Kim McPhee

Graduate student enrollment is increasing and academic librarians must support this diverse group. How do grad students approach research? What are their stumbling blocks? What do they need from us in order to succeed? We spoke to graduate students in the social sciences and have uncovered the answers to these questions. The results of our research have both informed and streamlined our instruction practice. Find out what our grad students wish all academic librarians knew about them!

It Plays Therefore It Is: The Cartesian Problem For Film Preservationists, Greg Wilsbacher

Greg Wilsbacher

Film archivists are facing a new challenge as we move from digitizing analog video tape to digitizing motion picture film. Specifically, we must ask ourselves whether we want to preserve the moving image as an essence or motion picture film as a material artifact.

'Some Quite Nice Little Tunes': An Overview Of The Preparation And Recording Of The Incipits For The Britten Thematic Catalogue, Jonathan Manton Nov 2010

'Some Quite Nice Little Tunes': An Overview Of The Preparation And Recording Of The Incipits For The Britten Thematic Catalogue, Jonathan Manton

Jonathan Manton

Due for completion in 2013, the Britten thematic catalogue, an online musicological research tool that will present detailed individual records charting Britten's entire compositional output (approximately 1,200 works both published and unpublished including all juvenilia), is currently being compiled at the Britten-Pears Foundation in the United Kingdom. As this resource will be published exclusively online, it is the project's intention to fully employ the benefits afforded to the catalog through its virtual format, specifically when presenting thematic incipits for each work. In addition to typeset incipits, which in the case of the Britten thematic catalogue will extend beyond the traditional 'opening fragment of music,' …

Albertsons Library: A Library For The 21st Century, Peggy S. Cooper, Amy M. Elliott

Peggy S. Cooper

After five years of flat budgets, give backs, hold backs, and cut backs, the faculty, students and university administration love Albertsons Library more than ever before. Why? Because we’ve instituted a paradigm shift from building a collection of materials to building a collection of services. On-demand ordering of all faculty requests; ordering of ILL requests, immediate response to LIBQUAL survey results, focus groups, and user suggestions; creation of individual faculty library pages; and active and attentive library liaisons are a few of the services we have implemented to win the love of our users. Participants in this session will see …

What Would You Call It? Developing A Specialized Taxonomy To Serve Multiple Audiences, Heather Martin, Megan Sarkisian Nov 2010

What Would You Call It? Developing A Specialized Taxonomy To Serve Multiple Audiences, Heather Martin, Megan Sarkisian

Heather J Martin, MISt, AHIP

The National Service-Learning Clearinghouse had a web and library taxonomy that was based loosely on the ERIC Thesaurus, developed organically, and somewhat haphazardly, over time.  We recognized multiple short-comings in both the taxonomy itself and the often inconsistent way in which it was applied to the collection as well as our website. After a needs assessment we decided to develop a new taxonomy as part of a larger content management project in order to provide greater ease of use and access to both internal and external users.

“Dual Linkage:” Iowa’S Use Of The Itm Link, Wendy C. Robertson Nov 2010

“Dual Linkage:” Iowa’S Use Of The Itm Link, Wendy C. Robertson

Wendy C Robertson

The University of Iowa Libraries make extensive use of ALEPH’s ITM link, allowing one item to be linked to multiple titles, giving us the ability to show circulation information for analytics and “bound withs.” In the process of adding thousands of links, we have found some weaknesses and have devised solutions to deal with difficult situations.

Repository-Based Publishing By Libraries, Wendy C. Robertson Nov 2010

Repository-Based Publishing By Libraries, Wendy C. Robertson

Wendy C Robertson

The University of Iowa Libraries has a small e-publishing program as part of our repository and other digital collections. We host a variety of faculty produced scholarship, including videos and image collections, as well as more traditional textual materials. Our working paper and journal collections include a variety of titles, from strongly institutionally affiliated titles to society titles. Setting up this program has been a learning process for us, particularly since we had not previously been a journal publisher. We view e-publishing as part of our commitment to open access scholarship and see this as a way in which we …

Preliminary Executive Summary: Aserl Interlibrary Loan Needs Assessment And Best Practices Survey, David P. Atkins, John Burger, William Gee, Judy Greenwood, Pam King, Kristine Shrauger, Shirley Thomas

David P Atkins

A working group of ASERL librarians designed a survey to assess resource sharing issues and identify best practices. The results will assist ASERL in identifying programming and project areas to support resource sharing. The survey will also produce ILL and resource sharing benchmarks useful for future planning and assessment. The survey inquires into fundamental resource sharing outputs, networks, and technologies. To measure current best practices, the survey also incorporates Rethinking Resource Sharing "STARS" A Checklist Interlibrary Loan Assessment, devised by ALA/RUSA/STARS.
