Arrighi, Taglienti, Palatino, and Cresci, among others, is that cancellaresca was the dominant notarial script of the first half of the century, that cancellaresca formata, developed by Palatino at mid-century, supplanted it, and that Cresci's cancellaresca corsiva reigned supreme at the end. In fact, if we consider the manuscript evidence, specifically the Rosenthal Collection of North Italian Documents at the University of Chicago, we find a very different reality. In sixteenth-century …

Reminiscences Of Illawarra By Alexander Stewart, Michael K. Organ
Michael Organ
The following "Reminiscences of Illawarra" initially appeared in the Illawarra Mercury between 17 April and 18 August 1894 in 24 parts, each part usually dealing with a separate aspect of the very early history of Illawarra, and more specifically with the early development of the township of Wollongong. This book is one of a continuing series to be published as aids to the study of local history in Illawarra. Some thirty works are at present in preparation or in contemplation. The series' objective is to provide low-cost authentic source material for students as well as general readers. Pioneers Of The Illawarra - A History Of The Family Of Elias Organ In Wollongong, 1839-1869, Michael K. Organ, Robert Hardy
Michael Organ
This history deals with the life and times of members of the Organ family who settled in the Illawarra region in 1839. The account is based on official government records and newspaper accounts. Unlike other such histories no core of personal memorabilia including letters, documents or artifacts survives, upon which a more personal account can be constructed. Some personal reminiscences dictated by members of the family in the 1920s and '30s have been used, however they are sketchy and were only used to indicate a line of research. This detailed study focuses on the circumstances of the Organ family during …

Conrad Martens : Journal Of A Voyage From England To Australia Aboard Hms Beagle And Hms Hyacinth 1833-35, Michael K. Organ
Michael Organ
Conrad Martens (1801-78) is widely regarded as Australia's foremost watercolourist of the colonial period, having produced a large body of work whilst resident in New South Wales between 1835-78. His journal of a voyage from England to Australia during 1833-35 aboard HMS Beagle with Charles Darwin and HMS Hyacinth was for a long period catalogued as an `Anonymous Journal of a Voyage on board H.M.S. Hyacinth' in the collection of the Mitchell Library, Sydney (ML A429). However in 1993 it was identified as by Conrad Martens. This was a significant find as it also contained an account of Martens' time …

Contemporary Irish Film: New Perspectives On A National Cinema, Seán Crosson Dr., Werner Huber
Seán Crosson
The unprecedented economic growth and immigration that Ireland experienced between 1995 and 2007 did not only challenge national but also ethnic, social, and gender identities. The contributions to this volume explore how films tackle these challenges and help to make sense of Ireland’s altered position in a globalised world. Among the films discussed are some of the most critically acclaimed Irish films of recent years, including Once (2006), Adam & Paul (2004), Garage (2007), and The Secret of Kells (2009), as well as the work of Oscar-winning director and writer Neil Jordan. The volume is completed by an extensive interview …

Best Practices Of Journalism In Asia, Eric Loo
Best Practices Of Journalism In Asia, Eric Loo
Eric Loo
While journalism adheres to an assumed universal ethical code and methodology, its goals and functions are essentially framed by local factors, and to an extent, existential imperatives. Discussions on what constitutes ‘best practices’ of journalism in the Asian context are ideologically polarized. For instance, governments in newly industrialized countries, such as Malaysia, and socialist bloc such as in Indochina and Myanmar, see the media more as a state apparatus and a prime mover of national development. Which conflicts with civil societies’ conception of professional journalism as a public trust, a representative of the ‘fourth estate’ – the common people – …

Illawarra And South Coast Aborigines 1770-1900, Michael K. Organ
Illawarra And South Coast Aborigines 1770-1900, Michael K. Organ
Michael Organ
The following compilation of historical manuscript and published material relating to the Illawarra and South Coast Aborigines for the approximate period 1770 to 1900 aims to supplement that contained in the author's Illawarra and South Coast Aborigines 1770- 1850 (Wollongong University, 1990). The latter was compiled in a relatively short 18 month period between 1988 and 1989, and since then a great deal of new material has been discovered, with more undoubtedly yet to be unearthed of relevance to this study. As a result the present document contains material of a similar nature to that in the 1990 work, with …
The Frontier In Books, Richard Clement
The Frontier In Books, Richard Clement
Richard W. Clement
Unique among contemporary Western nations, the American national identity was created from present and living memory, unlike the English modern national identity, which was created out of distant memories from an era many centuries past. The English visions, which hearkened back to Anglo-Saxon England and the mythical Arthurian realms, were mediated by a small group of scholars who alone could understand the ancient languages. The books those scholars wrote were then read by a narrow circle of educated people who reinterpreted the ancient histories and myths for the general public, and in time the sense of what medieval England had …

Each century's section begins with a critical introduction, which establishes the social and political environment in which the media …
The Quiet Man ... And Beyond: Reflections On A Classic Film, John Ford And Ireland, Seán Crosson Dr., Rod Stoneman
The Quiet Man ... And Beyond: Reflections On A Classic Film, John Ford And Ireland, Seán Crosson Dr., Rod Stoneman
Seán Crosson
In 1996, The Quiet Man topped an Irish Times poll for the best Irish film of all time. Almost ten years later, with many more Irish (and Irish-themed) films made, The Quiet Man still occupied number four in a poll of 10,000 people across Ireland. John Ford's greatest commercial success, the film also set a template for Ireland's representation, and promotion, for over half a century. This book, The Quiet Man ... and Beyond, involves both critical analysis of aspects of The Quiet Man as myth, commodity and fetish and the celebration of a film that has sustained considerable academic …
