Participants will explore Encyclomedia and Thinkfinity for lesson plan ideas, media-rich resources, and standards-based content as well as other online resources that may assist educators with creative planning for their classrooms. Participants will be encouraged to share their favorite websites. Presenters will also demonstrate the use of iMovie to customize short video clips for classroom use. Attendees are highly encouraged to bring a flash drive.

Students in the Boise State University course, “History of Women in Idaho,” helped develop Idaho Women’s History Day with research papers and poster exhibits at the Idaho State Capitol. These papers represent three perspectives on that project and highlight research on three individual women in Idaho history: Espe Alegria, May Arkwright Hutton, and Agnes Just Reid.

Give ‘Em What They Want: Patron-Driven Collection Development, Karen S. Fischer, Michael Wright

It’s unorthodox: a small number of libraries nationwide are opening up their acquisitions process for e-books and letting their users make the picks. Known as patron-driven acquisition (PDA), the process involves working with a vendor to develop an e-book subject profile, and then loading MARC records for e-books matching the profile into the library’s catalog. After a certain number of uses, the library owns the e-book and the vendor deducts payment from a deposit account. There is no intervention by subject-specialist librarians or even acquisitions staff.

The Reference Department at Loyola Marymount University’s (LMU) William H. Hannon Library experimented with using the Gimlet question tracking system to record statistics on all encounters at their new “almost 24/7” Information Desk. This workshop will chronicle the implementation of Gimlet at the Information Desk and highlight the data analysis techniques that led to several advancements in staffing and service.

This presentation will showcase Basque immigrant Espe Alegria (1906-1991), who spent her life preserving and promoting Basque language, culture, and identity in Boise, Idaho. Espe Alegria’s continuous work left a legacy on the American Diaspora in three areas: her work in radio broadcasting, translation and immigration services, and the arts. Espe hosted The Basque Program, a one-hour radio program that aired every week from 1955-1981. Known as the “Voice of the Basques,” Espe used her social connections to personalize the program in ways that connected with listeners in both cities and Basque-speaking sheepherders. Archivists grapple with hard decisions about reproducing images every day. Aside from the copyright gray zone that so many photographs fall under, there are also issues of professional courtesy, digitization, cultural sensitivity, political pressures, and commercial use. In this panel four archivists discuss some of the more difficult reproduction questions, and resultant solutions, they have encountered. These questions will resonate to similar situations that other archivists have encountered and provide some measure of clarity for dealing with difficult reproduction questions. The panel will also be open to questions and situations presented by the audience.

Loyola Marymount University's (LMU) Reference Department designed a rubric to measure student learning outcomes for freshman English. Students sequentially completed an "English 110 Library Research Worksheet” during library instruction. The rubric which is set up to analyze learning outcomes from parts of the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education is applied to collected student worksheets. The Department undertook a multi-step process to try to calibrate the rubric and achieve consensus estimates of inter-rater reliability. During fall 2009, reference & instruction librarians collected 755 worksheets and graded a random sample of 100 students. This poster session will present the …
